Not all freshman set the world on fire right out of the gate and those that don’t sometimes get overlooked. Here’s a few I think will be better then others predict.

Kevin Looney 6’9 with a 7’1 wingspan. Might be the best prospect in the class. I said prospect not player. Great potential as a scorer and defender. Kid has all the tools too help the Bruins compete in the Pac-12 and will make them a tough out in march.

Kelly Ourbe 6’7 with a 7’2 wingspan. The kid started off Bill Selfs doghouse but is starting too get some playing time and showing flashes as a defender and a slasher. Also showed a nice step back and three point shot over the weekend versus Utah. Was projected too be a top 5 pick a month ago now not even projected too go in this year’s draft. Will start by conference season for KU and will be a factor for the Jayhawks sooner rather then later.

Myles Turner 6’10 with a 7’4 wingspan.  Now he’s projected too go 5th in this year’s draft too the Lakers so people are already high on him. With that being said the top five picks your usually trying too find a franchise player in the future.  Turner is an incredible prospect.  Shot blocker with very solid handles and a three point shot. I’m sure he won’t go higher then third in the draft but has to much potential too really slide. While Oakfer has more polish his ceiling is no where close too Turner.

Those are three I really like if you have someone you think people are sleeping on let me know!

As a timberwolves fan I think turner would fit great with us. He has the potential to be a solid replacement for kevin love with his shooting stroke developing and him being able to defend the paint. Teams will have a lot of trouble scoring on a frontcourt of Dieng, turner, and wiggins. Flip seems to be embracing the full rebuild and giving the young players time to develop, so he would fit right in there with that philosophy. Wiggins who has been as good as the expectations were in that he is very raw but the potential to be great is there. Lavine is very raw as well. Turner would also have bennett going against him in practice and fighting for minutes with him which should make both better.

I have been really impressed with Utah freshman Jakob Poeltl. He goes to the offensive glass hard and I think will be a force in a few years. He needs to addd strength as well as improve his outside jumper but he’s a kid to keep an eye on.

As great as the top 3 prospects are (Okafor, Towns, and Mudiay) there’s a ton of talent and potential to be had throughout the lottery and really the whole first round. The fact the most recent mock on here has Cliff and Trey Lyles going outside of the lottery speaks to the depth of this class.

Lyles is one of those guys I’m not really sure what he is great at. He doesnt like shooting the three, preferring to take the mid-range shot, he rebounds hard but almost always has a mismatch because Cal uses him as a 3. I don’t know what position he will play in the L- if it’s the three he has to show he can knock down the three.

He’s a stretch four in the NBA.

His range needs to expand to the 3 point line so his value can increase.

Anyone else mildly concerned by the lovefest going on with this guy suddenly?  Syracuse has a long list of draft busts the 10 years since Melo…he’s all the way up to #4 on the most recent mock.  Shouldn’t this team be having a bit more success (3 not great losses, struggled to beat LTech) if this guy was legit?

I watched that Texas vs UK game and Myles looked very sluggish.  Was he injured? I ask because he runs with a little limp and which looked very Thabeet-ish to me.

Kevon Looney…  I just don’t understand the hype with him.  He decent at a lot of things, but not good at any…  He kind of remind me of the PF verison of Julian Wright…  To me, he doesn’t have a lot of upside.

I’m with you on Turner.  To me he doesn’t pass the age old eye test of "Does he look like he should be running up and down the court."  Some big guys make it look effort, they look like they are a normal person when they run.  Some run just ugly, awkward and usually end up having injury concerns.  With Turners ugly stride it is almost certainly putting awkward stress on his legs.  Pair that with his skinny and slight frame, once he puts on some weight it will be hard for his legs to drag up and down the court year after year.

Turner does have a very stiff legged gait. I wonder what the issue is. Remembering that a big part of Oden’s problem was legs of different lengths, you’d want to dive in and see if there were mechanical issues. The undercarriage of a big man is pretty crucial.

I’m actually pretty happy with how Turner has played. It usually takes being benched in the pros for guys to figure out they need to run hard the whole time. Maybe he’ll get that. I’m a little torn about his future position. A year ago I’d say PF for sure. Now he has moments of ferociousness and other times he’s thrown around. I think if he can gain a buck of weight, he MIGHT be able to hold down center.

As far as players under the radar, I’m pretty sure we all know about the players mentioned. I’ll throw in Paschal Chuckwu. Reportedly 7’2" (I think he’s 7’1"), seriously mobile, and occasionally powerful. Now, if he were only skilled…

Sviatoslav mikhailiuk just turned 17 in June and is already way more advanced than oubre, not as athletic but pretty damned athletic in his own right. He’s weak right now but it hasn’t negatively effected him yet and will definitely get stronger. Prototypical says, already does most things really well by all standards. This kid is going to blow up next year with a full yr of d1 training and attention. He’s not as aggressive as you’d like yet, but I would look for that to change by half way through conference play. I don’t see oubre moving ahead of him in the rotation either, kid can flat out ball

Probably not the best, but he is not even talked about: Wesley Saunders, from Harvard. 6’5 slasher SG with do-it-all ability and great intangibles. Any team who drafts him in the 2nd round will be happy.
