drk3351ParticipantHey everyone, today I analyzed the SL performance of Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell. He didn’t have the best showing but he still of course has a very bright future. Thanks for watching.

cabbycabParticipantI was super high on this kid and still think he is special. However he is much slower than I thought. Quicker version of Kyle Anderson?

Magic JordanParticipantI think I am in the minority of those who think his athleticism or lack thereof is being a touch overrated. I think it’s more the way he plays the game in a slow manner though don’t confuse that with me saying he is a great athlete.
With that being said, prior to the draft Chad Ford said he saw Russell record a 39 inch vert. It is also what the sports science video said about him. Ultimately I am wondering where in the Fugg did they get that number? The only thing I can think of is Chard Ford pulling it out of his ass and the Sports Science video choosing to cite a notoriously washy reporter. There is no way he has a 39 inch vert because I don’t feel like I have ever seen him get more than 20 inches off the ground….. Tops. While I may think his speed (not quickness) is alright…. There is no way someone could sell me on that vert. If he is 6’5" that would put his head close to the rim when jumping. He would have to have incredible restrain to say "ehhhh I’m only going to jump 15 inches off the ground every time." Classic Ford.
I think he’s a slightly underwhelming athlete but a real good basketball player. Highly skilled and I have no doubt that he will adjust fine to the pace of the league but it will probably take 2 years. I’m a Lakers fan and I value skill over athleticism if both aren’t an option and I’m not worried about him.

llperezi only watched one full game of his which was the first game then i saw bits and pieces of other games from summer league. Im not worried. He does have trouble getting seperation and can be forced into tough shots becasue of it. But he is a good shooter, his form is fine and he had a lot of passes that could have been assits that teammates just blew. He needs to work on decision making and not trying to thread passes in traffic. Needs to just keep doing his thing, people overreact to summer league. Rose averaged 9.5ppg on 33% shooting his rookie summer league. Weve also seen guys go crazy in summer league and not end up doing anything in real games. I actually did a google search on past summer leagues for rookies and one of ht efirst pop ups was an old nbadraft thread about how much michael carter williams stunk in summer league and a bunch of users on here were already boasting about how they knew he was drafted way too high.

MopgrassParticipantThat was rough to watch. It looks like the size and speed of other players shocked him. It made it hard for him to get off quality shots and passes. Then once he made a few mistakes his confidence was rattled. Even his shot form was off at times (from what it was). Supposedly he slowed down the last game (not worrying about the speed of others) and that was his best game. At best he’ll get it together and be great. At worst Clarkson plays PG and Russell plays as a 3-point hitting passer of a SG. Either way, I like Clarkson at PG.

MopgrassParticipantHe got a heck of a lot better at dishing at the end of the year. He rapidly improved at most everything. I wouldn’t put much past him.

rileymcshea3ParticipantLol now no one is on the D’Angelo Russell band wagon. He had some bad games and still adjusting to the speed, but it’s summer league(Aka pick up games). Countless times players like Josh Selby looked amazing and D-Rose didn’t look good.
I think Russell came into summer league trying to prove he can play point guard instead of just being a aggressive basketball player and looking for his shot. He also realized it and attacked way more in the last couple of games and started looking like the number 2 overall pick.
One thing that stood out to me about him was his ability to grab a rebound and then take it coast to coast for easy buckets in transition.

Meditated StatesParticipantIs not a adequate barometer. Rose is a freak athelete Russell is not. Russell should be fine, he wont be better than Oak thats for sure. I would not take much out of the summer L for a rookie but honestly he will see bigger faster guards come regular season, who will bother his shot more. I said he would struggle a lot in year one for those particular reasons. He is smart enough to figure out what he can and cant do and with his J and passing he should be ok. His D and work off the the dribble will be his weaknesses. He will have trouble finishing most of his career unless he gets very strong up top. I am very interested to see how well he shoots over quickness and length with consistency.
