Countdown to the NCAA Season: JNixon-Iggy9's Top 35 Teams (#22)

#22: BYU Cougars

Frontcourt: This group loses it's fiery leader in Jonathan Tavernari, who plays overseas now. He was a nice shooter and he was competitive and the vocal leader of BYU. He'll be tough to replace by next year because of his ability to stretch, but Noah Hartsock and the physically gifted Soph Brandon Davies should at trump Tavernari's scoring and boarding totals. Hartsock is an athletically limited 6'8 220 PF who can score a little on basic catch and finish plays if the guards draw defenders away from him, and he's a solid rebounder. Brandon Davies has strong physical tools and a nice upside, but he's not very athletic and his mid-range game will have to improve even though he flashed it last season. Even though he's mediocre on the glass, he should increase from 3 rpg to around 6 next year. If developed right, Davies could be one of the better PF's in the Mountain West next year. He certainly has the potential to. Charles Abouo, a 6'5 swingman, is a decent shooter who could also see time off the bench. He should contribute about 6 or 7 ppg next year too. This group loses it's leader, but I think Hartsock and especially Davies should trump Tavernari's totals. This has the makings of a group that could be even stronger next year.

Backcourt: Jimmer Freddette is a beast, FTW!, and damn what you heard. He's a 6'2 195 combo guard who has a sweet jump shot from mid-range and deep, cat-like body control, great agility, and he's strong. While he's not a pure PG, he's not exactly a guy that'll have much trouble playing strictly the PG spot, and he averaged 4.7 apg and 2.7 to's, very nice caretaking for a guy who had the ball as much as he did. Freddette looks very good in the pick and roll, so he's capable of playing strictly PG as far as I'm concerned. He's not a great leaper, but he is so crafty around the rim and so smart that he can shield the ball and use the right type of english to make tough and contested shots against more athletic bigs. Freddette still produces at a scary level, and sometimes he has entire defenses drawn up to stop him. He's my bet to lead the NCAA in scoring next year while raising his assist totals, and I think he'll rise steadily next year up draft boards to the mid-1st round or even late lotto. He honestly reminds me of a mix of Stephen Curry and Mike Bibby. Don't sleep on Jimmy Jim man. He's a tantalizing player. They lose Mike Loyd Jr., an athletic and quick 6'0 guy that had nice shooting skills and played nice on-ball D. They still have the shooters Jackson Emery and Tyler Haws though. Emery's shot is extremely cash (43% from deep), especially when open and he's great at finding spots in transition to spot up at, and can get shots off on the move. Haws is more of a mid-range player than Emery, but he's not slouch from deep either (37%). Neither guy is athletic or very strong on D, but they provide high-level shooting and they benefit from the pressure Freddette puts on the D. Jimmer Freddette makes this guard group the truth, but Haws and Emery's shooting ability are also big weapons and they should get a little better next year too (more so Haws).

Overview: Jimmer Freddette is a beast, a dog, an a motherloving problem...He should be a 1st team All-American next year, my bet to lead the NCAA in scoring, and just the type of lethal player you love to have. Him, along with the great offensive role-players they have and the (predicted) emergence of Brandon Davies should make BYU a Sweet 16 or even Elite 8 team next year. I think they have the ability to knock out an elite team if they play them head-to-head too.

Tyler Haws

Tyler Haws is not playing for BYU for the next two years. He went on a mormon mission. He is replaced by freshman Kyle Collinsworth who has a very similar skill set however.

Yeah wasnt tryin to get on

Yeah wasnt tryin to get on your case Jnix...it's all good. BYU should have an amazing season. They also got a juco transfer out of arizona that supposedly plays a lot like tavernari at sf. Not necessarily with the same energy or passion but the same shooting touch at least. Good report yall

Jimmer Freddette is a bit

Jimmer Freddette is a bit overrated..If you wanna know how he might be in the pros? YouTube former Chicago Bulls guard John Paxson..Thats who Fredette plays like...He's going to be a late 1st round pick..Maybe higher if he have a good workout with a team..
He'll be best playing along side multi-talented guards like Kobe,Wade,Rose,D-Will or Brandon Roy..
