mikeyvthedonParticipantNot the best college basketball history, but we won the first ever NCAA Tournament in 1938-39. The team was nicknamed "The Tall Firs" due to our "tall" front court. Guess times have changed, but our "Tall Firs" were 6’8 Slim Wintermute, 6’4 Laddie Gale and 6’4 John Dick. Wintermute, Gale and 5’8 Bobby Anet were all named All-Americans following the season.
Other notable alumnus include Terrell Brandon, Stan Love (Kevin’s dad), Greg Ballard, Ron Lee, Blair Rasmussen, Luke Ridnour, Luke Jackson, Malik Hairston, Steve "Snapper" Jones, Ivan Johnson (at least briefly) and Aaron Brooks. Mac Court was famous for being rowdy and had some great victories, upsets during its time.
Were one of the few teams to beat the Bill Walton led UCLA squad, with the Ducks squad featuring current Executive of Basketball operations Stu Jackson. Went to the Elite 8 in 2002 and 2007, giving the repeating Florida team one of their better match-ups of the NCAA Tournament. Not an amazing basketball history for my school, but I still cheer for them regardless. Looks like we are on the right track to get basketball near our football/track program.
