Willfb3ParticipantWhat do fans think of the Nets trading Brook Lopez for their 2017 pick back? The Celtics would be dangerous with a Thomas, Bradley, Crowder, Horford, Lopez staring five, and the Nets could start to rebuild. The Celtics would still have Brooklyn’s 2018 pick which will be high, and they would be a top team in the East this season.

For_Never_EverParticipantI think Celtics should stay on course compete and rebuild. Draft the most talented player with the most potential regardless of position. The Celtics are in every single trade talk for every single player it seems. For me personally it’s annoying because most of the talk it isn’t worth it. Brook Lopez is nasty offensively, but I wouldn’t trade for him with his foot injuries history.

CameronCrazy11ParticipantBarring a team offering a bonafide perennial All Star player for any of those Brooklyn picks (i.e. Russell Westbrook), I think Boston should continue to play the waiting game. They just drafted Jaylen Brown and should get another young guy with All Star potential in the 2017 draft (possibly even the 1st overall pick). They aren’t built for a title run yet but could have a great roster within the next few seasons when all of these young guys start to hit their stride. Mix that young talent in with veterans and future FA signings, and you’ve got one of the best teams in the league. Plus they basically have Brooklyn in no man’s land for the next five years or so when it comes to bringing in a top draft pick. I don’t see why they would want to help out a division rival to rebuild more quickly than they need to.

OhCanada-ParticipantCeltics still wouldn’t advance and win the East. They would still have huge matchup problems with Cleveland, Toronto, Indiana, Detroit, Chicago and Washington. In the regular season you get more days off and a weaker schedule. In the postseason night after night it’s alot harder. Wouldn’t trade a Top 5 pick for an injury prone big who struggles rebounding and defending.

The GoatParticipantJust wondering, cos I’m too lazy to Google the transactions, how did the Nets avoid the Stepian rule and trade consecutive picks?

OhCanada-ParticipantThey traded the rights to the stronger pick out of Boston’s 2017-Brooklyns-2017. The Celtics will obtain the higher pickout of the two yet the Nets are still left with the mandatory pick.

BiggysmallsParticipantBoston is going to be a 3-5 seed in the East. I think they’d be perfectly okay with just adding another top-5 talent to the mix.
Only way I’m moving one of those Brooklyn picks is if I’m getting a player who moves the needle from "good team" to "contender with Cleveland"…not a lot of guys out there that Boston could conceivably make a move for.
So might as well just keep adding super young talent…nothing wrong with hitting a true contending window in like three years and having it stay open for 6-8 years after that.

HitsterParticipantAinge can play a waiting game – see where the pick falls so he doesn’t miss out on a potential superstar. e.g. This year if pick fell 1 or 2 they definitely draft if it fell 3 or lower then maybe listen to what deals are out there or take drafted asset into FA season for a possible move.
Everyone talks about win now but an already successful team adding younger stars from a false draft position gives the Celtics a longer contending window and allows top FAs to carry the team now but ride shotgun in later years – the potential Wiggins and LBJ scenario if K-Love trade hadn’t happened.
