My buddy and I were at a sports bar last night watching the Blackhawks @ Soldier Field and OK State vs. Kansas.  We got into the discussion of the best college backcourt RIGHT NOW (not talking about IF the Harrison Twins develop, if Zach Lavine puts it all together).  We were trying to frame it in regards to the 2014 NBA Draft, as well.  I was tempted to go with Oklahoma State, which is what my friend Pete voted for.  They have 2 possible 1st Round Picks in:

    Marcus Smart and Markel Brown

But I watched a Missouri game this year and was really impressed with:

    Jordan Clarkson and Jabari Brown

and they were just lighting it up (both of which might be 1st rounders as well).

What do you guys think?  Is UCLA better?  Arizona?  Syracuse?  Kentucky?  Just interesting that 2 teams that have potential 1st round backcourts aren’t neccessarily the favorites to win the NCAA tournament.

WVU needs to get a mention here because Eron Harris and Juwan Staten are by far the best players on their team.

Staten is one of if not the most efficient player int he nation and Harris is the best 3 point shooter in the Big 12.

i would go michigan state. appling has improved so much and harris is lethal. i don’t think they are necessarily the best nba bound tandem, but as far as best college back court, they are solid. i tend to associate more back court with perimeter play, and both players can shoot and create as well. of course, this is assuming appling is healthy. he’s been playing terrible of late, ever since his wrist injury. oklahoma state might have the best future nba players and defensive pressure though, but smart and brown have shaky shooting range.

best college back court will not necessarily translate to the league.

Yes!  Sorry, I forgot Michigan State.  But Appling and Harris will most likely be both drafted (Harris for sure, Appling mid to late 2nd round) so that would definitely apply. But we were (last night anyway) kind of framing the question with both college and the NBA in mind.  So, as good as Zach Lavine might be in the NBA, if he comes out this year he will not even be a starter in college.  Like we decided that Michigan from last year was a great college/NBA backcourt with Hardaway Jr and Trey Burke.  They both were very good in college and so far have had some success in the NBA as well.

No Stauskas and Walton. They are coming on strong with Levert.

Uconn deserves a mention, Napier is arguably the best player in the nation (yes, he’s a better play than McDermott, although obviously not the shooter), and Boatright is pretty darn good himself.

I think OK State, MSU and Uconn are the top 3. I think the WVU call is a nice under-appreciated one, and Michigan’s is very good because Stauskas is having just a great year.

As a UNC fan, can you imagine the back-court of PJ Hairston with the maturation of Marcus Paige we’ve seen this year!? (Paige has been solid in their 11 game winning streak)

Hairston has been KILLING the D-League and Paige has some impressive scoring outbursts under his belt! Sucks for the fans we didn’t get to see that back-court grow and develop. Would’ve been quite the offensive duo!

i would throw duke out there.  i think their stats are pretty scewed because the offense runs through hood and parker.  sulaimon is a great all-around player, dawkins is a lights out shooter, cook is a great pg, thorton is a pesky defender and provides senior leadership.  and matt jones was a top-15 recruit that can’t find any floor time.

I’ll take Stauskas, LeVert and Walton with Irvin and Albrecht coming off the bench over any other team’s collection of guards.

I love Ennis but Cooney is WAY too inconsistent for the Orange to be in the mix.  IMO it comes down to Sparty and UCLA.
