They are going nowhere without sorting the defense out. They lacked a legit big in Miami, but James, Wade and Bosh still got after it defensively and had guys like Birdman, Chalmers and Battier who solid defensive options.

Cleveland has Irving and Love who are not known for defensive intensity and not showing me anything to change my opinion on that. Thompson is way too undersized, Marion is slowing down, Waiters wants to score etc.

If Cleveland are truly wanting to compete they need some strong defensive players and they will need to start looking to trade Waiters and Thompson.

I think rim protection is the first priority, as Irving and Love will still see a lot of minutes and I don’t see them being the kind of defensive player Wade and Bosh were. So that ability to protect around the rim on penetration will help.

I don’t know who the options are out there, I was thinking Mahinmi from Indiana, but he is injured. A guy like Biyombo from Charlotte who per 48mins is averaging 4.2blks (Would have learn not too foul so much). There are limited options and Cleveland will likely have to take back something undesirable, but it could be worth it.

I agree with you 100%. The Cavs need rim protection in the worst way.

You won’t see it in his block numbers, but Mahinmi is a very good rim protector. Opponents shoot only 44% against him at the rim (opponents shooting 52% vs Biyombo). He’s a great communicator and plays with a high motor. He’s just a very good overall defender. I think he’d be an excellent fit for the Cavs.

Yes, he’s currently injured with a torn plantar fascia, but he’s already been out close to a month. He should return in another 2-4 weeks.

What would the Cavs give up for Mahinmi in a potential trade?

I keep thinking Stuckey + Mahinmi for Waiters/Thompson + Lottery protected pick.

Mahinmi comes in as a defensive C they need, Stuckey gives what Waiters does now and more willing to take on a depleted role as 6th man than Waiters.

Indiana get a young scorer who could be a nice 17/18ppg guy to put next to Paul George or a replacement for West potentially.A pick to get that youth at PF if we Waiters was the option or a young scorer in the case of Thompson.

As I stated above, Cleveland may have to do something that they may not want to, but whatever team they contact will hold the cards to a point and there are not a lot of options.

I really like your idea, i thnk it would benefit both teams.

I like Thompson as he seems to be the only Cav who seems interested in playing but they need a larger PF/C. West could also teach him to refine he post/face-up and fill the role once his time is done. The only problem is Waiter’s very questionable shot selection at times, he really wants to score. Moving him to Indy will hopefully mature him.

He played great defense against D Wade the second half of the game on Christmas.  The beginning of the year he was shooting 40% for 3 on catch and shoot shots…  But sometimes he’s aloof on defense and he doesn’t fancy himself as an off the ball player.  It’s like he refuses to accept a role that IMO he will thrive in…

The rest of the Cavs issues stem from lack of a defensive minded coach.  This is partially LeBron’s fault.   He left Miami and he understands how defense is needed in order to win games/championships. Why in the hell Kyrie, Love, and the rest of the Cavs unaware of this?  You right, it seems like they’re not interested at all…

On paper, Kyrie and Love are better suited to play along side LeBron than Bosh and D Wade.  I really went into this season thinking they would spread the floor and put LeBron in the post…  Then he went and lost that weight.  Refuses to go back in the post where he had the most success…  Now he rather start from behind the 3pt line AGAIN in his career which forces his superstar teammates into role players.  What’s the point of paying Love all that money when you could just get Ryan Anderson to do the same things the Cavs want him to do offensively?

I do agree they need a shot blocker, but it’ll probably come next year..  I think Philly’s Noel could potentially be up for grabs if the Sixers select another big man in this upcoming draft.  Packaging Waiters, Thompson, and a pick could possibly get that for the Cavs.

I’m beginning to dislike Lebron more and more after that overpublicized move back to Cleveland. First of all, he makes people think he is doing this all for Ohio, which he partly is and sells it hard that the Cavs aren’t ready yet to make a big run to the finals. But cmon, you’ve got 3 of the top 20 players in the L it’s not like he’s sacrificing moving from championship team to cellar dweller. He did that for his image.

Also, media always sucks his D after every Cleveland loss. Rporters ask him what went wrong and why they aren’t winning as much games as they should. He says the team as to get better at defense and do this and do that. From what I see in games, he’s as lazy a defender as Harden last season. Maybe worse. I’m not exaggerating here. He’s putting ZERO effort on D. Loses his man often on cuts, let’s people dive by at ease on him. I don’t know what happened because he was a beast defensively on Miami.

You see Kyrie putting great effort on D and he still is the one who gets criticized the most for not playing it. Lebron should walk his talk. Even in offense it seems like he is in ‘chill’ mode too often. He only turns up his defense in the 4th quarter. You see all these GIFS of Melo and Harden having a brain fart on defense but I bet Lebron has a lot more of those, people just don’t post them.

This is becoming sickening. I agree with Roxas. LEbro constantly  throws this team under  the bus like he is just playing great and no one else is. This season has shown who he really  is. He is not playing d like he is capable, whines and pouts  on the court and turns the ball over like crazy, 7 against  Detroit.

Yet the media and some fans will defend him and blame it on Irving, waiters, love l, and the coach. LeBron  is not who the medit makes him out to be, he is great  but not as great as they say. Truth of the matter is with  out Bosh and wade, he still would be ringless. He lied when he said he expected  it to be a process, he didn’t  believe  that. He figured  he they got love then they can win it all this year and that’s why he forced the Cavs to make that trade. But in doing that you killed your depth and athleticism.

The cavs got rid of Zeller, jack, wiggins, and Bennett th is off season and replaced them with Marion, Miller, and Jones. Traded size and yout for relics. Thanks Lebron

its kind of unfair to blatt,he’s a good guy who had a great reputation in europe…

he was brought in to coach & teach a bunch of young players..but everything flipped when lebron came to town..the cavs went from being a serious contender in 3 or 4 yrs to talking about winning titles …

lebron doesnt respect him at all..recently he said he doesnt need blatt’s permission to call plays on the court….as the leader of that team lebron and the coach has to be on the same page…

i wouldnt be surprised if blatt is gone around the all star break..

waiters is one of the few players on that roster that has actually been playing solid defense of late. that includes better than lebron james.

Maybe they will have to move waiters, in order to get help in the paint protecting the rim etc, but without varejao to run the pick and roll and disrupt offense like he does, they are going to be the 6th seed at best this season. To make matters worse Chicago could end up having one of the best 4 records in the league at the end of the reg season and of course they have the right to swap picks with Cleveland. the curse of Chris Grant continues.

now that detroit got rid of the cancer of jsmith they are finaly getting back to solid bb.

My biggest takeaway from the Cavs this year is that LeBron hasn’t been as good as I thought he’d be.

It is odd how he has handled this transition, its like he is trying to seem he did this to sacrifice himself, and now he has to play with all of these bums and its all their fault they aren’t good. I also find it high comedy he can’t fully commit to Blatt as the coach, when he for years defended Mike Brown.

The Cavs biggest issue is Irving takes a ton of shots, Love can’t figure himself out, and the rest of the team just isn’t that good. A lot of older guys who have little or nothing left in the tank, and unproven younger guys who just aren’t very good.

I still think they will be scary come playoff time, but they definitely need to figure a few things out.
