As far as DRose, I suspect there was some LeBron fatigue in voters.

As far as Gasol, he didn’t even make either of the two All Defense teams, I believe.

Since when does a DPOY not even make All Defense?

Was there a fatigue factor with one of the other DPOY candidates, so they followed the Apple commercial’s command to "Think Different"?

The expectations were incredibly high and their was definite drawback from his move to Miami. He was still the best player in the league, but Derrick Rose was a huge part of a Bulls team that finished with 62 wins. That was 4 more wins than the "Super Team" that Miami was labelled and the Bulls did win all 3 regular season games against the Heat (with the MVP being a regular season award and all). Some felt Dwight Howard was also a big time candidate (he was John Hollinger’s favorite), as he had the best statistical season of his career coming off of a Finals appearance the year previous, bringing an undermanned Orlando team to a respectable 52 wins. LeBron and Howard both had cases, it just seems Rose had the wins on his side and was incredibly valuable to a team that struggled without his offense.

With Gasol, I do not know what the huge beef is. Seems like you just did not really do the research, because Marc Gasol was 2nd Team All-Defense when he won the DPOY. The exact same thing happened the year before with Tyson Chandler when he won it with New York. Also happened to Dikembe Mutombo the first time he won the DPOY. All-Defensive team voting can be incredibly confusing on the norm, with players either getting shocking too much or too little credit (or in the case of Draymond Green, have certain DPOY voters forget he was playing this season).

Gasol was the anchor of a defense that allowed under 90 ppg. For the All-Defensive 1st Team that season, Joakim Noah and Tyson Chandler poached votes, with neither of them being what they were the season before. LeBron James finished runner-up for DPOY that season, as he was amongst as versatile as ever on the defensive end. Serge Ibaka was 3rd and Noah was 4th, with Tyson Chandler finishing in 13th. Just because voters gave Tyson a "make-up 1st Team" for the year before did not necessarily mean that Gasol did not deserve the award. You seem to love doing research when it comes to the Celtics, do not exactly know what stopped you from doing that here.

Thanks for saving me two hours. I couldn’t have asked for a more detailed and convincing response.

Sometimes random questions like that elicit a lot of interesting debate, often off-topic.

But I need to get in a On-Season mentality here. Historical discussion is good for off-season, not preseason.

That essentially eliminated his chances at an MVP that year. It took the natural "prior-MVP fatigue" to a whole new level. Statistically Lebron was the no-brainer MVP. The #2 player that year was Durant. However, Durant’s stats looked similar to LBJ’s stats side by side, but they were inferior. Thus, the excuse to avoid LBJ via Durant was impossible. Dwight had a great year, but not an MVP caliber year. Then there was DRose. Extremely likeable, blew expectations out of the water, and led his team to a 62 win season. Was he as good as LBJ statistically? Of course not. But he did enough to give the anti-LBJ media an excuse to vote for someone else.

As for Gasol, I didn’t really follow your beef on this one. He was the anchor on an elite defense and I think it was a well deserved win.

Guys like Marcus Smart and Avery Bradley and Crowder made Kelly Olynyk look like an average defender, so I just wouldn’t be surprised if Tony Allen and Mike Conley’s impact was underrated. "Anchor" was/is a big buzzword, but the fact is that Elite backcourt defenders have many, many more opportunities to impact a game than a "rim protector" or "anchor" does. Who has the ball most of the time? Guards/Wings. Who are the biggest scorers in the NBA? Guards/SFs. Who do the rules favor? Offensive guards.

There’s been a big trend of dismissing the significance of guard defense, in part because most of the Glamour Guards like Harden and Irving and Lillard play terrible defense.

Tony Allen was probably the real anchor of that team. The guy who defends the best player 1-3, who actually got so inside Kevin Durant’s head that Durant admitted it.

Look at the Heatles. Chalmers/Wade/LeBron was the key to that whole run. Those guys forced endless turnovers for epic fast break points, over and over and over.

Anyway, maybe he earned it, maybe he didn’t. I need to do more research.

Guard D is seriously underrated in today’s NBA. And I agree, without Conley/Allen, I don’t think Gasol gets the nod. Without a doubt, more guards/wings should be getting DPOY votes/awards.

Smart could do it this year if he was more recognizable. Give him another year though.

John Wall could too, especially if a big sneaker company wants to brand him as Mr. Lunch Bucket Blue Collar type image.

I think he’s one of 3-4 deserving candidates.
More importantly, I think it’s crazy how he can make DPOY and All-Defensive Second Team.

And he shouldn’t have even made the All-Defensive Second Team. Larry Sanders had more votes (points), but he was classified as a forward for some reason (presumably so Marc Gasol wouldn’t be left off).
You have to remember, the coaches vote for the All-Defensive Team, while media members vote for the Defensive Player of the Year.

Guarantee you I’m not the only one who does this… And besides I don’t see why anyone would care. I mean I don’t have an exact 1 to 1 post to point ratio so it means i’ve got other people’s +1’s. I do it so that I can pad a little. I have points I say reasonable things on here. You don’t Myles Turner… Next Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russel… bust, Porzingis will be the next greatest big… Those are just the beginning of all the crap you’re polluting this site with. I mean, you have people telling others to just not read your posts. At least people read mine. You are ridiculous… Will the regular season just start so I don’t have to have T Rex stalking me…

As much as TREX annoys me, I didn’t think this was a horrible post. That said, Derrick Rose deserved MVP. He led a conference-best team… literally had the ball in his hand almost every posession and helped create a decetn offense without the help of the coaching staff really.

I also think Gasol was deserving of his DPOY award, but it seemed like players didn’t agree with the choice. Besides emotional analysts like Jalen Rose, it did seem like the selection was knocked by a few active players. But you have the credit the anchor of any elite team. Whether it’s Curry with  the Warriors or Gasol leading a stifling defense, it was the correct pick.

I think LeBron probably should have won DRose’s AND Durant’s MVP. LeBron was a good sport about Durant winning it, and was more focused on winning his 7 championships with Miami to get too upset about it.

And I didn’t think that at the time of each MVP. I probably had my own LeBron fatigue.

Lebron was probably more valuable than Rose that year, but Rose had a really good case given his team’s record and the workload he carried, especially offensively.

Marc absolutely deserved to win, though there’s 5 or 6 good candidates yearly with little to seperate them, so you can make a case lots of ways.

If you are going strictly based on statistics, than lebron deserved to win mvp in 2011. If you are going based on the player that had the biggest impact ( most valuable) to his team in the regular season that year, its hard to argue with rose. I personally have always felt rose was deserving of that mvp award, even if the negative publicity of the decision and voter fatigue played into it.

As for gasol winning dpoy in 2013, I’m really not sure. There wasn’t really a slam dunk candidate that season. I’ve never felt gasol was that great of an individual defender but he is extremely valuable to Memphis’s overall team defense. Guys like hibbert, Noah, lebron, Chandler, even igoudala probably all had cases that year but I don’t think anyone really stood out above the rest. Somebody has to win and it ended up being gasol.

Remember how bad the reputation of Randolph was before he was paired with Marc. Marc covers for a lot of holes, though Tony and Conley clearly help.
