I’m not a fan of big changes, and I’m sure I’m not the first one to propose this.

College basketball should use at least FIBA rules. There’s absolutely no excuse for not using them. What a better way to improve the NCAA as a basketball farm for the entire world.

24-second clocks, the 3pt line a little farther, it all makes sense. I strongly believe the 1+1 free throw rule doesn’t have any benefit at all. Yes, it implies a big change, probably the teams with a fast pace would perform better in the short time, but a few years from now we would have better players available for the NBA and other leagues.

I’d really like to read opinions supporting the current college rules.

was one of the ugliest seasons offensively in a long time. Many people were talking about changes that could/need to be made all year.

As a B10 fan, I loved it! I like watching tough defenses destroying other teams, but I can at least understand why some fans wouldn’t like it (specifically the casual fan). I do not want to see the NCAA turn into a mini NBA where good offense is rewarded, bad offense is bailed out and good defense is punished.

I honestly think the NBA is more like WWE wrestling with the way they call it now. All about entertainment, not the integrity of the game.

I say quicker shot clock, longer 3 pt line and wider charge area in the paint are all they need to change.

Eh I think there’s a middle ground between how the college game and NBA should be played.

I think the college has become to physical, basically you’d be dumb not play physical and try to get away with fouls because the refs have shown they’re hesitant to call fouls so if it isn’t going to be called why not do it? Look at UofL when they one a title and how they still play, they just play as physical as they can and foul as much as they can to get an advantage until the refs do something, and when you’ve got the athletes out there like that it’s smart strategy even if  not a fan.

Also I think a lot of it is how basketball development has changed in America. So much emphasis on being a great athlete and looking like a NBA player physically and the fundamentals and skills become secondary because when you’re the better athlete in the HS level it’s easy to dominate. AAU basketball is for the most part, terrible, and steers a lot of kids in the wrong direction and mindset. The media has changed the outlook on things, when you’ve got Skip and other talking heads saying blah blah blah be Michael Jordan and be a superstar who’s super aggressive, take the shot, clutch gene blah blah blah. Basketball is still a team sport and the best teams work together, ultalize their teammates to make the team and themselves player, but it’s become and mindset that one guy has to do ISO ball or high pick and roll. While over in Europe they may not be the freak athletes, but they’re skilled and understand ball movement and spacing

I wouldn’t mind some changes but I like the 1+1 free throw rule. It gives a team that is trying to come back a better chance when intentionally fouling at the end of the game…as long as they have not reached 10 team fouls for the half. It rarely makes much of a difference but I would imagine if you look back in the last 20 years of the tourney a bunch of those buzzer beaters would have never happened if somebody didn’t miss the front end of a 1 and 1.

Completely agree about changing the shot clock and adjusting the 3pt line. Where I disagree with the OP is on the one-and-one FT changes…. I actually like the X-factor quality that they bring. It also rewards teams who have had discipline to not foul all quarter. Wouldn’t be oppose to the pros picking this up.

Didn’t college basketball already adopt the 30 second shot clock for next season as well as one fewer timeout per half?

I am definitely a fan of both of these changes. There are way too many stoppages of play in the college game right now. I would also be a fan of moving the 3 pt line back about a foot and making the foul out rule 6 instead of 5. I hate it when a star player picks up his second foul 2 mins into a game and the coach automatically sits him for the rest of the half.

I don’t have any problems with the physicality of games. Actually I like structured defenses, but I wish the rules resembled more NBA or FIBA games. I don’t think there’s any good reason not to do so. College players will be more prepared for the pros.

I totally support this idea. But, can the NCAA officially agree on ONE BALL, instead of every school using a ball of their choice. It is so ridicolous and ludacris that you have this institution that doesnt have a official ball that must be used.

They should choose a brand, doesnt really matter who or how they choose it as long as it can become a NCAA universal ball. As a former NCAA player i hated that we used Wilson and then we go to Indiana and they use Adidas or Iowa uses Nike… I think many would agree on this as well

it would be a drastic change to switch right to a 24 second shot clock and pushing the 3pt line to nba range for CBB.. i like the changes they made.. its gnna speed the game up as most fans want.. i forgot who said it but i heard i think jay wright say that he wants to see the NCAA have the same rules and measurements as the nba in the future.. these college kids arent as skilled or as athletic as guys in the nba so i would imagine some team like louisville pressing some mid-major team with a 24 second shot clock.. that would spell trouble for a lot of teams but like the OP said there needs to be a middle ground and i think its on its way to being that

16 year old kids in Europe play with FIBA rules… Why can’t athletic american players do it? I just can’t see it.

Most of these kids will play either in the NBA or in overseas after their career. Why not give them all the tools to learn the pro game ? I never got the point of having different rules.

People complaining about the pace of play annoy the heck out of me.

I like the idea of changing the clock to 30 seconds and want to say I saw a  stat from either the NIT or another tourney where they did change it.

Possessions were up like 3.7 and points were up 3.5

Thats less than a point per possession. The problem in college basketball isnt the rules, its kids who aren’t skilled.

Get rid of that stupid semi circle. It’s a terrible rule that brings little value.

all it does is encourage more players to drive recklessly into the lane completely out of control and get bailed out by the officials.

The lane should stay narrow. Baksetball was designed for big men, stop with this affirmative action for short people rule changes.

I am fine with a shorter shot clock though.

They should just go to the NBA 3pt line. Would make it easy for scouts and teams drafting.

I think the 30 second shot cook is a good first step. What’s great, and what’s challenging about the NCAA is that you have blue chip elite programs like Kentucky, and you have tiny schools with far less talent.

I don’t think a complete overhaul is necessary, but a 35 shot clock is pretty ridicuous. It’s going to be a slow process to improve the college game, but I think a 30 second shot clock is a good place to start. It won’t hurt really any team, and it will speed up the game.

When push comes to shove the NBA is just such a higher level of basketball, that your tried and true NBA fans that find the college game boring, or too slow, just need to realize that it is this way due to talent leaving for the pros before players can develop enough to play at the high level of college basketball we saw in the early to mid 1990s with Duke, UNLV, Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina, Kentucky, Michigan and some other historically elite programs. Even top players like Larry Johnson, Shaq, Christian Laettener, Chris Webber and others playing 2 or 3 years improved the play, but also persuaded key role players and likely pros to come back for another year to give it another go.

The NCAA is such a money machine, that I don’t feel like requiring young guys to play 2 or 3 years in college is right, unless they get some sort of compensation ( my idea has always been allowing them individual endorsement, whether it’s a 5 star grabbing a Nike deal, or a 2 star at Indiana State grabbing a local sporting goods store commercial spot or two for a couple grand ). Still, I feel the days of truly elite college basketball may be in the past, but I still enjoy the games. For the most part these kids play with tremedous heart, you get to see future pros at a developmental level, and the tradition of each school and the tournament are unlike anything in any sport.

Wow, that was tangential, 30 second shot clock, let the kids get endorsements…a regular college student can get a summer job, Olympic amateaur athletes can get sponsorships, cap it if you must, but I think this is the best solution to compensating players. That in itself may make the decision to stay another year to develop a little easier, and in turn improve the caliber of play.
