In a cap relief move, the Phoenix Suns traded Kurt Thomas, a 1st and 2nd round pick, to the Seattle Supersonics for a second round pick. This just doesn’t make sense to me…Why would you give up a first for a second? I get that they wanted to save money but they could have traded his contract for somebody they could have waived. I just don’t know why they decided to give up so much just to get cap space. Still blows my mind today

In hindsight it was a terrible trade but not when it happened…Roy was an injured wing man that had medical red flaggs coming into the draft…The Wolves did mess up with the trade but not when it happened…People were really high on Foye coming out…It seemed like a smart move at the time….

This trade was “the beginning of thje end” for the New York Knick.

In the 2002 NBA Draft, with players like Amare Stoudemire and Caron Butler still on the board. With the 7th pick in darft, the Knicks chose Nene. After that, they traded Nene, Marcus Camby, and Mark Jackson to Denver for Antonio McDyess and the No. 25 pick in the first round: Frank Williams. The Knicks could have had a pretty solid power forward/center combination for the future with Nene and Camby, but instead they sold their future (and franchise winning) to save a couple dollars.

This was one of the craziest and worst trades ever.

On June 28, 2007, the Sonics traded Ray Allen and Glen Davis, the 35th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, to the Celtics in exchange for Delonte West, Wally Szczerbiak, and the fifth overall pick, Jeff Green.

On July 31, 2007, Kevin Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, cash considerations, Boston’s 2009 first-round draft pick (top 3 protected) and the 2009 first-round pick Minnesota had traded to Boston in the Ricky Davis-Wally Szczerbiak trade of 2006.

Those two trades got Boston a championship and 2 finals appearances.

    wikipedia is my friend.

The Marion for Shaq trade might not be the worst, but it is the dumbest trade in NBA history. Suns fixed things up pretty quick but they got lucky that it didn’t ruin their franchise.

The Pau Gasol trade wasn’t as bad as people said it was. Memphis got Marc Gasol, lots of cap room, and two first round draft picks.

In 1999, Phoenix traded Steve Nash and a future 1st for Pat Garrity. Nash then began to dominate at the PG level re-signed with the Suns and won 2 MVP’s that has to be the wierdest trade ever.

    2008:
Sacramento Kings trade Mike Bibby to the Atlanta Hawks for Tyronn Lue, Anthony Johnson, Shelden Williams, Lorenzen Wright and a 2nd round draft pick

Granted, Bibby hasn’t done too well in Atlanta. But Lue, Johnson, Williams, and Wright did absolutely nothing in Sacramento. Bibby could at least have provided some veteran leadership for the Kings.

That 5 team trade that sent Antoine Walker, Jason Williams, and Posey to the Heat was CRAZY. (http://www.nba.com/heat/news/heat_acquire_walkerwilliamsposey_050803.html)

There was so much going on in that one. and it got them a title.

    Rudy Gay for Shane Battier.

At the time didn’t make sense to me. You wanted a older vet instead of the player who had Scottie Pippen type potential? Alright…

    Elton Brand for Tyson Chandler

Didn’t make any sense to me. I didn’t understand why this deal was even discussed.

    Dirk for Tractor Traylor

Come on…the man nickname was “Tractor” You knew he wasn’t going far in the NBA….

jeff416 – thank you for saying that about the pau trade

i was just about to say Rudy Gay for Shane Battier

Darko for Q-Rich then Q-Rich for Zack Randolf (turned out to be an All Star)

a dark spot in franchise history is when we made the trade for Otis Thorpe. We sent detriot a future first round pick and that pick ended up being #2 in the 2003 draft arguably the best draft off all time (LeBron, Carmelo, D-Wade, Bosh, ect.)

Given, its 2 stars being traded for one another, but man it just came out of nowhere, the pistons traded a true PG in Billups who is still going strong and still a top 10 PG in the league who was there finals MVP, for an aging ball hog in Iverson who had already lost a step since his prime days in the early decade, the trade didnt make sense then and obviously it worked out much better for the nuggets.

Mine was 05 Celtics trade Mike Stewart(bum), Tom Gugiliata(bum), old washed up Gary Payton to the Hawks for Antione Walker(before becoming a bum), and then for cap space, the Hawks bought out Payton and the Celtics resigned him.

    Compare these two starting lineups

    05 3 seed 10 4 seed

    Payton Rondo
    Pierce Allen
    Walker Pierce
    LaFrentz Garnett
    Blount Perk

    The whole situation was crazy
