Is there any chance Dexter Strickland starts at the point for UNC next year? I love his quickness, athleticism and finishing ability, but the guy cannot shoot. It kills me to see starting 2 guards with no jumper. If Dexter starts at the 1, Leslie Mcdonald, a shooter, could start at the 2. He was killing it in the NC Pro-Am over the summer before he tore his ACL.
Strickland I think will start at the 1 at least at the beginning of the year. He is a freak athlete whose shot at making the NBA is playing the PG spot. He has got to fix his jumper though it is one of the most awkward shots I have seen and he needs to work on his passing ability. I however don't think he is an NBA player. Marcus Paige may take over later in the year. Leslie McDonald on the other hand is someone to look out for who I think is primed to explode next year. He has shades of Brandon Roy and Rip Hamilton to his game. I think UNC will likely start:
JP Tokoto is someone to look out for as well. He might not get much burn due to being on a team with McDonald, Hairston, Bullock and Strickland getting looks at the 2/3 spots but if he puts it all together he is going to be some matchup nightmare with his athleticism.
Hairston, Bullock and McDonald will all fight for the starting spot, I think the two who perform best will get the starting role, it's a toss-up for me
Carolina is very thin up front, I think McAdoo will have to play some centre, maybe go with a Strickland-McDonald-Bullock-Hairson-McAdoo line-up at some stages
Anton it just depends on how ready Joel James and Brice Johnson are. Desmond Hubert is a Byron Saunders type talent who plays with a lot of energy and for stretches can be good, but his hands don't let him take the next step to being elite. Next season will be an interesting one for UNC. One of Johnson or James will start at the 5 but if they aren't that ready I think you are right we will be seeing a lot of 4 guard lineups sometimes.
Paige gets the nod to start from day one imo. This year is unlike Marshall havin to sit behind Drew the start of his freshman year, because there isnt a returning starter at pg, Strickland may not be 100% at the start and he isnt a true pg, and tranfser Luke Davis isnt as talented as Paige.
What i think might happen is Hairston or McDonald (more likely Hariston) is going to replace Strickland at the sg spot to give UNC more scoring in the starting lineup. With Strickland serving as the primarliy backup pg and the secondary backup sg spot behind McDonald.
And as for UNC playing small ball with Bullock or Hariston at the pf i dont see i happening because Roy Williams didnt even play Barnes at the pf until very late in the season and it was only spot minutes. And they had 3 bigs last year this year they will have 4. Plus Hubert has tremendous upside as a Shot Blocker.
Start of Season Paige, Strickland, Bullock, McAdoo, Hubert/James/Johnson(only if he gets bigger)
End of Season Paige, Hariston, Bullock, McAdoo, Hubert(Because of his defensive presence he can present, but i think James is going to end up starting because of his size and potentail offensively and defensively)
Past years UNC is almost certainly Post dominate this year not so much its goin to be interesting how UNC adjusts to most of their scoring coming from perimeter guys.(If Barnes had stayed we could really see what he was like as the 1st option in Williams system)
I think hairston will start at 2 next year. Before he injured his wrist he was shooting very well and I think having Hairston, Bullock and McDonald rotating in the 2/3 spots will give UNC good outside shooting. Hopefully either Paige or Strickland steps up and take over and leads this team because Roy's system always needs a good PG to work. Mcadoo will be the lead inside prescense and will most likely be the focal point of UNC's offence. UNC is gonna need guys to step up and maybe they can suprise and have a overachieving year like Kansas did this year :)
The idea of Small ball really has me thinking a lot. Remember the 2005-06 team? Their starting lineup was:
PG Bobby Frasor 6'2
SG Wes Miller 5'11
SF Reyshawn Terry 6'7
PF David Noel 6'6
C Tyler Hansbrough 6'8
That team overachieved because Roy put the best 5 on the floor, that worked out a lot. I am starting to warm up to the idea of a
PG Strickland 6'3
SG McDonald 6'5
SF Bullock 6'7
PF Hairston 6'6
C McAdoo 6'8
With the freshman class coming off the bench. I think Tokoto might surprise some people next year.
Paige is too good not to start. Personally I like Paige, Strickland, Bullock, McAdoo and Johnson/James with Hairston and McDonald being the top backups.
yes, there is definitely a chance he will start at PG, but likely not. Paige should be the guy that starts and Strickland beside him at SG. Thats just Roy's style. IF he really worked on developing Dex, then it would be logical to start Dex and McDonald in the backcourt and Bullock will play mostly at SF with PJ backing up at SG and SF. Hairston would be the firepower off the bench along with Paige. Then they would have good depth with Tokoto.
Hairston should come off the bench because he and McDonald would provide most of the bench scoring anyway. The Blue Team has to have some scorers and McDonald and Hairston are the best scorers outside of Bullock. I actually predict that McAdoo, Bullock, and Hairston will lead the team in scoring.
thats the scenario.
what SHOULD be happening though it Dex should be starting at the PG because that is what he will play in the NBA.
PJ or McDonald have to start becuase they are really the only two who can create their own shot. And McAdoo is going to need a scorer in the starting lineup with him perferably some one who came space the floor. As for Paige i think its going to be like 07' when Lawson took the pg spot from Frasor because he's better and a better fit with the team at that spot. So look for Paige to start eaarly on. Also we dont know how healthy Dex is going to be.
I think Hairston maybe the second leading scorer and return to his pre-injury form from early in the year. Conditioning is going to play a big part and how well he plays because he looked a little sluggish at times, If he dedicated to it this offseason look for big things from him.
The way Bullock continues to improve and play confident is going to be an ex factor on how well this team is. He's built himself into a nice all around player on both sides of the ball, once he becomes more aggressive offensivley and drives the ball more is when he takes his game to the next level. He also needs to get healthy it looks at times he knee may have limited him (He re-injured in the game before Kansas) and at other times he didnt look to have confidence in it. It weird that a 6'7 guy takes layups on easy fastbrakes and dunking opportunities instead of jamming the ball down. I literally think i can count the times he dunked this year with my fingers.
Leslie McDonald on the other hand is someone to look out for who I think is primed to explode next year. He has shades of Brandon Roy and Rip Hamilton to his game. I think UNC will likely start:
^^^^Wow I hadn't seen that side of his game yet....hes just a good set shooter and a very good defender...thats about it.
Dex is not a good Pg...the only good thing with him running PG id that he wont make mistakes. hes more of a SG in a PG body.
SF Reg Bullock
C Joel James only because of his size.
6 Leslie and PJ
I could see Roy giving Dex a crack at PG...and will be Larry drew situation all over again with Dex and Paige.
I just seen that he compared his game to Brandon Roy and Rip lol. During the NC PRO-AM McDonald did show an improved handle and the ability to create of the dribble some, and a mid-range game. So he had improved hopefully he can build off that.
The key for this year team is going to be their willingness to defend all the time on a consistant basis. Unlike in the past couple year when they defend when they feel like it.
Wow, now this is a good topic! heavy rotation from 1-3
I think Strickland can play the point, but only not like a true PG, but he pushes the ball, plays good Dfence and He can get his own shot (better shooter inside the arc tha most think but his 3 needs help). Truth is that Im not sure how confident he is after recoving from a torn acl
SURE STARTERS ARE MCADOO AND BULLOCK!
I think right now that the 1,2 and 5or4, positions are open for the taking....
early on I see the starters as being PG Paige, SG Strickland, SF Bullock, PF McAdoo and J.James as the C b/c I can invision a true functioning UNC offence
based on their size and talents, but the next 5 off the bench will be just as good as the starting 5 in a # of ways ....PG McDonald, SF JP Tokoto, SG Hairston, PF Hubert, PF Brice Johnson
Yes he should start. He should be doing point guard drills all summer. Run the team in pickup games and attend CP3, Deron Williams etc pg camp. He has a similar athletic package to russell westbrook. He only needs to be solid to get in the league. He can defend John Wall/ Derrick Rose type quickness (as best as you can cause it is impossible to stop). It is all up to strick now.
"PJ or McDonald have to start becuase they are really the only two who can create their own shot. "
maybe by your logic and my logic....but Roy's logic doesnt work like that.
One of them has to come off the bench or the Blue team will have no scoring. Likely both will come off the bench because Dex really isnt a PG and UNC always has problems with getting behind early. They need to start the steadiest guy at PG and that should be Paige...and he loves Dex because of the defense he brings to the White team.
I am not disagreeing with you about PJ or Leslie but thats just not how Roy works. In this instance, I dont have a problem if Roy doesnt start either of them because with Bullock and McAdoo the White team will have enough scoring because Paige is more offensive minded than Marshall (up until the tourney this year).
You will need all the firepower you can get off the bench however because PJ and Leslie are the only guys that will be ready and able to score on a consistent basis.
I am with you bruh...see, you know how Roy's mind works! Plus Dex just hasnt shown any PG qualities up til this point. The only thing I may change with your lineup is Hubert being inserted due to his experience (albeit limited)
McDonald similar to Brandon Roy? Not in the slightest....lol. Leslie doesnt have many facets to his game, he is basically an athletic jumpshooter who can defend. If you compare him to anyone in the league....he's like a Jody Meeks.
