I was looking at the Mav’s salary cap and I saw that they have 26.5 million on the books next year, granted it’s without some key pieces (Dirk, Vince, Marion and Blair) but if they can all sign deals that is low enough for the Mav’s to go and get Carmelo then I think Melo needs to take the deal if he wants to win a title or be in the hunt. Dallas is a perfect fit with a great owner who will pay whatever it takes to win a title and they already have a veteran team around him if Melo does go to Dallas. Dallas is also a big enough city to where Melo will still see the spotlight and make his brand bigger. I think if he does go their that they would be a top 3 team next year.

Jose Calderon Devin Harris Shane Larkin

Monte Ellis Vince Carter Ricardo Ledo

    Carmelo Anthony Shawn Marion

    Dirk Brandon Wright

    Sam Dalembert Dajuan Blair

thats a deep 12 man team in the Spurs mode and with more offensive power then a lot of teams in the NBA, they would have to defend but Rick Carlise is a top 5 coach in the NBA he would figure out how to make it work and make sure that the vets don’t play too much in the regular season.

That’d be a fun team to watch.  I think they are an under the radar team, but I’m not sure if Dallas is a place Melo would want to be.  It’s a pretty big market, but it does not have the flash that Carmelo wanted in NY.  Also, this would be a pretty short term look for Melo.  The Mavs don’t have a lot of young talent, in a few years Dirk, Vince, and Marion will be gone.  Also, Calderon is getting older and will be slowed down.  He would have to be very confident that Monta Ellis can repeat the kind of year he had this year consistently.

Dallas are sure to make a pitch for a lot of the top FA’s. I’d assume that Dirk will likely resign with them for something between $12 and $15 million a year or he may take a bit less if he really wanted to try and get a top running mate. Melo would certainly be on their radar and Dallas is a big market but would Melo consider playing with a soon to be 36 year old Dirk and 32 year old Calderon as his best chance to win a title I do wonder when you think the money he’d have to leave on the table in NY.

I’m sure that Mark Cuban and co will do a great job selling Dallas to to FAs but maybe not Melo. Also I wonder if Melo came on board would Monta Ellis almost be a luxury as he’d get far less shots and scoring is his main strength.

1st, anyone in Dallas that really wants to see Vince Carter and Shawn Marion in a Mavs uniform really grew up in Houston…In the wise words of James Franco in This Is The End "They gots, to go!"

2nd, a lineup that contains Calderon, Melo and Dirk is going to struggle defending their man, Dalembert is not Dwight Howard protecting the paint so I think something would have to be done on that front…

3rd, Blair should be allowed to find another team, Brandon Wright deserves to become a bigger contributor and Blair just eats up Cap Space and a Minutes that could go towards Melo and a defender…

4th, as always the Team targeting a player like Melo has to have more in place than an aging star and underwhelming 2nd banana (Dirk and Monta or Kobe and a resigned Gasol)

I really think Dirk’s going to take a small contract, maybe even under 10 mil. Didn’t he opt out his last contract to sign a smaller one to give the Mavs some flexibility? I can’t remember if he actually do, I just faintly remember some story like that. If it’s true, I can see him taking an even bigger pay cut this time around. Dirk’s a class act like that and he loves his team/franchise.

The money issue doesn’t apply to teams who play in Florida or Texas Dwight signed the max in Houston for 30 mill less and still comes out 2 million ahead due to no state income tax, Dallas would be a fine choice. What superstar doesn’t want to play for Cuban? Widely passionate, will defend you, and look how well he’s taking care of Dirk. Plus Rick Carlisle is an excellent coach you couldn’t get me out of New York fast enough.

I thought about this before. Looking at the places that have money that is probably the best landing spot for Melo. Dallas could be a really good team, especially with Dirk as a 2nd option. I think Dallas has a lot of flexibility though because they would be signing their own free agents. So technically I believe they could sign whoever they wanted until their space is gone and then re-sign all of their own guys. Vince said he wanted to come back. I would say Marion would come back too if he still wants to play then Dirk wants to come back another couple of years. If Dallas could keep their team intact, add Carmelo and upgrade their center position then I think they would be legit contenders. The hardest part is going to be landing Melo.

The best fit basketball wise for Melo is still the Bulls.  Whether they can conjure up the cap space to make an attractive offer for him is another question.

I think a lot of people may be adverse to having Melo and Monta, both infamously ball stoppers in the past, on the same team, but I think that Rick Carlisle could do big things with this team, should Melo choose Dallas. Look at the magic he worked with Ellis, he went from an innefficient chucker to one of the better combo guards in the league, scoring 19 a game on 45% from the field, up from the 41% from the season before. Monta did shoot over 44% for 6 6 of his 8 seasons prior to this one, but he never really was known as a team player. On the Mavs, Carlisle has gotten this guy to buy in and great results of come. I think that he could really get the best out of Melo. Him, Dirk and Monta would be one of the best scoring trios in the league, all of them can stretch the floor, go inside some, hit the mid range jumper. The only issue would be defence, but I think Melo gets a worse rap then he should on that side of the ball, he isnt anything special but he is an average defender, and with a plethora of solid big men this free agency like Emeka Okafor, Jordan Hill, Birdman Anderson, they can cover up some of the deficiencies that Melo and Dirk might have on that end. They can always get the Matrix Shawn Marion back on a cheaper contract as well to lock down the perimeter and guys like Dejaun Blair and Sam Dalembert arent necessarily not coming back.
