If Derrick Williams was 6’10 (ideal size for a PF), would he be the #1 pick in the draft?

If Derrick Williams had the necessary foot speed to keep up with small forwards and was still 6’8", would he be the #1 in the draft?

This is sarcastic right?  I know you are using satire because you’re not dumb.  But taking this satirical question the way it is you’re right.  Derrick Williams is 6’9 and can effectively play both forward positions making it somehow harder for teams to choose.

Okay, I’ll rephrase it.  Is he a LOCK as the #1 pick rather than moving from 1-4?

The cavs dont have a need at PF and its more than just his lack of lateral quickness to guard opposing SF. Its his overall skillset, he hasn’t shown to be a good ball handler or that he can beat defenders off the dribble. Most of his offense was him catching the ball on the low block, transition baskets, and making timely cuts to the basket while his guards where penetrating. He can’t create for himself on the perimeter.

I am sort of sick of this question on here. He can play 2 positions will shine at one position or the other eventually.. I think he would be more entertaining from SF but i can see why many think he is a 4..  While he should  be a lock at 2 but minny has the pick. Derrick Williams just needs intensity and tenacity to be able to cover the 3.. If thats his only problem at the 3 then we shouldn’t be asking this question

This is a legit question by TOL23 – similar could be said if Kemba had 2 more inches on him, or if Jimmer was 6’6.

If Williams is 6’10 with his wingspan adjusted – Yes he is a lock at #1. Especially given the hype now around Dirk and the desire for a lot of teams to find a 4 who can stretch the floor as well as take it inside.

If Williams has quicker foot speed and can put the ball on the floor with the same measurments – I’d say he’s a lock at #1 again because IMO the biggest thing hurting him is how teams project him – many teams are reluctant to build around combo forwards. With the above mentioned skill sets, he’d be a clearly defined SF which I think more teams would feel comfortable as making him their franchise guy they build around.

Anyone who doesn’t think the "eye test" doesn’t matter isn’t paying attention to the NBA/NFL drafts. It’s why Hasheem Thabeet was a lottery pick and why Hassan Whiteside was considered a lottery pick up until he had all those terrible workouts where he admited on tape in Utah "…maybe I’m not that good."

Consider if Kemba was 6’3 and if Jimmer was 6’6-6’7?

If Jimmer was 6’8 he’s Adam Morrison but a little stronger without the pyscho problems making him an excellent NBA player.

If Kemba Walker were 6’3 it wouldn’t make a difference unless his height to wingspan ratio grew.

And the more I think about it Derrick Williams could be viewed as a bigger version of Ron Artest.  Artest is no doubt a small forward with lock down defense ability despite weighing 260 pounds and never being known for his elite foot speed.  Derrick Williams does indeed have tremendous lateral quickness, is an explosive athlete, and shot nearly 60% from 3.  Williams numbers are not inflated he absolutely dominated.  If you leave Williams open he will easily hit everything out to the 3 point line.  If you put one man on him regardless if it’s in the post or on the perimeter he is scoring.  I don’t know why people think he don’t have good ball handling ability but let me assure you that D.Will does indeed have the adequate ball handling ability to take players off the dribble from the small forward spot.

I don’t know why people aren’t looking at Derrick Williams like a 6’9, 245 pound  Small Forward who can score both inside and out and give it his all on defense.  And he’s still only 20 years old and is a gym rat and he should be a lock to go number one.
