Apparently DeMar DeRozan want the Toronto Raptors to draft Daniel Orton with the 13th pick. This is what he said :

I saw most of [Kentucky’s] games. Daniel didn’t get a lot of publicity because of all the other freshmen, but he did great when he played. I like his size and toughness. Look for him to make his mark on defense with boards and blocks.”–DeMar DeRozan, Raptors, G

What are your thoughts on this pick? Is it the right move for Toronto?

I’m not very high on Orton, so I’m going to disagree with DeMar on this one.

If CB4 leaves, they are going to need another big man. Regardless, I think they need a big man even if Bosh stays. Orton certainly wouldn’t make up for Bosh, but he could POTENTIALLY give them a defensive presence on the floor which is something they haven’t had. He definitely is a question mark imo. Orton seems like the type of player who could fill in a small niche on a team. If Cole Aldrich is on the board, I would definitely take him over Orton.

DeMar never actually said he wanted to draft Orton. He may have implied to, but I don’t think the Raptor’s draft pick is even in his hands. The one player Bryan Colangelo would consult with before the draft would be CB4 just because his future with us is so important. However, it is obvious that he will most likely leave the Raps. As for Orton, I’m not a big fan of him. Not juts because of his poor stats, but i just don’t like him overall as a player. I think that with this pick, if the Raptors don’t see a legitimate future star available, they might as well swing for the fences and get a high risk/high reward type player like they did with DeRozan. After all, we weren’t a playoff team last year, so why would we draft someone safe like Aldrich who will just be worse than Bosh. That will get us nowhere. If Colangelo really wants defense and he wants a big, might as well go for Whiteside for example who might turn out to be a defensive beast if developed correctly. Bryan is already trying to save his job, so he will likely make some crazy moves this off-season that hopefully will pan out and save him.

If you take Orton before the 25th or so pick you are going to regret it.

What does it matter what DeRozan wants when he hasn’t established himself in league yet? He should worry more about his own career at this point.

i dont think anyone said DeRozan is going to have any influense on who the raps draft… but theres nothing wrong with a player having an opinion

Never listen to players on decisions that affect the team. Draft Avery Bradley, then take the phone off the hook.

This isnt him telling management what they should do. It isnt him demanding. He was just part of an ESPN aticle. He did what the interviewer told him to do. He got paid the Raps got paid everyone is happy. Dont put too much thought into it unless its a franchise player making the statement anyways.
