First of all, I want to say that this is a 6 paragraph long rant on DeTrashe Carroll, and if you don’t have any interest on reading about him, ignore this. Trust me, I understand completely. Now let’s get to the rant.

Man is this guy horrible or what? I just watched the Raptors vs Bulls game and for a guy that is advertised as the quintissential "3 and D" guy, he does horribly on both sides.

First of all, his defense is atrocious man. I don’t know why Casey still believes this guy is a good defender. This guy gave ZERO effort on defense on crunch time. He was assigned to Butler and basically gave him free lanes to the hoop every single time. He was not on a defensive stance and his feet were on cinder blocks, relying on the help D all to often.

And then committed 2 idiotic fouls on 3 point shooters, and left Mcdermott wide open on a cut on crunch time. For a "great" defender, he sure does not have the best defensive IQ. And it’s not just this game, I watch a lot of Raptor games and he just isn’t that good on D.

And with this, I still didn’t mention his offense, where he couldn’t create a shot to save his life. Not that he needs to, but when Lowry or Derozan get doubled, you just couldn’t trust this guy to score for your team.

This guy duped the Raptors after having a fluke series with the Hawks against the Nets. I was one detractor of this signing, as the whole regular season of that year, he wasn’t really that impressive. He just put on a string of 16+ point games vs a lowly Nets team and his stock suddenley rose.

I feel sorry for Raptor fans including myself for locking this guy up for 64 million for 4 years. I wouldn’t mind it though as long as we give his minutes to the REAL "3 and D" guy, Normal Powell. This guy plays with hustle that Carroll just does not play with (even if he was advertised to bring that specific thing). Also Powel, can actually defend and create shots.

I always thought Carroll is just a garbage, just like Solomon Hill. Today’s NBA is heavily overvalueing the "3 and D" thing. There’s a huge difference between a player who is a good 3 point shooter or defender and between a player who CAN make a three or able to play some defense. Because they are not good at it, they just can do something. And there are a lot of Carroll, Hill, Caldwell-Pope etc, who can make some three pointers and they may play some defense, but they are not elite, not good in that cathegory… Under average basketball players with 30% 3FG  and some defensive awarness (they are just on the court) making tens of millions because of that misunderstanding.
In my opinion there are 3 type of defender:
1: The All star game like (bad) defender: Like James Harden, saw the opponent coming an he steps away from his way
    2. The average one, the player, who is on the court: not stepping away, he’s just there, not doing anything special… and most of the players is in that cathegory who’s labelled as a 3 and D specialist
    3. The good defender, like Tony Allen, who makes it hard to score on him.
and there is a huge gap between the 2. and 3.
It’s sad but the Carroll type players will be getting 16 million contracts anually just because two average skills, where they are not excelling, they have the ability, just not delivering. It’s a trend…

This is so true. This label of 3 and D players have been getting a lot mediocre players paid recently, and it just doesn’t seem right. It’s almost as if if you are a role player who can shoot threes and can seem to defend well, you’re automatically labeled a valuable asset.

For us who really watch basketball and don’t just label a guy a 3 and D guy because we here it in the media can distinguish those who can really play defense. Just some of these players, for me, include:

      1) Tony Allen (as you said)

      2) Avery Bradley

      3) Iman Shumpert

      4) Victor Oladipo

      5) Marcus Smart

Tha fads include: (those labeled great defenders and 3 and D guys but are just average)

      1) Demarre Carrol

      2) Kent Bazemore

      3) Solomon Hill (as mentioned)

      4) Courtney Lee

      5) Arron Afflalo/Garret Temple

I seriously think the whole term (3-d) was created by agents and sports media to create a role and value for run of the mill ball players.. it’s such a used car tactic to call a role player in the league a 3-d guy, I don’t think I’ve ever had a conversation and heard a gm or scout use the term..

3-d is a euphemism for average ball players.

Yeah Carroll is trash and now were stuck with him. Plays tired and doesnt give 100% effort. Always has some sort of BS nagging injury and takes bad shots. Lowry and Derozan show up on gameday in hoodies and sweatshirts he shows up in a fur coat with three chains.

Classic example of a player getting paid then preserving his body for his next contract. I think this should be a sign to the rest of the league. You develop 3 and D through the draft or through decent short term signings you dont overpay for effort players. There are exceptions but you gotta know for a fact the player wont change on you.

We cant give minutes to Powell he is unrestricted. Hes gone next year so we have to make an effort to establish Carroll or build value in Powell and include him in a deal. We got Carroll to gaurd Durant, Leonard, James, Butler and Geirge yet these guys own us everytime. It was so.bad that against the Bulls Lowry started gaurding Butler

Yea, I can’t believe Casey still kept Carroll in the game. At that point, I think CoJo would have been the better option against Butler, even with the size discrepancy. At least Cojo can deny the ball and actually make Butler feel uncomfortable with his dribble.

    Paid more and working less.

Sounds like half of my colleagues.

If I had a job, that is.

Seems like Carroll reads nbadraft.net forum. Since this thread was made he is averaging 19ppg and shooting 50% from 3 He seems to get confident on the degensive end when he is involved offensively. Although it would be nice to see him do it while gaurding an elite SF.
