So it was well publicized that the players didn’t like to play for Brian Shaw. I heard Joffrey Lauvergne in an interview yesterday,he says he didn’t see anything at the beginning(He arrived two weeks before Shaw was fired),but when he was replaced by Hunt,he says the players basically started to play again. I understand that you don’t like the coach, but man, they’re professionals!

But the thing that surprised me the most,is that he says he didn’t play under coach Hunt because "he told me he didn’t know me,so he couldn’t play me,considering it was his first coaching experience and that he had no time to experience anything". On the same radio show was Sandrine Gruda, played in the WNBA last year in Los Angeles, great international player, one of the best she said "I experienced the same thing last year. The coach took me in his office and …asked me what my strengths and witnesses are" . She also said that, even if the NBA and WNBA are the best leagues, the coaches are NOT the best. I mean isn’t that alarming for american coaches? NOT KNOWING A PLAYER THAT’S ON YOUR TEAM??? And Joffrey Lauvergne isn’t Giannis Antetokounmpo neither,he played in the Euroleague top 16 last year. Can’t he even type his name on youtube?

I don’t think that’s too outlandish. If youtube mixtapes were what we judged a player on, than CJ Leslie would have been the first pick in the draft a few years ago. If I was a coach I would go into a new gig with no expections except doing my best to win, and try to cast aside all previous expectations and knowledge of the team I was taking over. I would try out different lineups, different scemes, and try to find out who does what and who plays well together.

That was one of the funnest parts of watching the Celtics play this year, was Brad Stevens constand lineup adjustments and rotation set ups. Guys like Crowder/Turner/Jerebko/Zeller were never really used to their stregths or giving an opportunity to play heavy minutes (except turner), and for the most part they all played effectively. I think coaches get too strict when it comes to keeping certain lineups or playing certain players. We saw this could hurt a team like Kendrick Perkins when he was on the Thunder, and how it could help with Steve Kerr and the Warriors.

I think a player needs to earn his keep, but if a coach isn’t playing you because he doesn’t know you, it’s on you to prove that you should be playing. Mirotic was barely playing in the beggining of the year, but he shined in the chances he was given, and he became a big focal point of the Bulls offense later in the year when Rose went down. Basketball, and life in general, is all about taking advantage of your opportunities.

On the comment about coaching, I don’t think anyone thinks that NBA coaches are the best in the world. Basketball has become an extremely popular sport worldwide over the past 20 years, and it isn’t outlandish to think that the field has top level coaches. I think you also aren’t giving the  credit to american coaches, as they might not be the best, but there is def. levels of coaching in the US. Kevin Ollie, Hoiberg, Coach K, Tom Izzo, Rick Pitino, and many more are all great coaches, but they choose to coach at the collegiate level instead (Pitino wasn’t ready to be a coach of an NBA team, micromanaged too much). You also have to take into account that the NBA is a business first and foremost, and their is a marketability too it as well. I can count the number of Euro coaches I know on one hand, and can tell you nothing of their personalities. But guys like Doc Rivers, Marc Jackson, JVG, George Karl, and Steve Kerr are all guys who we know, and who bring a certain personality and auro to the game.

Dude, do you really think NBA scouting deparments make decisions based on youtube mixtapes??? This guys have access to all the tapes they want. Any coach in the world should take the time to know all of his players or at least delegate that job to an assistant coach or scout. That guy is absolutely ridiculous. He can’t be a coach in a high-level league like the NBA.

Maybe Hunt was too nice. Lauvergne looked like a fringe player on the court. And basically I do not see him as a rotation player in the league. Every advanced statistics tells the same story, this guy is hurting your team.

It definitely is still a continuing theme. A fan tweeted Ty Lawson and asked if he’d play for the Mavs and his reply was “I wish”. The tweet was deleted pretty quickly but didn’t get past the front office. Ty has been the biggest disappointment off the court and could use an attitude adjustment or change of scenery before we bring in a lotto pick.

As far as Geoffrey, I thought he was a nice energy guy when he did see the light of day. I could see him being in the big man rotation but am not sure about the Melvin Hunt comments. I mean, Hunt was trying to impress upper management so he could keep the job and Darrell Arthur and JJ Hickson were much better options off the bench.
