Knicks Get: Matthews, Batum, C.J. McCollum, Future First Round Pick
Portland Gets: Carmelo
Let's face it, the Carmelo era is over. Portland has two stars in Aldridge and Lillard, just think about adding a scorer like Carmelo to the mix. This could make them potential championship contenders. Although the team is performing well now, I do not buy them as contenders in the loaded west without adding another superstar.
Knicks get good young players to replace old washed up ones, plus a future pick.
Not good for either side. NY loses their best player and a guy that puts fans in the seat for a couple of role players and unproven talent. The Blazers lose their two best wing defenders and two guys that are jack of all trades kind of ballers for a one dimensional scorer who will keep the ball out of the hands of Lillard and Aldridge. Melo will probably also be POd because he doesn't seem like the type who would like Portland.
If Portland wants to put themselves over the top for a deep playoff run they should either upgrade at C or add some firepower off the bench.
There are two things wrong with this scenario:
- The Trail Blazers are currently the best team in the West. Why would they want a ball hog/chucker in Carmelo Anthony?
- Carmelo will disrupt the team chemistry and Portland has no reason to push a panic button.
Why would the Blazers do this? They're the 2nd best team in the L, have a nice bench and very good starters.
At this point, Carmelo isn't even worth Batum and a 1st round pick.
Wow you don't seem very objective about Carmelo. He is struggling and not translating to wins but you think hes not worth Batum and probably a pick in the 20s? That's harsh
Don...it's not as simple as saying player A is better than player B, so the team would have to make the trade. Portland is playing very well right now. I think most people would agree that their starting 5 is pretty nice. All of the guys complement each other. You are talking about trading 2 starters and a 1st for Melo. You are talking about a guy that not only makes a ton of money, but is also on the last year of his current deal. So Portland gives up 2/5 of their starting lineup to rent a guy they don't need. Why disrupt the flow? If Portland did anything with a 1st rounder, it would be to upgrade their bench.
They don't need Melo hijacking the offense and not playing defense.
The Blazers don't make this trade or even entertain the offer. Melo wouldn't resign with the Blazers, the Knicks brass isn't smart enough to fleece a team of talent and future assets.
that could make sense involving melo is melo for bg,but even that has 1 % chance of happening.
Melo is also on $21 million and so to match salaries would need a fair few pieces. I agree that Portland are just doing fine at the moment and I still have a suspicion that Melo may opt in this summer and see what moves NY can make. If he jumps before STAT is off the books then he could lose out and from a financial perspective, it is mutually beneficial for NY to retain Melo.
Batum is more of a team oriented player...which is one reason why the blazers are sitting nice at the top of the western conference. Meanwhile carmelo.....
Needed a good laugh. Thanks
