I am a big fan of Derrick Favors, with the rumors that Utah is offering a Max exstention to P.Millsap I am wondering what Utah’s plans are for DF. Will they let Al Jefferson walk as a unrestricted F/A next year? Or are they ok with DF coming off the bench b/c i feel he has earned a starting role. Also what do you guys feel his upside/pontential is at this point?

No way utah will give millsap a max deal, he’s good but he’s not worth that much, they will try to ease favors into the starting lineup and male millsap the 6th man, I think one or both Jefferson and Paul will be traded next year if you ask me. Favors has a ton of upside, he’s only 22 and is already a freak athlete and a lockdown defender, all he needs is a solid postgame and a jumper

just like what minesota is trying to do with willliams i think derrick favors and enes kanter should be traded to a team that needs them the most cuz i think favors is a solid big for any team and i think utah should release that clog on the Center & Pf spot

but he is one of those guys that has endless upside, which is good but will get paid based on that before he proves it. When its time for him to get an extension he will get offered more millions a seasons than points per game he averages that season. For some crazy reason I would rather have Favors than Tristan Thompson, Derrick Williams, etc. (almost any young big) even Monroe. I dont know why, he is flat less productive than those guys but his ceiling is higher than all of them.

Somebody posted a "Favors is getting tutoring from Malone" thread, so hopefully that helps him. Malone increased his talent and shooting more than any big man I ever seen throughout the years.

Be very bright future, I can see him put 20-12-2-1-2 for many years. if you Utah 33 + minutes per game this season, I can see him play the all-star

I see a very strong rebounder.  He was averaging 7 rpg in New Jersey right out of the gate before Kris Humprhies started to take his minutes.

I think Favors will be a 10 rpg player as soon as he starts getting major minutes.  I like his offensive upside on the block, but I don’t know if he’ll be good enough away from the bucket to be a big time scorer.  I think his physical attributes will allow him to be a more productive player, but I see his future ( game wise ) to be similar to Antonio Davis.  I just see more production because Favors is a bigger, more athletic player.  Maybe 16 ppg 11 rpg in his prime.

yeeaaah i also believe Favors is their future for sure..

even with Wall and Cousins in his class i loved him the most coming out of HS(now im a bigtime Cousins fan too since UK days when he become true BIGMEN)..so im so happy he is not failing and his potential and hopes for the third pick were right..i actually believe Utha won that trade over Nets cause Favors could be just as big of the star as Deron is and they couldn’t get anything better back then..

too bad this guy gets underrated he is stuck between already young but allstar Griffin and between big future hopes about Anthony Davis.. Derrick is definitelly top3 best young PF and will be top5 if not the same top3 for years competing with those two mentioned before..

he has everything his frame might filled up to like 260 he looks still just as great if not better athlete he was in college those 7’4 wingspan helps too also..and he has some real skills and fundamentals too..i believe he will be one of the best of those a little old school back to the basket bigs, one of the best defensive players overall too, and his jumpshot isn’t going to be a problem too, he already has it..

First, there is no rumor (except perhaps the one you just started) that the Jazz are considering offering Sap a max deal.  There is no chance that happens.  I read a lot of Jazz blogs and absolutely no one suggests that as a possibility.  Signals are that the Jazz will sign him in the $9-10M/year range if they re-sign him at all.

Second, regarding your very good question (what’s Favors’ role going to be in Utah): Favors is the future of the franchise.  Utah sees him as their future.  He was extremely raw last year, especially compared to the highly skilled Sap/Al combo.  However, even w/o many go-to moves, he was still arguably as productive as either.  I expect him to be a 30+ mpg player this year as the team’s starting 4.  I think Favors will be a 14/10 with 2 bpg and 1.5 spg player this year, which will be the year he really breaks onto the scene.  He has two more years on his rookie deal before he gets big money.  I fully expect him to get a max deal though in two years–hopefully he’ll be worth it by then.

No, he hasn’t. Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap are better players. They carried that team. Favors is a pretty decent player at this point of his career, but if is taking over for one of those two Utah is in the lottery. Why would anyone want that? Why would someone rather see a player pile on statistics on a bad team rather than contribute to a good young team that still has room for growth?

I believe Utah has offered Millsap $26 million over 3 years which equates to roughly the same as his last deal which Kevin Pritchard frontloaded when he tried to sign him to the Blazers. Utah with Millsap and Jefferson as their starting frontcourt and two highly rated big men on the bench in Favours and Kanter will need to make a decison soon. It’s okay having a deep rotation but they will not be able to afford to pay all 4 when the later two come off their rookie deals or it would be stupid to.

As I mentioned above when Millsap resigned his previous deal, Utah almost had a similar problem a few years back when Millsap was developing and they had Boozer and Okur as their established frontcourt.

How I would see it panning out is that Utah have looked to tie up Millsap to a very reasonable deal for what he provides and to acknowledge the service he has given them over the last 6 years. They want to try and avoid him reaching FA as someone is likely to put a $40 million plus 4 year deal his way if he has another good season.

Al Jefferson is currently on $12 million for this coming season and if he has another 20/10 region season then we can guess that someone would offer him a deal getting towards near max which I doubt Utah would look to match especially given they have two readymade replacements needing playing time. If Millsap did refuse to resign and said he wanted to enter FA then Utah may well look to try and resign Jefferson  instead.

Basically I figure that Utah want to and realise that long term they can only afford to keep one of Jefferson and Millsap and so are looking to try and facilitate this. If they get Millsap tied up then they can either let Jefferson play the season out and give Favours and Kanter extra time to develop or they could field trade offers. Jefferson will have trade value even as an expiring contract as a team may want to get his Bird Rights and thus maybe Utah get a nice package back. Utah can then just slot Favours or Kanter into Jefferson’s starting role and look at things long term.

Favours will be up for a renewal next summer and if he commits then he’d want good playing time and even though he’s only just turned 21, after a couple of years in the League probably needs extra playing time. Utah would thus have a long term frontcourt rotation of Millsap ( Jefferson if Millsap doesn’t resign possibly), Favours and Kanter. They could maybe draft another young big man or carry a veteran who could sit on the bench but play minutes when required say a Kurt Thomas type player.

I own one of Derrick Favors best Rookie cards, b/c I feel like he will become Utah’s best player going foward. Favors has been rated a top 3 prospect, since he was a 6’6" 7th grader!

(10-11 NT Favors Gold RC BGS 9.5 #12/25)

If he becomes an NBA All-Star, I made some nice coin on this card. I could see Favors avg. 15 PPG, 9 RPG, 1.5 BPG this season?

Favors is the face of the franchise, he has been asked if he would like that label / position and he said yes , he wants to be the man. At the end of the season/playoffs Favors was probably the best player on the team and that is why Corbin started him the last couple of games. Most people in the know feel Favors will be the starting 4 when the season begins. Milsap was offered a 3 yr 25 million contract and that is the most the Jazz can offer him under the new CBA.. The Jazz philosophy has always been you earn your minutes and most people think Favors earned the right to start at the end of the season. Milsaps is very versatile, he can swing and play the 3 and his work ethic is what the Jazz love.  Milsap may want to be a starter and therefore he may want to become a free agent and see what the market will bring, but I think he should accept the offer. This yr he will likely be their 6th man and he may not get quite the minutes and his stats may be lower than last yr.
I would rather see the Jazz move Big Al than Milsap but Big Al’s contract will make moving him much harder than moving Paul.  Big Al is the most consistent scorer the Jazz have but he also is a liability defensively and with Favors likely improvement and with Mo & Marivin, Hayward, & Burks they should be able to make up his offense, therefore I would like to see the Jazz move Big Al and let Kanter get more minutes, Favors become a bigger part of the offense and get a young player of value for Al while the getting is good.

Favors whenever he gets starter PT is the most productive of their bigs. Utah is so dumb for proloning the Jefferson/Millsap era when they have both reached their ceiling with Utah. It’s time for them to just let their younger players take over

Utah have a load of expiring deals this coming season and are owed a first rounder from GSW via the Nets so have the option to make a trade or two if needed. They have a decent experienced core for this coming season but also have the real future in Favours, Kanter, Hayward and possibly Burks.

As regards Favours starting, I’d have no issue with that and using Millsap as 6th man as it would enable a younger guy to play alongside the more experienced guy in both the first and the second unit. Starting is also not a huge issue in my mind, more who gets what minutes and who plays down the stretch.
