notsofastParticipantwatched d-smoove in montverde and every single osu game.
straight fool’s gold. neg me =]
no perimeter defensive or 1 on 1 defense. lacks lateral quickness to even stay with a guy like Linsanity.
quick pull up jumper is his go to, thats about it for scoring.
his drive to the basket will get swatted due to lack of explosive finishing ability.
0 fast break ability at nba speed.
will get dimes but is severely turnover prone. assist to turnover ratio will be forever poor as his dimes come from super risky passes, borderline greedy passes.
that being said this draft class sucks after towns and okafor so no wonder he’ll go #3.

Bed HeadParticipant"Cool. I’ve always wondered what a scouting report would look like were it written by E.E.Cummings. (After he suffered a massive stroke.)"
Though now, and I really hate to accuse anyone of anything, I’m kinda starting to get the sneaking suspicion that "notsofast" might (just might) be a bit of a troll.

zer0d0ubtBecause anybody who thinks differently must be me.
That’s the same logic that made your head explode when I said Andrew Harrison has SG ability.
And how could he be shooting guard size when he’s a point guard? Must be point guard size.

zer0d0ubtRussell’s fancy one-handed pass with side-spin on it probably moved him up 7 draft spots.
There’s all this talk about his upside, but he’s already maxed out his athleticism, and there’s no way he "practice" his way into being able to stay with starting point guards defensively.
Just like there’s no way he’ll become a good athlete. No matter how much side-spin he puts on his one handed high risk passes.

Rip255I won’t neg ya. He might be right, only time will tell.
This draft class is meh…im not impressed by any of the top 4….I just acknowledge they’re better than the rest, which will probably make little impact next season.
This draft class wouldn’t be described as "better than average" in my opinion.

zer0d0ubtThat’s what ticks me off. When people realize that Russell and Mudiay aren’t all that, they conclude that the draft class as a whole isn’t very good. When really, it’s a great draft with tons of depth right through to the second round, when most drafts are only 18-25 deep with first round talent.

Chariot OrgExactly. People only compared Mudiay to Russell, and Russell to Mudiay. So they just concluded they were both elite because they both compared favorably to the other, and the other was assumed to be elite.

BiggysmallsParticipantHow athletic and explosive is Ginobili? Same with Brandon Roy?
Plenty of good NBA players aren’t elite athletes. Steph Curry without the amazing jump shot is still a good player (albeit not elite).

Sam_Da_Man17Participanti like russel alot especially for the lakers because he can play both off the ball and on the ball…and his pick and roll game can be a big weapon for him…
but i do worry if what adjustments when defenders dont allow him to shot what will he do….i seen him alot on highlights and his game in the tournament i didnt see alot of floaters, drives, or him getting seperation from his defenders like the other guys with no athletism do such as steve nash and curry…he just goes to just jumper a little to much
and who says ginobly doesnt have athleticsm…dude will dunk on you if your caught sleeping

Dog_ShammdogParticipantManu was very athletic in his youth and still is to this day. Russell maxed out at 39" in the vert, but I haven’t seen those hops show up in his game very often and I’m from Columbus and followed him since his jr year of high school. I still think he has a ways to go in his physical maturation process and will hopefully gain more confidence in his physicality and we might see those slithery drives to poster dunks like we do from Manu. His handle is underrated bc he plays so ridiculously relaxed. So relaxed that he downright lacks a sense of urgency at times. It will be sink or swim for him in that department, but with his skill level, iq, work ethic and surprising (and possibly blossoming) athleticism, I would most certainly not bet against him.

zer0d0ubtany proof of Russell’s 39" vert? Because my vert is 89", higher with a running start. It just doesn’t translate to games.

NBAjunkie81ParticipantIn original mock drafts for 2015 Russell was Not even listed in the top 60 – he’s a media creation.. They cherry picked info & Omitted most of the rest,,, Comparing him to Curry or Harden is crazy, there’s Nothing about his game that resembles Either & I can get into specifics if needed… All the "Negs’ you got shows the Power of the ESPN media machine – but people should remember that they don’t Report sports info, they CREATE narratives that draw ratings… Every scout I’ve read & I read a lot of them – had Okafor & Mudiay in the beginning of the year & then Towns moved past Mudiay into the Top 2 w/ Okafor… I think Porzingus is a solid # 4 in that grouping but Russell is a 2nd round talent At Best… Remember whoever the #1 guy is in Football or Basketball gets attacked in the months before the Draft b/c it draws viewers… I Still think All the scouts got it right from day 1 – Okafor w/ that Oak Tree build & his incredible array of Post moves (most NBA big men are lucky if they have ONE post move) is the # 1 pick… Okafor will draw a Double team Every time he touches the ball which will open the floor for shooters & slashers…. Russell is a smaller, right handed version of Evan Turner… your post was 100% correct

T RexGuys with a 39" vert ALWAYS play with more explosion than Russell is showing. I think his agent measured that number while Russell was sitting on the couch.

Memphis MadnessParticipantI am not 100% sold on these two guards either.
I have been thinking that if we trade Marc Gasol to the Knicks for the 4th pick who we should take…
I would look into Willie Cauley-Stein and Mario Hezonjia as much as Russell or Mudiay.
I would rather take Andrew Harrison at 25 (where the Grizzlies pick) or late first/early second round than Mudiay at 3.
Mudiay is a big point guard and so is Andrew Harrison. Other than that, Harrison has some really solid college experience.

GBeeParticipantI’ll attack the post, not the poster. 1 on 1 PG defense is overrated in the NBA especially with this generation’s rules. What’s more important is not sticking to screens, being an aware team defender and being able to deal with switches. Sticking to screens could be a problem for him, but he does see the game very well, he anticipates and he has quick hands. Moving laterally will be a problem but luckily he will have the luxury of playing off and recovering with his length at the PG position. With his size, he’ll be able to deal with switches better than smaller points.
He has more than a pull up in his offensive game. He’s got VERY good PnR potential so he has all the options coming off of that. He can spot up. He’s comfortable coming off of screens and shooting the ball on the move. He has a floater game. He knows how to fake guys out of position, giving him foul drawing potential. He’s got good footwork attacking the paint, good extension with different releases, while also knowing how to freeze help defenders with fakes and look offs.
He’s an exceptional weapon in the open court because he always plays with his head up. The ball moves faster than the player and he’s always looking for the hit ahead pass or trailers. Also, trailer 3’s are just as common as dunks in transition these days. He’s obviously a weapon there. Transition play isn’t just about running up the floor as fast as you can unless you’re looking for a player who can score 1 on 3, which is only something the freaks of the freaks do. What’s more important is quick recognition and precision.
Less than 3 TOs a game with his usage rate was not horrible, certainly not "severe." He does attempt some risky passes but not all of em are. He sprays the ball around well, knows how to manipulate the defense and shift them around. Because of his style of play he will not be as ball-dominant as other points. Whether in a PnR heavy offense or 1 that incorporates more motion, he’ll be able to function because he knows how to use ball screens and he can play on or off the ball, but I could see struggling if he’s in a system where he’s counted on to ISO a lot.

I’ve watched every game of his I could, and he has something that reminded me of the Magics and The Birds – he just sees the game differently, it can’t be taught.
