dmalk1229ParticipantHey all, today was the first game I actually watched D’angelo Russel play, probably wasn’t the best game to choose lol, but I did see some nice flashes.
And when looking at his nbadraft profile I remembered James Harden was compared to the Brandon Roy/ Manu Ginobli as well. There is really no point to what I am getting at but I just think its funny that they are both 6’5 left handed ball dominant guards, with creeply similiar statisitics. James harden freshman season at Arizona State: ppg:17.8, TRB 5.3, Ast: 3.2; Stl:2.3 vs D’angelo Russel ppg:17.7, TRB: 4.7 Ast: 5.3 Steals 1.8. Russel at this point seems like a better distributor, but it’s way to early too tell, as to the type of player he will be at the next level. But he does look like he could develop into a great player!

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantRussell and Harden have the same form on there jumpshot also. What makes Harden so great is his driving ability, Russell has a good handle but it’s not Hardenesque yet. If he plays downhill like Harden and Manu with the stroke he has he will be good.
Ohio State has played one of the worse schedules I have ever seen so far so his numbers can be misleading. I swear they played a girls middle school team in between Wright State and Moore head U.
I don’t think he’s 6’5 but his arms are super long. He’s not a great body language guy but he’s a lottery pick and thinks he is more talented than everyone else thinks. That’s a compliment by the way and that supremacy will bode well for him like it did Harden.

reanimatorParticipantNowhere near as strong or athletic

For_Never_EverParticipantNeither was Harden.
James Harden athleticism and conditioning was questioned through out his HS/College days up until the Combine.

Harden is 230, fam. Russell will be lucky if he can get up to 210. HUGE difference in strength.
Harden is MUCH better vertically and just as shifty.
Really bad comparison.

For_Never_EverParticipantSo your comparing him to today’s James Harden ? Because with everything your saying you didn’t see James Harden before he got in the league.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantSo your saying that despite all the obvious similarities in there games, because Harden weighs 20lbs. more its a terrible comparison?
0- Posted on: Tue, 12/30/2014 - 4:49pm #960620
reanimatorParticipantYes, because Russell can’t play through contact nor can he finish at the rim……..which is pretty huge part of Harden’s game.
0- Posted on: Tue, 12/30/2014 - 5:10pm #960628
For_Never_EverParticipantHow about prime Manu Ginobili to James Harden ? Because he out weighs Manu likely by at least 20lbs.

reanimatorParticipantWhat is there to see? His frame is his frame. Russell isn’t EVER going to have Harden’s frame or strength. And I saw Harden in HS and in college, he was a much better vertical athlete than Russell.
Look, Russell is a very fun play to watch but a lot of people are engaging in a lot of hyperbole.
Tell you what, let me know when he can shoot above 30% against real competition and I’ll compare him to franchise guys.

For_Never_EverParticipantI’m not saying Russel is going to be Harden. However, you make it out like today’s Harden has always been this player athletically and condition wise. It’s easy to say Harden is a very good athlete and strong now since he has been in the league.

tuck243ParticipantI don’t see the Harden in his game outside of the passing… Harden utilize that step back a lot and can finish through contact… He was 220 when he left ASU vs 180 lbs that is Russell (Harden still had 15 lbs on him as a freshman)… I really like Russell’s game, but saying he’s Harden is strecthing it… Not even talking about his ceiling, just who you would compare him to… I don’t even think Brandon Roy is a good comparison… I think D’Angelo is more of PG than he is SG which he why he’s struggling so much… He’s forced to score which is something OSU needs because no one is going to do it…

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantD Russ is more Steph Curry.. Been watching him for years. Hes crafty, really good shooter, and a good slasher with nice floaters.

OhCanada-ParticipantWatched him play a few times this year he has been very impressive and he reminds me of Greivis Vasquez with more athletisism and strength. Comparing him to Harden off of statistics is a huge stretch especially before conference or tournament play. Also Harden made huge improvements as a rookie and sophomore in the NBA and was questioned as far as his in game athletisism goes before the draft combine. To me they are very different and it is very hard to compare anyone to an NBA Superstar let alone Dangelo Russell.
