What does everyone think of this trade?

James Young, Gerald Wallace or Tayshaun Prince trade exception, and the 28th and 33rd picks for Lance Stephenson and the 9th overall pick?

For the Hornets, they rid themselves of Lance Stephenson, something they have been looking to do for a while. They add a young, high upside shooter in James Young (better than any SG that will be available at this pick IMO.) Plus they can add some nice pieces with the late first and early second round pick they acquire.

For the Celtics, this is an opportunity to add a lot of value. I know people consider Lance Stephenson a cancer, but he is a talented player who could greatly benefit from a change in scenery. The real value from this trade would come in the form of the number 9 pick. The Celtics could add a big like Myles Turner (or Porzingis/WCS if they fall) at 9 and a player like Oubre, Lyles, or Dekker at 16.

    Thoughts?

Nice idea. A lot of Celtic fans have been targeting Stephenson as a buy-low candidate.

The problem is that I think Smart plays the same position and the same way. They are both tough-nosed defenders with an ability to shoot and pass. I think Smart’s driving will come around next year too.

Stepheson has some ability to slide over to small forward, and Smart is a bit small for that.

It would be interesting to start Stephenson and Smart in the backcourt and bring Thomas off the bench as a change of pace guy.

In the end, because Stephenson duplicates many of Smart’s strengths, I think the benefits do not outweigh the risks.

There is another post that has a Boston and Indiana trade idea.  So maybe combining this trade with the other may make sense with some slight adjustments.  Something like Stephenson and the 9th to Pacers (selecting WCS), Hibbert to Celtics and 11th to Hornets (selecting Booker), Wallace and 28th to Hornets (selecting Rozier).

Indiana gets Lance and Trill Will for Hibbert and Booker.

Boston gets Hibbert for Wallace and Rozier

Charlotte gets Wallace, Booker and Rozier for Stephenson and Trill WIll

    Where do I begin…

As much as Lance has been off his game since arriving in Charlotte, I don’t see why the Hornets would basically gift wrap a top 10 pick to get rid of him, especially when one of the three players you mentioned is well past his prime and can barely give you 15 minutes a night off the bench anymore, and the other is in Detroit. Also, James Young spent way too much time in the D-League last year to consider him a fair trade for No. 9.

And if worse comes to worst, the Hornets can let Lance walk at the end of this next year anyways. The third year of his deal is a team option.

As great as bringing Crash back to Charlotte might be for sentimental reasons, his salary is larger than Stephenson’s, and (as previously mentioned) he won’t add anything on the court.

If I’m Rich Cho, I either hang up the phone on Danny Ainge immediately or counter with something along the lines of James Young, Jae Crowder and No. 16 for Lance and No. 9.

I think the hornets would need more in this deal. I know they want to get rid of Stephenson but I doubt they would be willing to give up a lottery pick just to do it.

So basically swapping bad contracts and trading James Young for the 9th pick?

If Charlotte wanted to salary dump Stephenson they would’ve done so by now. His contract is basically an expiring at this point because the third year wasnt guarenteed.

You forgot the Celtics also giving up 28 and 33 in a deep draft.

Charlotte wouldn’t do that trade.  Stephenson’s contract has a team option in the last year.  They might as well bite the bullet and pay him next season and decline his option the following offseason.  Boston would be getting Stephenson who while he had a horrendous season last year could bounce back.  As well as a top 10 pick just for taking on his contract.  All while only giving up James Young and picks 28 and 33.

A lot of different ideas there but it could work.

G Wallace was a big star there, him sitting on the bench for a season would probably be betetr for their fans than Lance doing that.  Wallace can still defend, so he would get playing time.  The Hornets remove what was a problem at times for them and for their draft pick get a young swingman who some say would have gone higher if he stayed in college for another year.  So that does put him in the range of the Hornet’s pick this draft.

What the Hornets need is outside shooting, and J Young was at 44% in the D-League, where he averaged 21.5 points a game.

For Boston, the Wallace and Stephenson swap helps in a few ways but they would just see him as someone staying for the year, or less.  His percentages have fallen away and his attitutde may not have been great to begin with.  Getting the higher pick, that is what Boston wants.

It is all about James Young here, do the Hornets think they are stealing a young scorer with range in his shot, and do the Celtics think that the potential of young as their future starting shooting guard isn’t as important as the high draft pick now?
