Hopefully he makes a quick recovery. Anyone know the timetable for meniscus injuries?

Forget the quick recovery, we got to think about Derrick Rose’s confidence now, dude already was still playing a little timid and now he gets this, dudes confidence might be super shook now, IDC how healthy he gets, his confidence will never be the same, he will always now be thinking "What If".

ACL tear and Meniscus tear, it’s alot to think about and he’s only 25 man.

first off, we see injuries all the time, but for some reason, I just feel so bad for him as opposed to someone else.  part of it has to do with I just think he is a good guy and so humble.

secondly, I think confidence wise it can go either way.  it can make him even more determined.  he could also feel that him trying to "play softer" is pointless and think that if he gets hurt again he doesnt really have much control over it…so you play hard until you cant anymore.

Bernard King would be a good source of inspiration.

He will miss at least 6 weeks…I say it will be 2 months til he is back. Here is an article about NBA players tearing their meniscus.

Tough news for a kid who has worked hard to get back.

Now, as to recovery time, its much less drastic than an ACL tear. Some elite athletes can return to practice within 2-3 weeks (obviously that’s rare). However, many athletes can return within 6 weeks if rehabbed properly.

Best of luck to Derrick Rose in his recovery.

Another thing is I blame the training staff, why did Rose come in this season much heavier? More weight on the knees is bad and it’s obvious he doesn’t have good knees just stupid, stupid.

This is bad, but it could have been a lot worse. I wish Rose’s training staff weren’t just focused on muscle and built up his knee stability and functionality. Rose’s knees have always looked a bit precarious.

I already respected his decision throughout the playoffs to sit, now I respect him and his decision even more because no one seen this coming. We as fans are greedy and eager to fulfill our visual enjoyment of seeing these players go all out on the court by give it their all, but one has to realize these athletes are human just like us and health is the #1 priority to every athlete.

Could have been worse, but is still pretty bad. He was already playing kinda bad which was expected since he had had over a year off. I just don’t want him to dwell on the way he was playing before the injury and let the injuries get in his head because he still has all the talent in the world, but he just needs to get his confidence back and stack healthy.

I think some of the blame has to be placed on Thib’s coaching style. He runs his starters into the ground minutes-wise, and it meant that Deng and Noah (along with several other Bulls) played hurt pretty much all last year, and it’s off to the same pattern this year. There have been too many injuries on the Bulls to narrow this down to dumb luck. I think Thib’s rotation needs to be significantly altered if he wants to keep his players healthy.

How long he is out just depends on where the tear is and the severity of it.

Here’s what we know so far:

    – The tear is to his medial meniscus, which is in the inside part of your knee.

    Here’s what we don’t know:

    – The pattern of the tear. The pattern of the tear will determined if it can be repaired or not.

    – The location of the tear. A meniscus has a "red" and "white" zone. The red zone is on the very outter part of the meniscus and has a ton of blood supply. Blood promotes healing. The white zone is in the inner part of the meniscus and there’s little to no blood supply. A location of a tear could be red-red (ideal), red-white (very promising) and white-white (SOL). IF a tear is in the white-white zone, there’s really no chance of it healing and repairing it, so it’s almost always just cut out.

This is all information that we probably won’t ever know because we’re not Rose’s doctor nor will we ever see his MRI. We’ll only be able to tell what his possible situation is by the amount of the time he’s out.

IF Rose’s tear is in the white-white zone, regardless if the tear pattern is minor or severe, they’ll just cut it out. When a meniscus is cut out, the player usually returns in 6-8 weeks. This leads to a quicker return, BUT… It’s not really great for the player in the long run (look at D. Wade who now lacks cushioning and is bone on bone, hence all of the bone bruises).

IF Rose’s tear pattern isn’t awful and the tear is in red-red or red-white zone, then the tear can be repaired. But get this… It takes A LOT longer for a repaired meniscus to heal. It takes about 3-4 months! This is what Russell Westbrook had. This keeps you out longer, BUT it’s great for your career in the long term.

Here’s what I want to know… IF his tear can be repaired, will he have it repaired and do what’s best for his long term career or will he just have it cut out, so he can return sooner to his team? I ask this because we all know how much criticism he took for sitting out the entire season last year.

I really hope its repairable. If its taken out Rose would start losing his athleticism at an earlier age and being realistic, he depends on it more than nearly any player in the league.

     A few other thoughts:

His tear is fresh and operating on a fresh tear is always the best option (not giving a chance for particles to float around and get in joint space, etc). His quads are already super strong from rehabbing his ACL tear, so IF his tear is cut out, he should be able to return rather quickly. I’m sure they’ll operate immediately.

    Why did the tear happen?

He could have a naturally thin meniscus in his knee for all we know. A tear can happen to anybody though. All it takes for your foot to be planted one way and you jerk/twist your knee while it’s bent. Or maybe his body distribution is off and his right knee could’ve been overcompensating for his left. Your meniscus is responsible for weight distribution and maybe his right knee was just taking on too much.

    Will this damage his physche?

I think it will a little. He’ll lose a little confidence in himself because of this. He trained hard all summer and got hurt again. However, I don’t think it’ll hurt him as much as some people are suggesting. A meniscus tear isn’t like an ACL tear. It’s not even close to being as severe physically and mentally. I think the good thing is that he’s surrounded by a lot of positive people.

Damn man why him? Between him and Deron Williams the teams I had at 3rd and 4th in the East aren’t looking to good. Let’s just hope he recovers as soon as he can. Bulls can still hold it down until he gets back

I for one have always stood by his decisions not to return.  I think its ridiculous to not think about a player’s career in the long term sense..especially one as young as he who is not even in their prime yet.  Look at his improvement as a player before the ACL tear.  I hope he really thinks about his career in the long term and not come back too soon.

Coming from someone who’s had the exact same injuries in the same order, I really feel bad for Derrick. I tore my ACL my senior year of high school and I think the pressure I put on my other knee during recovery weakened it which in turn caused the meniscus tear. I still haven’t had surgery to fix the meniscus, which has turned me into a straight jump shooter (not my strength before). Hopefully Rose can have a quick recovery and regain his former confidence.

This is what I think has happened to Derrick Rose. I think that his right knee has been carrying too much of a load.

During his rehab, there needs to be serious focus on not just strengthening his right quad, BUT making sure that he’s distributing his weight evenly.

While Rose is going to miss quite a bit of time with this, I still think he can come back 100% and be the same player he was before.
