even though many of us would kill to get paid to play basketball for some of these guys it’s a job. I read an article about bynes written by the director of Australian basketball operations that bynes had many more lucrative offers but wanted a chance at playing time and contending. Once you have a ring I think you get as much cash as possible but I think it’s really interesting to see some where people sign and why. Jj reddick is a guy you would think could easily help a contender, get playing time and go for a ring. No one can blame him for taking 23 million. He will be a great mentor but he’s a guys who I thought wanted that ring. PG saying he wants to go to the Lakers. Unless he thinks he can bring other players with him like LEBron he seems like it’s about the money. You see older veterans taking huge pay cuts to chase the ring and others just cashing in. I think towards the end of people’s careers you see where their priorities are. A lot of players wouldn’t work out for the Celtics because they didn’t think they would get enough PT. You see players leave for money reasons all the time even if their in a better situation. What do you guys find most interesting

Well Baynes already has a ring with the Spurs. I think most basketball players, first and foremost, want to play basketball. Money is important, but to feel appreciated and wanted is potentially more important. I mean, if someone offered Player X 12 million to play for a team where he’d be buried on the bench, he might be willing to take 10 million if he was going to play.

Sometimes, like with Kobe or LeBron, it’s all about what the money represents. Because LeBron is arguably the best player in the NBA, he wants to be paid as such and sets his market value at the max. Each player has their own motivations, but I think for most players, the overriding motivation would be playing time and fair compensation. The one exception to this would be an older player chasing a ring. If they’ve made their money, they may be motivated to forgo fair compensation to get a championship.
