Lotto StudParticipantLloyd Pierce has been hired to a 3-year contract to become the new head coach. This may be a win-win situation throughout the rebuilding phase since he has ties to Philadelphia and what they were able to piece together over the past few years.
What are your thoughts on this move, Hawks’ fans?

Andv1 WaitingParticipantTo put it this way you go from a proven coach and one that has proven both that:
He can win with talent.
and
That he was good at player development.
to
A unproven assistant head coach.
This looks like a we are going to be bad for a few years sort of Job aka a tank job. Hence why Mike B wanted out…Well unless he didn’t want to stick around after losing his ops role that is.

Arc12345ParticipantNot sure how this is a win-win. I’d rather have an established coach who knows what he’s doing simply for development purposes.
I know Philadelphia has done well, but it’s hard not to end up with a couple of studs who turn out decently when you’re in the lottery every damn year. Hard for me to give credit to Lloyd Pierce for much of that at all.
We just better nail our draft picks and pray he can actually develop the talent we acquire and some of the talent we have because he wouldn’t have been my first choice. Not sure we could’ve done much better. It’ll be a long rebuild knowing Atlanta.

220ParticipantIn response to the statement that "it’s hard not to end up with a couple of studs who turn out decently when you’re in the lottery every damn year."
A bunch of teams have had much longer stays in the lottery before they were able to make the playoffs again. Those multiple lottery picks provided them players with potential but no playoff appearances like the T-Wolves until this year, the Suns, The Lakers, The Kings, The Magic, The Knicks, and there are undoubtedly other examples but these are the recent good ones.
That being said it’s hard to truly measure how good an assistant coach is when watching a game. Hopefully for the Hawks sake they know what they’re doing.

HitsterParticipantThe Hawks brought in Travis Schlenk from GSW last summer to be their new GM and now hiring Lloyd Pierce who has been part of the "Process" in Philly, they have two guys who have been part of rebuilding a team upwards via the draft.
Lloyd also worked alongside Travis briefly at GSW a few years back so there may be a link there.
I’ll be interested to see what Mike Budenholzer does going forward with James Borrego having left the Spurs for the Hornets Head Coach role and Budz having worked alongside Poppovich and Burford for many years at the Spurs. Might Budz return to a role there with a view that Popps turns 70 next year and good jobs will come up there as Pops holds both President and Head Coaching roles and there will likely be some succession planning going on.

BeastMode716ParticipantHawks are at the beginning of a Full Rebuild & Banks is not only the Phila 76ers Defensive coach / Guru
But Banks was part of Brett Brown’s coaching staff thru the Entire Sixers Rebuild – Brown’s attention to detail, relentless positive attitude & ability to give the Sixers players individual as well as team Short & Long term goals thru ALL that losing was absolutely instrumental in growing the incredible culture that exists in Phila right now
Banks was on the ground floor of that Rebuild & when you combine that w/ the Defense piece he is the Perfect choice to oversee the Atlanta Hawks Rebuild
Great Hire Atlanta! – The Hawks Never once sat a healthy player, played hard all year & were trying Hard to win up to the Final game of the year – that organization Never once Tanked this year…… Pulling hard for the Hawks to do well in the Draft & beyond

HitsterParticipantLloyd had well over a decade as an Assistant so he deserves a shot at the top job. He worked with LBJ first time round in Cleveland and had 5 years alongside Brett Brown in the process.
The Hawks are likely to have a few losing seasons but should be able to add a nice piece with their main pick this year and have additional first rounders due this year and next so they will have a fair bit of ammo going forward. They have cap space to make offers to guys or can take on salary dumps for assets etc.
