valentineWon’t affect Duke very much. The kid did a lot this season to save it, reclassified when Coach K needed a PG desperately. I think he saw the writing on the wall because I think Jackson would play over him. Look for him to move closer to home.

D7H7NParticipantFamilies have a big influence on a student athlete. Both have their eyes set on professional basketball (whether it’s the NBA or overseas) so it can be very frustrating when the parent(s) doesn’t get to see their 4-5 star recruit son get enough playing time.

BleedingBlueParticipantHe had all the opportunities in the world with 26+ minutes per game and yet had one of the worst seasons ever by a Duke point guard, not to mention his helicopter dad constantly complaining. I still think he has a lot of potential and wish him the best, but the team won’t miss him next year.

TarHeelRavenParticipantI think Thornton might be really regretting graduating a year early and enrolling at Duke. He was supposed to step in and be the full-time starting PG and help Duke contend for a repeat after Tyus Jones left. The guy has potential, but he was just not ready for big-time college basketball. K put the full court press on him and got him to commit. Now he’s transferring and has to sit out a year. This will really hurt his development in my opinion. Committing to Duke was just the wrong move for Derryck.

phila9012ParticipantI think if he redshirted at duke and came back stronger after next year he would be in great shape to start and lead the team for 2 or 3 years, he seems like a 3 or 4 year college player and borderline NBA player like quin cook. It was better for him to be playing at duke last year than in high school, so a red shirt year at duke would have been helpful

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantGood for him. Duke lied to him by saying they were gonna give him the keys and then turn around and recruit Frank Jackson. Hope Thorton goes somewhere where he can hoop. I think he will go to west coast, he just said he wants to be closer to home. UNLV has Jaylen Fisher, USC maybe, UCLA PG has Ball and Holiday. So my guess is he is gonna go to Arizona with Kobi Simmons prolly being a one and done.

ph90702Jaylen Fisher might not come. It depends heavily on what Ryan Miller decides to do.

mtpandolfiParticipantJackson is a combo guard that didn’t even play PG in high school. This was about Thornton’s father caring about his son’s stats over team success.

ph90702With all due respect, a five star recruit isn’t going to a school to sit on the bench and play ten minutes per game as a sophomore.

mtpandolfiParticipantAnd instead of earning the starting spot, he felt entitled to it and took the easy way out.
There was an article in today’s Charlotteville Daily Progress about Javin DeLaurier. In it he says that he knows he’s low down the depth chart next year, but "iron sharpens iron" and that to be the best you need to compete against the best. Apparently that’s not the case in the Thornton household.

Afactor4ParticipantNot sure what the deal is here. He had plenty of time to play and didn’t play very well in most games. Dad just seemed to be complaining about him not playing crunch time when he didn’t deserve it. Obviously Jackson coming in changes things, but whatever.
Someone should tell him to stop coming to Shooters. Not cool bro.
