Best point guard in the nation?
I consider Ty Lawson to be the best PURE PG in the nation. When I think of a PG I think of someone who not only can score when they need to, but who can pass. And in my opinion, I think Ty Lawson is without a doubt the best passer. He has a 3.32 a/t ratio which is amazing for someone who plays in a offense like UNC. You can obviously make a case for Curry, Flynn and heck, even Lavance Fields, but I not only think that Lawson has the most NBA potential, but he is also the best PG in the nation. Btw, you could have added Darren Collision to the list.
I agree but like I said there are a few more that I couldn't think of like Collinson, Patty Mills, or Lester Hudson and prolly more. This isn't a top pg list just a few I had heard.
This is a very hard question to answer. You could make a case for about 5 or 6 of them. Its just about who you like the most. But personally I like Maynor, Lawson, Teague, Flynn and Curry. But you can easily make a case for either one of those five as the best. Those five are very good at what they do on the court. They all have more strengths than weakness. Great question jaredpaul89!
I agree with the teague comment but I think Flynn is close in the potenial department as far as the NBA goes.
OMG!!! Jonny Flynn is better than any other point guard in the nation, hands down point blank period. There isnt another point guard thats even in his league right now. He has no weakness.
Flynn depends on his right hand too much to say he has no weakness. And he isn't a great three point shooter but he definatly is a top 5 point guard. Saying he has no weakness is an overstatement.
Eric Maynor is undoubtedly the best point guard in the nation. From his freshman year up until his senior year he has done nothing but improve each year. He is a leader and a playmaker. He makes everyone on the floor better and without his presence on the floor VCU is nothing. He puts his team on his back every night and scores almost @ will. He faces double and sometimes triple teams yet somehow he always manages to get off. How many other guards in the NCAA do you know that have to play against teams whose gameplan is to stop him?? He is always poised, under control, and he understands the game of basketball. He has carried his team to the NCAA tourny 2 out of 4 yrs. CAA teams don't get much respect and the conference is looked upon as weak but whenever he has faced a team from a "bigger" conference he has done nothing but shine. In my opinion he is the only "Pure" PG in college basketball right now. If you take any other PG for any other team and replace them with Maynor I guarantee that team would be better than they currently are. People don't understand the load this guy carries and somehow continues to win games. And there is nobody in the country that can change speeds as well as he does...True Baller!!
I think just the opposite about the Curry to Portland statement. I think he would be a better fit for memphis because Mayo is going to be the primary ballhandeler there and a sharpshooting point to play off him would suit him well. Like B-Roy said, Portland could use a pure point but not a tweener.
I think Curry because if Curry played point guard with ACC or Big East talent he would be metioned as player of the year. He would average less points and more assists, but overall he would be more efficent. I would love to see Curry and Maynor square off.
I personally dont think collison should be mentioned on this list. I think collison satying in college after the final 4 run ucla had a few years ago hurt him rather than helped him. Collison was a hot topic about being drafted 2 yrs ago and now he's really not being mentioned. he's been exposed point blank
First off, I am not bias. I hate UCLA. I think Darren would be a solid pro player. He has lightning quickness and he is a deadly shooter from the 3 and from FT line. He also is a solid defender. His lack of strength will hurt his stock and so will his unusual release, but I think staying at UCLA for 4 years will really help him in the long run.
Flynn,Teague,Lawson,Curry,Price,Maynor,Collins,Mills,Calathes,Collinson. I think thats a good crop of young point guards.I think they all are going to be pretty good to decent, Flynn and Teague could be franchise type point guards.Lawson,Mills, and Price could be the type of guys that teams take later in the draft and become starter caliber players quicker than expected.Maynor,Collins, and Calathes have a chance to get picked by above average teams and make a contribution sooner rather than later.Collison and Hudson are 2 point guards I see being very good bench players.Hudsons ability to do a little bit of everything will help his draft status and also help him garner minutes at the 1 and the two.Curry is very hard to read but I have a good feeling about him he's going to make a team that gambles on him very happy. The thing is the right team has to pick him, I don't think he can play in every system. I would like to see him play for Phoenix,Dallas,Miami,or Memphis.
Lawson: 16.1ppg, 6.5apg, 47% from 3pt line, 2.7rpg, 2spg
Maynor: 22.4ppg, 6.2apg, 36% from 3pt line, 3.6rpg, 1.7spg
Though it is close, I'm goin wit Maynor being the purest grwgoden08. Consider the # of games Maynor has played compared to Lawson this season as well.
Am I watching the same player everyone else is this kid is hands down better than every PG in college basketball he's more of a pure point guard than any other guard, a lot of these guards have a score first mentality Maynor is the exception he reminds me of a PG version of Brandon Roy. Its not even close in my opinion.
jonny flynn hands down the best point guard in the country. he does everytrhing for his team, smart with the ball, great defense, oh and btw he's pretty athletic. If he decides to stay in college for another year to get a title (whole starting five can come back) it'll just help him in the draft.
Name one of the great points in the nba right now who is not atheltic. There are only few bkb players who can succed in the league with standard athleticism.( i will rate my athelticism appreciation with numbers)
Paul he is quick, explosive and strong for a little PG (not to mention his leadership and ultra special passing skills)9
Deron W he is quick, strong and has a good size as a PG, overall above average athelete.8.5
Rondo (ultra quick, strong and athletic)9.5
Nash (just quick and good offensively) 8.5
Rose( he is just 10)
Now the prospects (My rank in athleticism)
Curry : Fast but frail, not super explosive and not a pure 7 (he will be a good reserve point or instant offense ala R.Murray)
Maynor: Moderately fast, not explosive and pure PG 7 ( slower steve nash)
Lawson: Fast, moderately explosive and a pure 8.5 (poor man Deron williams)
Flynn : Damn Fast, explosive 9 ( a poor man Chris paul)
Calathes: Slow, not explosive, good size and passing skills 6.5 (he reminds me a shorter Shaun livingston with more shot accuracy)
Teague (explosive and fast) 9 a bit Raw (he could be a better Randy foye, but needs a team that develops him)
Mills (fast, explosive) not a pure ( another poor man Chris Paul)
i havent seen too much about collison and the others in order to give my opinion
After this, my point to the table, Maynor and curry are just average in the Ath deptarment) they have a low ceiling
they will be reserves i think, but Maybe maynor compensates his lack of Athleticism with good IQ
Teague is the high risk pick, but has the higher ceiling and is the most athletic
Flynn is nice, if he develops a better jump shot he could be a starting point a la Calderon.
Mills will be a good player of the bench, needs to develop a jumpshot
If i were a GM on a good team i choose Maynor (he is the most finished product now)higher IQ
on a bad team ( i will choose Teague and develop him) high athleticism
on an average team (Flynn or Lawson) as they are safe picks. (good IQ, good Athleticism)
What do you think?
1) FLYNN
2)Lawson
3)Teague
4)Mills
5)Maynor
i dont think curry is top 5 because hes not a pure point if he was 6'5 or so he would be a ridiculous 2 guard, and price is a little inconsistent but there really are to many contenders for spots 3-10 its ridiculous
I know he doesnt belong in this conversation, but since its about points I wanted to slide him to see what the concensus was on his play this year. I know every time I have seen Zona play (about 5-6 times) this guy has done mad work. He is leaps and bounds better than he was last year and I honestly dont see them being that much better if it was Brandon Jennings running the point for them. Not saying he is a better player than Jennings (only because I have not seen Jennings play), but Wise is definetly one of the most effective points in College B-ball this year. What do you all think?
i would have to say Lawson and Flynn are the 2 best PG's in the nation, with a slight edge to Lawson.
Even though Jeff Teague is the highest rated PG as a pro prospect, Lawson and Flynn are the better college players(even though both are projected 1st round picks).
I think Lawson can be a better shooting version of Tony Parker in the NBA, and Flynn has that IT factor and toughness like CP3. As for Teague, well, he is a 2-guard in a SG's body, so he's not really a true point. But nonetheless he is a talented guard, and reminds me a lot of a taller version of AI b/c he is so explosive offensively.
Lawson a better version than Tony Parker. Thats tough I dont think Lawson will be able to get his shoot off in the pros like Parker and his mid range game is on the level of Parker (i.e parkers floater). Parker is a top 5 point guard in the league. Lawson wont be a top 15 point guard in the league.
I have to go with Toney Douglas.

I have been trying to fugue out who the best point guard in the nation over the last few weeks. I just can't seem to decide. I have been watching the top pgs every chance I get to narrow the gap. I have heard numerous announcers make their case for their point guards. Keep in mind, these are just some names I heard mentioned, not necessarily my picks.
Ty Lawson
Levance Fields
Jonny Flynn
Steph Curry
Eric Maynor
Jeff Teague
There are more I just can't think of them right now. In your opinion, who is the best point guard in the nation?
