This guy has been DOMINATING the Summer League...tonight no different
1st game: 25pts,4rebs,4ast
2nd game: 27pts,5rebs,3ast
Tonight: 31pts,4rebs,7ast(With a HUGE dunk through the lane)
This guy is making alot of people look salty for doubting him because he cam from a small school.
He proved he was ready for an up in competition. I'm excited to see what he can do in pre-season and then the regular season.
I love this guy he has the complete package: shooting, ball handling, athleticism, and defensive potential. I hope he develops his PG skills fully and becomes a great player to show all his doubters wrong.
He is going to be very special player. Blazer fans should be very excited.
I don't want to get ahead of myself because I try to refrain from comparisons without seeing them in NBA action but if this guy stays focused and continues to improve, could he be a score threat like Gilbert Arenas pre knee injuries in his prime? Great jumpers, good speed, nice size, neither are tremendous play makers but they will get some assists. I see some comparisons but it's only based on some SL footage I've watched
Wasnt sold on him coming out the draft, but he is making me a believer. Granted he is playing against low level talent, he has shown a great strength in shooting the ball. The league has alot of dynamic young pgs but very few of them are great shooters. I think he will be one of the better shooting young pgs in the game.
I liked Lillard much more then Waiters. #1 point is work ethic. You can tell Lillard has the drive and tools to be great...or atleast consistantly above average at the NBA level. Waiters showed up to summer league out of shape and wasn't injured. Its hard to improve when your not in peak form. It shows a lack of true dedication to your craft.
A player who dominates D1 is probably going to dominate summer league. The real season is a totally different story.
Not always true, Derrick Rose didn't dominate SL
That jam he had over Benson was insane...it looked like something Derrick Rose or Westbrook would pull off. He isn't quite as athletic as those two guys but I really like the comparison of Jay Williams coming out of Duke.
is my darkhorse pick for ROY(i said this before, him and Barnes also) I think he can have 16,6,4 season beacuse he will have alot of freedom since day 1..
I think its going to be difficult for Lillard to earn ROY since he isn't the number one option. He might not even be the 2nd option with Batum there.
How do you think he would have done beside Irving in Cle? I have been very high on Lillard from the start and would rathered the Cavs "reach" for Lillard instead of Waiters. Lillard would need the ball in his hands to be effective, but so does Waiters.
@OldSkoolBasketball and what other rookie is going to be the 1st offensive option for his team? Mkg? lol
Lillard is clearly the most polished offensive rookie of this draft class
With no other decent PG in Portland he's going to get a lot of minutes and run the PnR with Aldridge a lot and with Batum and Matthews spreading the floor he's going to put up great numbers. Baring a suprise trade or signing I think he should be the big favourite for ROY. He's the most skilled offensive player in the draft and is probably going to have the keys from day one.
Jeremy Lamb looks like he could be the man or the second option. The guy I can tell isn't even going hard.
How is Lamb going to be the first or second option with Lin,Martin there as well as the SF who is on their summer team?
Lilliard is doing everything right. This guy has all the tools, the perfect attitude and work ethic. Very under-rated passer. Can't think of one thing I don't like. Going to be special. If he stays healthy, ROY and playoffs are both very possible. I like to stick my neck out a little, so here goes. If draft were reset today he goes #2. He will have a Wade-like rise to stardom. (Different game, but will be that guy who went from intriging high-level prospect to polished star in 1 year.) I can't think of more than 5pg I would rather have.
Summer League isn't even over and you're already redoing the draft AND classifying Lillard among elite point guards before he even steps on the same court as them? Slow down man premature hype has a way of backfiring on a lot of people.
Rose Westbrook Paul Williams and Irving..there is 5 I would rather have. I like Lillard but let's at least wait til the all-star break before we talk about re-drafting. You can tell he is a nice player but tearing up the summer league isn't evidence that a star has been born.
Well I meant when he gets his chance down the road.
is one hell of a scorrer blazers fans should be excited for thier newest player damian lillard he could make an impact in the league right away
He is a shoot first PG, not bad at all but it would be nice to see more top young pass first PG's like John Wall and Tony Wroten.
john wall is more of a passer because he cant score more... so lets just call him a pass first PG.
if he could drop 25 a night, he would do it.
i dont want to get my expectations too much for Lilard, but what he's shown has been very good compared to other rookies and sophomores. honestly, there might be a handfull of players ive watched and i tell to myself, "This is a legit NBA player among D-Leaguers." not to say all D-League players are bad, but rather, the majority is clearly on a level less than NBA guys. and Lilard has shown that he is very much NBA ready right now.
if Damian Lilard has a season that equals Damon Stoudamires in his first year as a Blazer, i'd be very happy already. dont want to put up too much pressure and expectation from the kid.
I don't pay too much attention to stats during summer league, but it's clear to see Lillard is going to be a very good pro.
First off, he's great in the pick and roll. Him and Lamarcus Aldridge (even JJ Hickson) in the pick and roll should be nice. His passing sort of reminds me of Derrick Rose. He's not a great passer, but he's a good passer and will make the right pass.
I also like the fact that he can play off of the ball and he can shoot it. His FG% is low, but he's shooting stroke looks solid from deep.
And this kid, while not an elite level athlete, clearly has enough speed/quickness to get to the rim. He plays at different speeds. I've noticed that he doesn't waste much time playing around with the ball... It's one or two moves and boom... He's attacking the basket. He has the strength to finish through contact too.
A lot to like here.
Lillard has looked spectacular in summer league action so far the pick n roll with him and Aldridge will be lethal next year
i absolutelly agree than he impressed and i actually think he deservers an MVP throphy in this SL..
but one thing bothers me the guy selected in the lottery 4yrs ago by the same team with a very similar skills and athletic tools Jerryd Bayless dominated it too and if im not wrong he was named MVP that year..
offcourse you can't compare guys just because of this similarities but that just shows SL is not everything especially when you was great in college and competition there isn't that much better bigger stronger..NBA is a different animal
Yea, you're right... That's a good point to make. Bayless dominated, even more so than Lillard.
I think the big difference between the two is going to be opportunity though. Bayless just didn't get his opportunity, where Lillard should be given an opportunity right away. IF you look at the Blazers roster as of right now, he's the only point guard on it.
I see some of Bayless in him, but I like him better at the defensive end due to his length. He's more patient in the pick and roll too (a more willing passer). Seems to be a more natural deep range jumpshooter.
Lillard is going to be a good player... I mean, at least a solid starter.
That's actually a very good point(Bayless). IMO Lillard is a better shooter with more range and more of a pg though. Bayless never has shown to be a pg but more of a undersized sg who could score. In any case you made a great point as far as people shouldn't get expectations too high
