Dez Wells granted waiver by NCAA, can play immediately at Maryland
Really liked him last year at Xavier, think what happened their was a damn shame. Kentucky vs. Maryland happening on Friday, seems like a must watch for college hoops fans. Dez being in uniform should give the Terps that much more of a chance. Early upset? Not sure, but would not completely count it out. The Terps still need an identity, but they may have found their go-to guy in Dez Wells. Here is a mix tape of his from HS:
Awesome news. Maryland could actually run a lineup with NBA type size/athleticism if they want to with: Pe'Shon, Faust, Dez, Shaq Cleare and Len. You can even throw underrated frosh wing Jake Layman in the mix, and they're even bigger. I'll be looking forward to watching them this year. Last year they were a bit of an eyesore to watch with Stoglin and Faust chucking and playing streetball out there. They just played ugly all-around basketball. Hopefully Turgeon gets some of that crap out this year.
While I agree w/ you Siggy on the offense being ugly a lot of times due to Stoglin and Faust, Stoglin was often the one that kept MD in games last yr. He was the only player on the roster that could just "go off" at any time. Many MD ans think getting rid of Stoglin will be addidtion by subtraction, but I think we would've been better off with him this yr.
Last year was pretty much a lost cause from the start for Maryland. They were young, inexperienced and lacked talent. Then there was the suspension that Len had to serve along with the injury to Pe'Shon (who IMO is the leader of that team) to start the season. For all intents and purposes, it was a transition year with very little upside outside of the development of their freshmen, which i didn't see much of at all.
Stoglin took advantage of all the shots available and he got his. I just think he's the type of player who can stunt the development of certain players and the team as a whole with his shot jacking and overall selfish play.
I'm also contemplating re-adding Dez into my mock draft in the late first round. He's a slightly undersized SF right now, but he's super athletic, strong and he showed some progress last yr in his shooting.
I say Maryland is 4 in the ACC right now just ahead of FSU. Len and Wells is a serious combination.
Yeah buddy. The Terps have better than a good chance of winning this game. Cleare has shown he is not ready to start so Padgett will be at the Pf. As a matter of fact the other freshman 6'7 Pf Mitchell has looked better in practice and the scrimmage they have played so he is probably higher on the depth chart
Wells gives definition to the phrase "built like a tank".
cant wait to the season opener.
i just found a comparison for deonte burton.... hybrid of Dez Wells & Marcus Smart.
here are some Sick new highlights of him... and if these in fact are new highlights i can tell he's been working on getting more elevation in his jumper. and loosing weight, theres no way he's 230 anymore....
video starts at 3.22m
I am a current student at Maryland, and I can say that the campus is real optimistic on what Dez Wells will bring. Along the side of Nick Faust and Alex Len UMD basketball looks to make leaps in the ACC.
Yes the is a chance, can't agree too much about not looking to good in their games since they won both by 40 plus while Maryland won by 12 if I'm not mistaken. It's is the best time to beat UK though because later in the season those freshmen are going to be used to college basketball like all of Cals past freshmen

Dez Wells granted waiver by NCAA, can play immediately at Maryland

Xavier transfer Dez Wells has been granted an eligibility waiver and can play right away at Maryland, the school announced Wednesday.
Wells, who averaged 9.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game for Xavier last season, was expelled from the school for violating the student code of conduct. The highly contentious decision was later called “fundamentally unfair” and “deeply flawed” by an Ohio prosecutor.
The highly publicized recruitment that followed his expulsion ultimately landed him at Maryland with head coach Mark Turgeon, who from the start pushed a request for a waiver that would allow Wells to play right away.
The granting of that waiver Wednesday by the NCAA sets a new precedent in the parameters that allow one to play immediately at a new institution, the merits of which will likely be debated in the days to come.
Wells now likely becomes a starter for a Maryland team that was picked to finish sixth in the ACC in this year’s conference coaches’ poll. The team loses leading scorer Terrell Stoglin from last season, but brings in a strong recruiting class that includes big man Shaquille Cleare and forward Jake Layman.
The Terrapins open their season Friday against Kentucky at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., a game for which Wells will be eligible.

Awesome news for Terps fans! Seemed like it was not going to happen, but this makes the Terps even more dangerous coming out of the ACC. See them firmly in the dance with Wells in the fold.
