GERONA, Spain (AP) — Ricky Rubio plans to part ways with Spanish basketball club DKV Joventut even if the Minnesota Timberwolves cannot reach a deal to bring their first round draft pick to the NBA.
Timberwolves president David Kahn was in Spain this week to try and help the fifth overall pick negotiate a buyout of his contract with Joventut. Rubio is at odds with his boyhood club over an $8.2 million buyout clause, which the NBA team can only contribute $500,000 toward.
Regardless of whether the 18-year-old Rubio makes the trip across the Atlantic next season, he won’t be playing at Joventut.
“I want to continue with the club but, after everything that’s happened, I don’t think they’re too comfortable having me in their squad,” Rubio said Wednesday. “I want to play in a winning team, on a team that can achieve many things.”
Spanish basketball clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona are both interested in signing Rubio if he cannot make it to the NBA this season.

MallStax5Participantthe team jus got Q-Rich
plus wayne ellington.
on top of that dont forget they have Corey Brewer..one more thing.
they basically traded
a solid nba veteran (mike miller)
a young player (foye)for a point guard (rubio)
in an already point guard rich draft..
why give all that when there were going to be other point guards?
also knowing that you were going to take flynn?
doesnt make any sense.0 - Posted on: Wed, 07/22/2009 - 9:04am #187576
doubledribblerParticipantIf he comes over they need to trade one. Personally, I think Rubio will be the better player, but they need to trade one. At best I see Flynn as a young Bobby Jackson. Either way, they need to trade one while they both have high value still. I don’t think it’s a good idea for a bad team to start two young point guards or make them battle it out all season. Both guys are competitors and know that they should be starting and it doesn’t make sense to start two guys that can’t shoot. I probably would feel worse for whoever has to stay in Minnesota, just because that team probably has the least amount of talent in the league by far.
