NEW YORK (Official Release) — National Basketball Association game scheduled for Tuesday, April 16 between the Indiana Pacers and the Boston Celtics at TD Garden has been canceled. The game will not be rescheduled.
The NBA expresses its sympathy to all those affected by the tragedy in Boston earlier today.

I’m glad the NBA decided to cancel the game in wake of the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon.

I think the most pathetic thing that is a bomb resulting in 50 deaths in the Iraq virtually goes unreported in mainstream news.

Do you think the reason most of those bombings get no media attention is because they happen in places where bombings are a normal occurrence? When there are similar terrorist attacks on say England, France, and Spain we certainly here about it, but when its the middle east from news standpoint it seems like it never happened.

It my be an unpopular opinion, but I agree with nick5354. There are so many oversea tragedies that see many people die, including american soldiers or innocent civilians that get swept under the rug. And don’t get me wrong, I feel for those families that were effected by todays horrible events.

First off my condolences to the family affected by this tragedy and I think it was a classy move on the part of the NBA to cancel the game. I also second the opinion of nick5354, think he hit the nail on the head.

Those don’t get the same media coverage because they don’t affect the millions of American civilians that are here in the states. Lord KNOWS if there was ever a war on US soil, every broken bone would be reported as a tragedy. I feel for the victims of the Boston Marathon and all those affected but there is a world out there where events like this happen weekly or monthly and everyone else here in the states is happily living in a bubble unless if they seek out the information the press isn’t putting out.

I’m glad to see everyone put things in perspective here. What happened today in Boston is an incredible tragedy. I’m certainly not saying that it should be overlooked in any way. I just wish people would pay more attention to the extreme forms of violence (both direct and structural) that cause so much hardship throughout the world everyday. The next time someone says another word about going to war with North Korea or Iran or anyone else, I really hope everyone thinks about the violence in Boston today. Take what happened at the finish line of the Boston marathon and multiply that carnage by one million (at least!) and that’s what a war with either of those countries would mean.

When innocent US citizens are killed and maimed that’s surely a tragedy. But it should also be a tragedy when the US military kills innocent Pakistani and Yemeni civilians in illegal and terroristic drone strikes. We can’t continue to view US lives as sacred while the rest of the world is seen as collateral damage. Hell, 60,000 people starve to death everyday. And that’s not because we don’t produce enough food to feed everyone, but because we live under a global system in which the profit of mega-corporations is more important than a person’s most basic human needs. I know this isn’t really basketball related at all, but so be it. Tragedies like this always present an opportunity (however brief) to see things in a different light.

To be fair, Iraq is still a war zone in many respects, a bomb there is no less tragic, but much less relevant to citizens of Western countries.

A bomb going off in a city at peace has implications beyond the death count, which is why it was so reported upon.

Plus, there’s no denying it was completely unexpected and thus even more shocking.

I’m not trying to dismiss the tragedy in Iraq, because every human life is precious, but to bring it up in this context is comparing apples and oranges.
