Overhyped or just that good ?
All I had seen on him up until last week was youtube highlights, which make everybody look great. But after watching his AAU team on ESPNU last week I think the dude is legit. He didnt have a great game, but way quicker and more explosive than I thought he would be. He also shows great feel and intangibles which is hard to teach. Future all star in my opinion.
Overrated, pretty much a Steph Curry knockoff.
Wayy farther along than Curry at this point of the game. Curry just had a great rookie year BTW but I think Austin is a little bigger, more athletic, and has a better frame already than Curry does. The kid can straight up score.
Underrated. I think he's better then alot of people think. I would not be surprised if he went to become a combo guard at the next level.
I think he's going to Duke.
He is an overprivileged basketball player who is only thriving because of his father's name. He is not garbage, but let's just say I've seen players with his game dozens of times, and those players are at best overseas. This kid will obviously make it to the NBA, but not because he is a true standout. Overrated.
Rivers is NOT gonna be able to score like Curry ( freshman year) and his court vision isnt on par with Curry...
One thing he has over Stephen Curry is his size, hes already 6'4 175lbs hes going to get even bigger and stronger, hes going to be a big NBA PG.
You must have not seen him play. I'm just going to assume that.
Most definately looks like a 6ft4 NBA point. Obviously has to work on his shot more and stop leaving his feet when he passes, but he is young. Better athelete than Steph Curry with maybe two more inches in height on Curry. Do not think he shoots like Curry, but more explosive 1 st step and finishing ability.
BETTER Than Advertised ..
It seems like ESPN has proclaim this the Austin Rivers Weekend'''..They've showed his tournaments all weekend.
But its hard to get a real good accessment of how good he can be..
Becuz he plays at his own pace..He hasnt shown that mean streak that you'd want your best player to have..
But he's played smart, made good decisions with the ball and gets to the right places at the right time..
I see a little of Danny Green..And a little Brandon Roy in his game...I hope he turns out to be another Brandon Roy......
He's pretty quick and has a nice shooting stroke, even though he was off due to rushed shot selection on ESPNU. He can be a PG, but in college I think his scoring will be featured more than his playmaking skills (even though he should get around 5 apg). He seems like a PG to me, and shows promise in the pick-and-roll. He'll be good, and reminds me of Stephen Curry as well, and as he continues to grow and get stronger he should be a nice little PG who can show great ability to score and pass in the triple threat.
Like a couple said above, he's a lot more athletic and explosive than I thought he was
the dude looks like a jonas brother..but he's mad good at ball sky's the limit for him..best offensive player in the class (A. Davis and Q Miller are up there too). His pops said his offense right now is better then his was when he was an all star in ATL, but that his D basically sucks and isn't anywhere near NBA ready.
It's nice to see Austin still goin strong though..i rmember he was ranked the top 6th grader in the nation at one time. Usually those guys fall off the face of the earth.
He has so many moves to the basket, and is a very good shooter. He has hops, but his size forbids me from calling him a sure shot star. It all depends on how much muscle he developes over the next few years. Developing better point guard skill wouldn't hurt either. I wouldnt call him overrated, but he's not a sure thing
I love the kid's dribble game but some other aspects of his game need a lot of work.
He is a true volume shooter who can get hot and knock a lot of shots down but he basically pulls on sight, he's a true black hole and is not the type of kid you would want to play with.
For a son of a stand up guy like doc, the kid sure has some maturity and attitude problems. He pouts after every call that doesnt go his way. and he's always pissed at his teammates who dont pass to him.
I think he looks to get his own a lot and cares too much about himself on the court, a very selfish player
he also doesnt put effort in on defense, none whatsoever. He basically couldnt guard a chair.
I havent decided what to make of him yet, but he's got parts of his game that really need ironing out, but hopefully they will change with time and maturity.
The only time I've seen him play was last year against Brandon Knight and he was staying right with Knight in scoring (I think Rivers had 40 something and Knight had 50 something.
personally, i dont count aau as anythin... dont take much in2 account
Definitely hyped up as he should be, he is a phenomenal scorer, has the ability to take over games, very confident player, underrated passer, very quick, great handle only thing is for his position which is SG he is not that tall nor is he very muscular, in college he can excel without growing or gaining that much muscle but for the NBA he either needs to switch to the PG position or bulk up a lot but to be more successful I would suggest to switch positions, he is already a combo guard because he can play PG in spurts but to be a full time PG is a lot of work but I believe he can make the jump, he has a tremendous basketball IQ so it won't be too hard, I love his game though expect a Steph Curry clone except better at getting to the rim and foul line with Curry being the better Shooter.
al lot of players dominate at the highschool level but until they reach he nba and produce numbers and win games they havnt proved anything. high school and the nba r 2 diffrent skill levels just ask quame brown. if rivers really is as special as people say then well probaly seem they well see him in a future allstar game and if not then well just see another mike dunlevy
When he gets to college we could revisit this question. I'll have a better gauge of how his skill set will translate to the next level as well as what position he's best suited for. And high school ball really means nothing, everyone pretty much that's a top 100 recruit dominated in some kinda way. College is almost the great equalizer of all this talent coming from the prep ranks.
He will destroy college competition. His offensive game is so advanced for his age it's unreal. He really needs to work on getting others involved, definitely does not have the ability to make his teammates better..instead of trusting his teammates, he tries to take over the game for 32 minutes (HS Time)..pretty sure he doesn't know what defense is
i think his dads name is giving him alot of hype as well. he takes alot of bad shots. i watched the game and was like dam did he really jus shoot that shot. but hes got many skills and is a pretty good playmaker. i think we will find out how good he is when he gets around better teammates
in no way is he a pg. right now, he's all a 2.
If you can't pass or trust your teammates in AAU, when will you?
He definitely drives and attacks better than he did last yr.
Also he can really show his ass sometime when things are not going smooth.
He's a great scorer, and an underrated rebounder.
He;s just that good his hot look unorthodox but he has in the gym range wherever he steps on the gym his shot is money his crossovers are so quicke he is an underrated passer though i think in college he will be a 2 but in the nba he will be a scoring og in the mold of gilbert arenas thats who he reminds me of without the guns lol.
are you serious@scorebuckets?...i can recal many pg in aau in the past who didnt passs much. i watched a couple of cp3's games and in those games he shot the ball just about every time so his team could win. many players who are future pg shoot the ball alot in aau. steph curry shoot alot at davidson untill his last year where he showed he could play pg. austin already has the ability to find the open man and get past any guard who checks him with his great handles so what exactly hasnt he shown to make you think he cant play point?..just because he shoots alot?
aau shooters/scorers who are or will be pretty good pg
when youre in hs and you are unstoppable as a scorer its not too many times where you are gonna be asked by youre coach to pass the ball since youre teammates dont have the same ability to finish that you do
over privaliged?...just because his father is a former nba player and now a coach with millions you think he's over privilaged?..so you condem him because he was bron into a great situation?..its not like he doesnt work hard on his game or earned anything he's gotten because of how good he is right?
Looks like he took the rivals #1 spot over Gilchrist
