I’m a little disappointed to hear Chris McCullough is entering the draft. To me, it seems like he really could’ve used another year in school to boost his stock, especially considering he’s coming off major knee surgery. He has good physical tools but his game is far from NBA ready. He seems like a second round project who will probably have to fight to make a roster and may have to spend considerable time in the d league at this point. I think he could’ve been a sure-fire first round pick with a little more seasoning. I’m sure the situation at Syracuse played into his decision though.

McCullough was projected as high as a Top 5 pick on this site before the injury. Even as a Syracuse fan, I thought that may have been an overvaluation, but I still think he was at least a top 10 pick in the early part of the season, and maybe could have worked his way as high as #5 had he been healthy. But there’s no reason why he should fall to the second round. If I’m a team picking in the 20-30 range and I see a player with #5 or #10 pick value, I’m snatching him up right away, even if he misses the first month of the season. Sure he may need time to develop his body, but that’s really the only thing holding him back right now. He’s got great length, athleticism, and even some range to stretch the floor. Once he gets healthy again, gains some experience, and puts on some weight and refines some post moves, he’s going to be a steal if he falls to the late first or early second. If the draft were today, I could maybe see him going as high as #13 to Phoenix or somewhere just right outside the lottery.

McCullough is in a similar situation as Jared Sullinger was in. Sullinger fell to Boston with the 21st pick so I expect McCullough to land in the Washington, Dallas, Portland, Chicago range.

If McCullough does have the upside his potential hints at then his draft stock will not plumet. I’d say he’d be challenging to be a late lottery pick and should go in the top 20 at worse. But I agree if he had played another year at Syracuse he would have had a platform to be a potential top 5 pick in 2016.
