For_Never_EverParticipantIf Anthony Penny Hardaway and Tracy Mcgrady had both stayed healty which one would have had the better career ? Both guys could do everything offensively shoot, handles, pass, size, athleticism and could play the 1 to 3 position.

SpaceghostParticipantIf you like more of a complete game (like I do ) give me Penny. But if i like just a straight bucket getter.. TMAC was that dude.

Ebown5ParticipantMcGrady > Penny
McGrady had more talent and could have been an MVP. Penny was a great second star for a team.

Ahkasi ClayParticipantgreat players. but did not have Shaq or Gasol,
if you put either into kobes situation in a large market, both may be considered beter!

llperezPenny didn’t have close to the tough shot making ability that either Kobe or tmac had. And neither were even in the same discussion as Kobe defensively. Oh, and penny didn’t have shaq or gasol? You sure about that?

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantyep and TMac had Yao Ming for a few years who IMO was better than Gasol.
I hate it when people use the teammate argument. Yes, TMac might have had more team success if he had a prime Shaq but there’s no way he would have been winning scoring titles at the same time. TMac’s best attribute was putting the ball in the hoop having Shaq take 20+ FGA would have limited his game.

HaleParticipantYou mean the Yao Ming was always injured? He and McGrady rarely ever played together as one or the other was almost always hurt. He had a terrible supporting cast for vritually his entire career. T-Mac’s best attribute arguably wasn’t even scoring, it could have been his passing. Bill Simmons wrote an awesome article on him a few months ago that highlights most of this.

ibe12ParticipantPenny would have been an all timer if he didn’t get hurt. I saw him take it to Pippen in the playoffs one year. That’s all I needed to see.

Ty BenjaminsParticipantTracy was dynamic man. The crazy thing about him was he was said to have a HORRIBLE work ethic. Slacker in practice and conditioning yet he still was a 50 point threat night in and night out. Plus assist, boards, and blocks. Add a work ethic to that, top 5 TALENT all time

llperezWatched both of their entire careers and was more a fan of penny. He was the first jersey I ever bought and I still own it. Loved watching him. With that said, my answer is tmac and that’s with no hesitation whatsoever.

King CaluchaParticipantI wasn’t aware Tmac lacked work ethic, but he definitely had the killer instinct. Remember 13 points in 35 seconds? It’s not like he could only score. He was a decent passer, solid rebounder and defender, too.
Penny could have been a fantastic No 2 on championship team (he was really close!).

hbomb3300ParticipantI would defenitly go with Penny… he made his teamates better with his fantastic passing. McGrady is more like Carmelo… great scorer, but not a winner. He put up HUGE numbers but never got past the 1st round.

Memphisboy14ParticipantI think T-Mac had 7 straight good seasons where he was one of the most dominant perimeter players in the NBA. He had a bunch of injuries during those years but he was good enough to make the All Star game 7 times and make the All-NBA team 7 times so we were able to see how good he was. Penny Hardaway on the other hand was robbed of any kind of prime so to speak. Once he had that one major injury he never recovered from that. He made the All-NBA First Team 2 years in a row in his 2nd and 3rd NBA seasons. He made the All-NBA Third Team during an injury riddled 4th season. He started in the All Star game 4 years in a row. After that he was never able to quite recover from a major knee injury that he received in his 5th season in the NBA. He had 2 decent seasons after that but he never was the same player again. You can’t really play the what if game with T-Mac in terms of his individual success because he had a run that nobody can question. Penny Hardaway only provided a small sample size. I don’t think that injuries necessarily messed up T-Mac’s career moreso the choice of players he decided to team up with (Grant Hill, Yao Ming). Orlando tied up the majority of their money into Grant Hill which prevented them from being able to sign any capable players there. And, Yao Ming ended up being extremely inury prone as well which forced T-Mac to carry his team night in and night out once he made it to Houston. Unfortunately all of that caugt up to him once he turned 29 after the 07-08 season which was his last good year. Penny had a career similar to that of Brandon Roy where they had 4 really good years and injuries killed them after that. So you never got to see the player that they would be for the rest of their careers.
That being said I think that hands down Penny was the better passer and was a great floor general. That isn’t to say that T-Mac wasn’t a good passer because he was but not as good as Penny. T-Mac’s scoring ability and shot making ability was definitely better though without a doubt.

addi troupaParticipantLove that perspective. Penny didn’t even hit his prime and people still talk about how great he was. TMac had the opportunity that Penny didn’t because of injury so my answer is Penny. TMac played with equal talent being in Houston and couldn’t get past the first round. Penny still had to contend with the Knicks, Pacers, Bulls (without Mike but still capable), McGrady couldn’t even get past DET. Penny made teammates better, TMac?

FastAndFuriousParticipantTo each his own, and I understand Penny had immense talent but this isnt even close.
Tracy McGrady>>>>>>>>>>>> Penny
McGrady scoring abilities were SCARY dudes really could not guard this guy, he even had people saying he was better than Kobe at one point.
McGradys rebounding and defense also were better than Pennys, and Penny didnt even average more assist than him by a wide margin maybe one or two?
TMac could do it all his Olrlando days were something amazing, had Mac stayed healthy who knows what would have happened.

laxmisonParticipantTMAC , I don’t think it is even close. He was on par with Kobe for being the best wing the league for years. Penny never got to that level.
I think the better question is TMAC, AI , or DWADE : Who would start a franchise with.

bobforteParticipantThats a terrible question. Tmac is so overrated. Im not saying he is a terrible player but he settled for way to many jump shots. He is a fan favorite and an exciting player. But bringing in names like AI and WADE is ridiculous. Mcgrady has had playoff failures throughout his career. AI and Wade and even drexler in my opinion are a step above mcgrady. The Mcgrady and Penny quesiton isnt great either because Penny was hurt for a lot of his career but Ill tell you this, if im starting a team , I take penny to make my team better not for stats.

boomdizzalParticipantStats wise TMac was a monster, he is everybit and more deadly than KD in his prime offensively. He had as much range with less accuracy, better post game and his handles and hops were top tier. So why Penny?? When penny was down 0-2 to the Miami heat in a 5 game series, he put up 41, 42 and a losing 31 points. Penny was more all around than T-Mac and while people mention TMac choked in the playoffs, Penny played his best in the playoffs. Penny would give it to the top defenders like jordan and pippen. Penny was like lebron without the muscles and though he was a great athlete he wasnt the freak lbj was. Here are some bold statements Healthy Penny > CP3. TMac > KD. Penny > TMac. If it wasnt for injury Penny woulda been an all time great. I agree both are slightly below Lebron and Kobe at full potential.
