So my friend and I were debating which Finals matchup would have the biggest historical implications, and I said Warriors-Cavs because Steph and Lebron matching up is any basketball fan’s wet dream. He said he wasn’t as big of a fan of that as he is for KD and Lebron because they play the same position. I countered with Bird and Magic, and he claimed that they were basically East and West coast versions of the same team. My first thought was they’re almost opposites with the Lakers Showtime style and the Celtics being a more half court style team, but I don’t know enough about each to make a claim. How could these teams be described?

You basically said it Boston had that grind it out style with their big 3 and Johnson and Ainge. Larry Legend could make the play or pass it to either member and when they got Walton he was a starter on the bench. The Lakers had Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Scott, and AC Green. Gave up allot of points but could D up when necessary…

Lakers were Showtime with all the Hollywood on and off the court.  Boston was the hardworking, fundamental team game.

    Your opposite idea is best.

Forward Bird ran the offense, point guard Magic ran the offense for the Lakers.  Kareem had hooks, Parish shot high-arc shots and McHale had spinning post scoops.  Shooting guards, Scott was dunks and 3s while Dennis Johnson was defense and driving.

I think the 1984 NBA Finals set some records, the most famous teams and the two best players with a rematch from the NCAA years before.

Boston’s 86 team and/or the Lakers 87 team were the best 2 teams EVER IMO, though different styles for sure.

as far as now Cleveland (Lebron) vs GS (Curry) is what I call a necessary rematch. All of last year, it was what if Cleveland (Lebron) had Love and K Irving, who were both injured. Well now the Cavs are healthy and playing well while GS is actually playing better than ever. I need to see this series.

BUT Durant and Westbrook make for an excellent consolation prize should they beat GS, which can happen.

I always thought it was a shame LeBron and Kobe never matched up in the finals. Back in 2009 it seemed like it was heading right to that, both were the clear top 2 guys in the sport in terms of ability and hype, they were the top names in the NBA. There were even those goofy puppet nike commercials. Cleveland wasn’t really special outside of LeBron despite somehow winning 66 games but were mismatched against Orlando. Lakers would have won that series against as well.

years…….      Boston was also top 8 Offense…….. They were a Very balanced team………

Conversely, the Lakers were Top 15 Defense……… but usually #3 in Offense…… but they had an absolute Stopper in Michael Cooper & an All Time Great shot blocker in Kareem…… So they could & did lock down in the Playoffs…..

The idea that Boston was ONLY a lunch pail team that grinded out wins…… & L.A. was ONLY a glitz & glamour squad that focused Only on scoring just is Not completely True…….

Those 80’s Celtics could score with Anyone…….. & The 80’s Lakers could grind on Defense & beat you down in half-court offense if they needed to……

A really huge final IMO is when you have two teams who have both won it with mostly their current rosters meeting in a final for the first time or the newer team against the more established team.

Lets say LBJ had stayed with Miami and it was them against GSW this year potentially.
