Averaged a double double, shoots the ball from 20 feet well enough to keep a defense honest, measured better than expected at the combine, and even out played Ayton head to head.
Why is he stuck ranked somewhere in the second round when a player like no offense Robert Williams has been ranked about 15thish for the past couple seasons as a one trick pony? (No he’s not DeAndre Jordan!) It’s about a 30 pick difference! Williams somehow didn’t even improve from the year before either. smh.

I think that’s in part because Williams has a clearly defined role at the next level. You know you’re gonna get a very athletic, shot-blocking/rebounding center with great length (7’4”) who can roll to the rim a little, catch lobs and run the transition. Even if he’s not DeAndre, centers like Nerlens Noel, Larry Sanders (if they weren’t headcase) still have plenty of value in the NBA even if they are not star players.

With McCoy, I think the ceiling is probably a good backup big, without great athleticism, unable to defend in space or protect the rim all that well, which are necessities if you’re a big today, especially if you can’t hit threes, but can rebound some and get you a couple of garbage buckets against 2nd units. It’s why a guy like Greg Monroe has so much trouble finding a job today.

McCoy goes to the right system like the Spurs he’ll have a good career. He should be a first rounder, he held his own against the number 1 pick during the season.

Fair point, you cant argue McCoy has to be a second rounder on the basis he wont fit the league then have Ayton at 1. One of those two selections would in that sense be a mistake – either its wrong to draft Ayton that high or wrong to let McCoy slide that low.

McCoy does have 2 traits that can transfer to the next level immediately. He’s an outstanding rebounder and rim protector.

McCoy reminds me of JaVale McGee.

Well alot of it is UNLV seems to always showcase one player and those players never seem to thrive in the NBA. Anthony Bennett, Stephen Zimmerman,  Khem Birch, Rashad Vaughn, Christian Wood. The one exception maybe Patrick McCaw but he hasnt even looked that good on GSW. Alot of his points came down low in the post usually outworking guys that arent big enough or didnt have the stamina. Lots of pick and rolls and plays set for him to pin down smaller guys. He worked his tail off against Arizona Ill give him that and that performance should get him a decent contract. Might be harder for him to do that in the NBA as he is more wiry then strong and is an average athlete. Could go early 2nd round but Id rather have Spellman, Robinson and Metu.

Besides Bennett, none of the guys you named put up the numbers that McCoy put up..

      McCoy 16-10

      Zimmerman 10-8

      Khem Brich 9-8

      Christian Wood 10-6….

I don’t think it’s a far comparison to these bigs..They weren’t solid players in college like McCoy was.

I don’t think McCoy has a place in the league.  He’s just a lumbering center with good size who doesn’t play with force. Weak screens, doesn’t position himself well, doesn’t roll hard, lazy with his box out responsibilities. He’s poor in defensive rotations, isn’t quick laterally, isn’t a great vertical athlete and is a low bball iq player.  Skill-wise he doesn’t have much, showing no post moves without the quickness, shot or ball skills to face up.  His only positives are his size and that he did hit his FTs at a decent clip, which could translate to a mid game perhaps, but the way he shot his FTs and his jumpshot from the floor were different. He has a low-ish release with slow shot prep which is probably why some of his misses were horrible when contested.  His release doesn’t even work well out of the post bc his release is right into the defender’s shot contest.  I just think he’s a bad, bad player who I wouldn’t even touch mid 2nd round. To me he’s G-League fodder.  Bigger, less athletic Daniel Orton or for you old school heads, Cadillac Anderson.  He’s just a space eater who, like I said, doesn’t even play with force. Austin Wiley’s a better player than this kid but he withdrew.  I would’ve taken Fernando and Jontay Porter over him too.

I don’t like Robert Williams either, but at least he’s a tremendous vertical athlete so he has a bit more defensive potential, with equally bad offensive potential.  People just assumed he’s a really good college defender bc he could block shots, but he actually wasn’t bc he’s inattentive and doesn’t do well when he has to rotate from distance  If he played with more intensity he could be a Biyombo, but that’s a big if.  I wouldn’t want my team to draft either of these guys and my team could use a C.  I wish I knew more about int’l C’s because guys like McCoy and Williams do nothing for me.  I’d rather draft Spellman over either of em.

I think with we are looking at both ends of the spectrum with Robert Williams and Brandon McCoy. The gap is just that massive, as of now.

I too, think, that McCoy can go undrafted and maybe, just maybe, will be a fringe player in the NBA for years to come. I think we’ll have to see where Deyonta Davis and Dakari Johnson ends up in two years or so.
