highflyer0ParticipantI don’t want this to sound too negative but I feel like this is a good place for me to vent a little bit. I love the NBA. Basketball is my favorite sport by far and the NBA is the greatest basketball league, by far. But, as much as I’d like to believe what some other posts and articles are saying, KD going to the Warriors doesn’t make basketball more interesting for me. Peronsally, it’s simply depressing. I do not hate Durant. I don’t think he’s a bad guy. But that doesn’t change the fact that I wish he had gone to any other team in the league besides Golden State. Of course the Warriors could still lose but, on paper, there is no team even close to touching them in terms of sheer talent.
They are laughably more talented than anyone else. As a Lakers fan, I understand that I may not have the right to complain about one team hogging all of the stars but this seems even more ridiculous to me, simply because this Warriors team does not have a Bird-led Celtics team to combat it. It is just head and shoulders above the competition. In a way, it almost seems as though stars such as Chris Paul, Paul George, Harden, and Westbrook are meaningless. Unless they come together and make the league even more top-heavy, they will always be on teams far less talented than this Warriors team, at least until they are out of their respective primes. Even if the Warriors fail to mesh at first and seem vulnerable, Durant going to GS destroyed one of the few other elite teams in the NBA, the Thunder. What’s the point of the Grizzlies signing Conley and Parsons to a longterm deal? Or the Pacers trading for Thaddeus Young? All other moves seem moot now. This may be an entertaining time for the casual fan but it’s just not for me. I’m not trying to say that my pessimistic view is the right way to think, far from it. I’m just voicing my own personal opinion on the state of the NBA at the moment. Sadly, this is the least excited I’ve been about my favorite sport in quite a while.

tblazer_NZParticipantI feel like why should I even both for a few years. I was hyped for Portlands offseason and they have gotten nothing. Evan Turner is over paid and they haven’t got stronger where they actually needed to because they missed on every big man target. It is demoralizing to see this happen with KD, if he had gone literally anywhere else I would have been ok.

ChoppyParticipantThere might not be a Bird-led Celtics team to combat them but there is a LeBron-led Cavs team. While on paper it might seem as if the Cavs are still one piece away from challenging the Warriors, Kyrie, LeBron and Love still are a solid core. And in the playoffs, anything can happen.

Arc12345ParticipantI think you’ve explained this the best way possible. Maybe not depressed, but just disappointed by the state of the NBA.
I’m just hoping other superstars and great players do what they have to in order to combat this. You can’t just let them runaway with rings. That’s honestly what I would like to see. Someone actually call out Durant and join a top team and leave their lower level one.
This won’t be good for small market teams, but I really just want at least one team to match up with them talent wise.

220ParticipantThere are no guarantees in sports. I thought last season’s Warriors would glide through the playoffs, but that’s not what happened. After going 73-9 they gave up a 3-1 lead in the finals to lose. I remember thinking when the Lakers added Karl Malone and Gary Payton that they’d be a sure juggernaut, but they lost in the finals. The Heat’s super friends made it to 4 straight finals and only won two of them.
I know on paper Golden State seems annoyingly good, but perhaps things don’t go as smoothly as they hope sharing the ball. Maybe injuries ravage their team and it never takes off who knows. I never count out the Spurs and the Cavs are the champs and Lebron is phenomenal. I get the depressing feeling here, but as they say this is why we play. Championships aren’t won on paper.

Sharp ShooterParticipantWell my pistons checked off their off season needs (although we didn’t get Horford). I still think team that have a dominant center, along with a great guard can beat the warriors. Their front line is terrible. Pachulia and green are not the best combo.
As for the warriors, I believe they should’ve kept barnes because I do believe there is going to be a clash of the egos at some point in regards to touches and last minute shots

TyroberParticipantGames arent won on paper but watching the Warriors become a dynasty and win 3-4 championships in a row will be very boring if it happens. I felt the Thunder had the pieces to beat them but I don’t see who stands a chance now. The Spurs are going to be a great team this year but they do not match up well with the Warriors at all since Durant is there now. The Cavs and Spurs are the only teams I see standing a chance against them but whats going to happen in the regular season? 30 point blowouts after 30 point blowouts against everyone else? I know we will have to wait and see what happens but as a fan I do not like this team being so much better than everyone else.

NBAjunkie81Participantup as an Epic Rivalry similar to what the East had 30 years ago when the Celtics & Sixers would go to War…….
To this day I Still get Chills if I go on Youtube & watch the 1982 game 7 where Boston attempts to recover from a 3-1 deficit to Philly in the Eastern Conference for the SECOND year in a Row but Fails b/c of Dr. J & Andrew ‘the Boston Strangler Toney"…….. & as the final seconds tick away the Celtics fans Urge the Sixers on & Chant "Beat LA! Beat LA! Beat LA!…." —- it was a Remarkable moment in NBA history……
Just like Golden State, Boston put a Great team together & Overtook Phila as the Top team in the Conference & one year Earlier recovered from the same 3 -1 deficit to beat Phila & went on to beat Houston in the Finals to capture a Title that Really felt like it should have been the Sixers — since Dr. J & Phila had been knocking on the door since 1978 – b4 Bird was even out of college……..
As that Game 7 in 1982 began it looked as though Dr. J would Never win a Ring & that the Sixers would be vanquished by the young, upstart, World Champion Celtics again……. ….. the Sixers Lost to the Lakers in the NBA Finals in 82′ but a year later the 76ers did beat L.A. & Dr. J finally won his NBA Ring (he won 2 in the ABA w/ New York)…..
I feel like Durant going to Golden State would be like Dr. J going to Boston after the 1981 collapse….. It would be unthinkable & NBA fans the World over would have been robbed of the incredible Boston vs Phila Rivalry that Dominated the NBA’s Eastern Conference from 1980 thru 1985…..
In an Instant, OKC went from a Legit NBA Title contender to a good, solid squad on its way to another Rebuild as they will Most likely Lose Westbrook now too…….
I don’t want to criticize Durant — it’s his Life….. but as an NBA fan, this Absolutely dilutes the sport…… b/c we as fans have been robbed of a potentially Legendary Western Conference Rivalry

markfitz14ParticipantThis stupid sudden cap rise is what screwed the league and allowed 4 top 20 or maybe even top 15 players to be on one team. GS should never have had max money to spend.
KD has killed the fan of average up and coming teams such as Portland and Utah. Now they are 2 max players away from competing against the GSW and that ain’t right.

IndianaBasketballParticipantRay Allen considering joining the Warriors… Crazy. How do you let go of most of your roster’s role players to sign another superstar, but somehow end up with a better role players than before?

daggers818ParticipantTotally agree with prior posts. Games are won on the court but are planned on paper, and this plan looks unbeatable right now. It’s not that fun to watch when the outcome seems a foregone conclusion. For me, it provides entertainment but lacks in drama. We will see how it unfolds, but I don’t care for the new direction of the league and these "star" players. What made GSW fun was their style and young players who came up together creating an exciting and successful Team to enjoy. With Durant’s signing and Lacob’s arrogance, they are no longer charming and root-able (only speaking for myself).
What I really don’t understand is that guys like Durant or Lebron who consider themselves to be the best players in the world don’t feel confident enough to be the THE GUY and lead teams to rings. I mean, if they are that great, then do they really need a super team? Are they truly elite leaders or just followers? Like it was said, Dr J or Bird would probably rather die than join their rival and cruise to a ring. There is no self respect in that at least to me. You are not building anything yourself. How do you feel proud about that?
There’s an old saying (I think it’s from the "Tom & Jerry" cartoons), when the cat who can never catch the mouse says, "well if you can’t beat them, then join them!" Durant just admitted defeat, and so I can’t put him in the elite if all time now. He went from a lion to a pu$$ycat.

juves4783Participantman, i agree. i’ve been bummed out ever since i heard about durant going to gs. yes, i understand that it doesn’t necessarily mean that gs will win the title but it’s more how it influences the league. instead of the big 3, now it’s the big 4. fill the rest of the roster with veterans that are willing to take pay cuts to win a ring and rookie contracts.
okc was one of the few teams i thought showed how to operate a small market team. they drafted extremely well and then used draft assets like harden, jackson and ibaka to attain more assets down the line. i think the team made great moves but at the end the day, could never secure that 3rd or 4th guy through free agency to make the big 3/4.
as a nuggs’ fan, my team is still in the rebuild phase and has a lot of work to do. we weren’t going to be a playoff team all of a sudden with our current roster and may sneak in if we do add wade (a huge longshot) so i’m not as disheartened as say a clippers or raptors fan. it’s just unfortunate to see the effects of the salary cap situation; whether it’s seeing a guy like soloman hill get $12M/year or a team like gs having the $$$ to be in the situation they are in.

nill650ParticipantIt is not good for the game of basketball on most fronts because the competition is what makes it entertaining to fans who understand the game, and love a good match up…win or lose I want to see a good match up not a 1 team dominance like we already saw last season,at least in the regular season. Obviously the dominance of the Wariors assuming it continues as the odds are good it will, is definitely going to attract more attention from those who do not enjoy a good match up but just like watching players drain impossible long range shots because the opposition does not have the personel on defense to cover 3 elite shooters. Now that they have Durant they have another volume scorer who historically has needed the ball to be effective. Whether he can or is even asked to adjust his style of play to fit into what has existed in the unselfishness of that roster and what has made them so efficient is another story. I do think that despite his woefull shooting slumps, losing Barnes will hurt them a lot defensively, and since it is really there defense despite being outshined by the wonder twins offense that made them so successful.
At the end of the day I think this team is capable of winning a lot of regular season games just like the last 2 yrs, but I do not see them being as good defensively at all with Durant on the court. It will be interesting to see if thier offense is actualy that much better than past 2 seasons that the drop in defensive efficiency does’nt matter.
I think they will continue to remain overated and are still vulnerable to getting beat badly in the paint without Bogut when they are facing monster and versatile elite 2-way frontcourts.

BiggysmallsParticipantOP stated it well.
I’m not hating on Durant. I’m not going to call him a coward. If he wants to go live in GS, make a poo load of money and win a ton of games and a number of ships, more power to him. Live and let live.
But I feel like I should be allowed to hate that the NBA, a league that already had very little competitive balance, just lost one of the few elite teams while one of the already elite teams got incrementally better.
I go on twitter or listen to the radio and you see people defending Durant so hard, saying "it’s his right…don’t tell me you wouldn’t move to take a better job" and they are right. It’s a bogus argument because sports aren’t real life, but whatever, go for it, take the better job. Do you Durant. I can’t hate on that. But it sucks that the best players are eliminating competition by teaming up.
It was basically a three or four team league last year. Somehow it’s even less now.
It just makes everything seem so pointless.

Untouchable JParticipantIts all on the new era to combat this. The older era failed. And by older era i mean Melo, CP3, Dwight, Etc. They were so focused on OTHER sh!t when it came to free agency that they didnt focus on winnign. Houston, LA, NY is all they could think about.
It took a different era, a quasi new-old era of player in GS to think of this. To say forget the ‘market’ and being in historically popular cities. Come play good clean ball and create a dynasty, not a brand.
Now its up to Minnesota to stay together and not leave for a better "market", for players to join rising stars in bad markets. It will take someone to proactively join Giannis and Jabari in Milwaukee, Simmons and Okafor/Embid in Philly, someone to take notice that Boston has 2 potential top picks on deck AND cap space AND criminally underpaid players for this era.
Do they do it or do they all flock to LA/NY/Miami and watch GS win 5, 6, 7 titles…

IndianaBasketballParticipantTo be 100% honest, there were only 4 teams in the NBA who could realistically win it all anyway. CLE, GSW, OKC and SAS. All this does is just knock OKC from the conversation.
I mean, LeBron has been to the Finals the last 6 years in the East. They’re the overwhelming favorites to make it next year too.
If you think the NBA sucks now, then you must think it sucked the last several years because only a few teams can win it. Don’t let KD signing with the Warriors stop you from enjoying what your team is doing, because realistically… Unless your team is one mentioned above, they weren’t going to have a shot at a title anyway.

IndianaBasketballParticipantTo be 100% honest, there were only 4 teams in the NBA who could realistically win it all anyway. CLE, GSW, OKC and SAS. All this does is just knock OKC from the conversation.

BiggysmallsParticipantGood point Indiana.
Though I will say this.
It’s been a long time since I viewed my team – the Wolves – as a title contender or even a playoff contender.
The disappointing thing about KD joining the Warriors is now I think even the playoffs will lack intrigue.
I’m going to enjoy – or be pissed at – the Wolves this year understanding fully that they won’t win the title. I’m just bummed that while there were at least some intriguing matchups leading up to the finals last year, that intrigue seems diminished now.

IndianaBasketballParticipantThe Warriors vs Spurs or Cavs are still very intriguing matchups in my opinion. Maybe even the Warriors vs the Clippers could be intriguing IF the Clippers can stay healthy. What about a potential GSW vs OKC first round matchup? Yea, OKC would lose, but you can’t tell me that series wouldn’t be intriguing.
I know it’s hard to see right now, but there’s A LOT of intrigue with this Warriors team. For one, the pressure will double that of last season. They’re going to get their opponent’s best game every single night. They’ll have no off nights. Every single loss will be magnified beyond belief. The media and the world will be all over this team just waiting to catch the first glimpse of an ego problem or chemistry issues. It’ll be intriguing to me to see if an underdog can actually push this team.
Speaking of the Wolves, maybe not now, but in the next 2-3 seasons… I think they’ll be a serious championship threat. I’d really enjoy seeing them in the playoffs in a matchup vs the Warriors too.

BiggysmallsParticipantOh boy I’d like nothing more than to see the Spurs somehow knock the Warriors off.
How they handle the pressure will be interesting. I’d like to assume they’ll get every team’s best shot, though I’m not sure that kind of competitive edge exists during an 82-game regular season for a lot of teams.
Good call on the Wolves. Hope they can get 12ish more wins this year. Sniff the playoffs like the Jazz have the last two years. Maybe sneak in as an eight seed and taste it.
They’ll never draw huge outside FAs, but I think if they get to the playoffs, they’ll be able to attract good players and maybe hit their window when the Warriors are coming down. That’s a long ways away, and the Wolves have found ways to screw things up before 🙂
