RooneyParticipantWhat do you guys feel are the biggest needs for your favorite teams? I know some teams draft BPA but I was just wondering what position you want your team to draft.

festar35ParticipantThe biggest need is a second scorer to go along with Paul George, whether they are a PG, SG, PF or C. Position wise I still feel they would benefit from a PG who is a PG, not Hill who is better suited to the SG spot. Obviously some big man youth and athleticism wouldn’t go a miss Indiana, as I write this it makes me realize Indiana has a lot of work to do to get back where they were the previous two seasons.

zer0d0ubtI’m starting to think that a Marcus Smart – Jerian Grant backcourt could be really really good.

zer0d0ubtIThomas is an elite 6th man, and probably should have won 6th man of the year. And he can still finish games most of the time, at least when he’s having a good game.
Grant would be a big offensive upgrade over Avery Bradley, and would fit perfectly with Brad Stevens’ pass heavy motion offense.
Smart is a great player, but he does better defending SGs, and does better offensively against shooting guards as well, because they are slower and Smart is still stronger than them.
Smart and Grant can both excel on the ball and off the ball, and are both good passers. Grant is the better passer, and the better ball handler.
Having somebody like Grant, or Wright, would allow the Celtics to play somebody other than Evan Turner at starting SF. Like Crowder if necessary.
Thomas, Bradley, and Turner off the bench would be great depth, along with Olynyk.

festar35ParticipantI like the idea of Smart and Young going forward give them a chance, Celtics need rim protection.

TarHeelRavenParticipantAs a Wizards fan I think their biggest needs are a big man and a back-up point guard. In my opinion, Nene was embarrassingly bad against the Hawks. I have read many articles stating he played solid and should stay on the team with a reduced role next season but I just don’t believe that. I think Nene is washed up, injury prone and has basically lost all the athleticism he has had due to age and injury. The Wiz can do so much better. I believe they are absolutely set with Wall, Beal, Otto and Gortat but could use a massive upgrade over Nene. Ramon Sessions just isn’t very good. Wall is a perennial all-star and one of the top point guards in the game. I don’t even think Sessions is an NBA player. He’s quick and has some speed but can’t shoot and has not court awareness. Just my opinions, but I think the Wiz need to upgrade Sessions and Nene.

Captain LParticipantJazz have a good nucleus but need a stretch 4 or 5, my first choice is Lyles , I like how he is versatile, can play some 3 as well as the 4, next I would take Turner if he is healthy, he can play a stretch 5 and 4, If he is healthy he probably goes before the Jazz pick, next I would take Kaminski , I think he would be a good fit along side Gobert and Favors, he can stretch the floor and has good skills, next would be Portis, if they don’t go for a stretch 4 and go with a wing I would hope Johnson slides but I doubt that happens, Oubre, Decker, Booker would be my order of these guys. The draft is always an interesting time, I just hope Lyles is the pick for the Jazz.

zcnumerounoParticipantThe Bucks need a center, preferably a one who can rim-protect and that isn’t a string bean (ahem, John Henson). Also, the Bucks could use depth and some scoring down low (maybe Frank the Tank?)

MikeCoppParticipantRealistically, the Knicks shouldn’t waste their 4th pick on a PG unless trading down in the draft enables them to unload Calderon’s burdensome contract. If this proved impossible to accomplish, there simply would not be enough point guard minutes to go around with both Calderon and Galloway under contract. However, if the Knicks were somehow able to both trade down and deal Calderon, Cameron Payne might be the perfect Garden and Triangle point guard to replace him.
Disregarding need and drafting the best player on the board may be the most tried and true NBA draft strategy during normal times, but the Knicks’ commitment to Carmelo Anthony makes their urgent draft priority filling a position void with someone who can contribute immediately. For this Knicks draft at least, project players need not apply. Similarly, our commitment to Carmelo Anthony forces us to rebuild through free agency by collecting as many immediately contributing players who can both adjust to the triangle offense and play defense. At this point the heavily rumored Greg Monroe is our most likely 2015 free agency target.
The triangle offense demands offensive versatility, including the ability to penetrate, to space the floor within a shooting range of 15 – 20 ft, and to move without the ball. Strong rebounding is also a major point of emphasis. Most of Jackson’s championship teams were among the top 5 teams in rebounding, ensuring them an abundance of second-shot scoring opportunities. For Jackson, versatility on offense extends to the quality of backcourt play. He prefers to have both guards share the play-making and shot making responsibilities, similar to the Frazier-Monroe championship paring. If one player is having an off night shooting the other one should be capable of stepping up.
*The last two paragraphs above are paraphrased from ‘NBA Coaches Playbook: Techniques, Tactics, and Teaching Points’ Chapter 6: Triangle Offense by Phil Jackson and Tex Winter
In this year’s draft the players other than Cameron Payne who appear to be the best suited for both the New York Knicks and Phil Jackson’s triangle are: Karl Anthony-Towns, D’Angelo Russell, Justise Winslow, Trey Lyles, Devin Booker, and Frank Kaminsky.

Bed HeadParticipantWhile every big market team feels a certain sense of urgency, there’s no need to panic, imo. Which is exactly what passing on Mudiay or Russell for someone like Lyles or (God help me) Kaminsky would be. A total panic move.
Phil still has enough time left to take the "longview" approach. And I expect Melo to age quite gracefully, actually (I mean, it’s not like he relies on amazing athleticism or anything).
Oh, and also, I wouldn’t count on Monroe being much help defensively.

MikeCoppParticipantI certainly wouldn’t want to pass on Russell. I don’t think Mudiay would be able to be that star player that everyone expects him to be in the triangle offense. His value could drop as a result. As of now if we kept the pick I think Russell or Winslow would be ideal picks.
