Andrew Wiggins a Team USA hopeful?

Even though Andrew Wiggins has represented Team Canada in the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championships, the 2012 FIBA U18 Americas Championship and in the 2012 and 2013 Nike Hoop Summits, one thing that many don't know is that his father Mitchell Wiggins is a native of North Carolina. Which makes Andrew Wiggins eligible to play for a Team USA in the future. The most notable player to ever wear a USA uniform who neither was born or raised in the states was Hakeem Olajuwon, the native of Nigeria who played for USA in '96 Olympics. I know the chances are he will prefer to represent his home country of Canada and the rule is once you play for one countries' Senior National Team you can never play for another's which is the reason why Kyrie Irving turned down his offer to play for Austrialia in last summer's Olympics. But don't rule out Andrew Wiggins to represent the US in 2016 or 2020.

Wiggins rep Canada hard..they

Wiggins rep Canada hard..they have a ton of talent coming out of Canada. I don't see him playing for USA. Team Canada will be respected in the future with the talent pool they have.

I hope Wiggins plays for us

I hope Wiggins plays for us in Rio.

If LeBron plays too then we can go with D Rose, Kyrie Irving, Westbrook, Steph Curry, Harden, Andrew Wiggins, LeBron, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, Anthony Davis, and Kevin Love.

That's a TEAM!

The right thing

the right thing is that Wiggins plays for Canada. He is canadian and USA do not need to grab a foreign player. They are always the leading nation in basketball even if they lose a game. We have to hope that Canada will be a strong opponent for US Team, this is the sense and the beauty of "sport".

If player played for U-18

If player played for U-18 national team and older in ofical FIBA championship he can only change his basketball citizenship only if all 3 parts agree. In this case Canadian basketball federation, USA basketball federation and FIBA would all have to agree so he could change his basketball citizenship

Not true at all. That's

Not true at all. That's supposed to be the rule. We know however that rule is a total fantasy. See Turkish national team for example.

If he played for team USA

He wouldn't be able to come home... Think about the reception Vince, T mac or Bosh receive every time they come to the ACC, now multiply that by 100. But he won't, he's known those guys that are gonna be on the Canadian team since he was a youth growing up. His highschool team has 3 other Canadans on it, so I think it's pretty clear where his loyalties are.

"the rule is once you play

"the rule is once you play for one countries' Senior National Team you can never play for another's"

That's not true. Actually, guys do it all the time. You just have to get a letter of clearance from your federation and you can switch anytime you want to, if you are eligible to play for another country.

And USA is very big on using foreign born players in their national team.....

Rony Seikaly
Steve Kerr
Patrick Ewing
Hakeem Olajuwon
Dominique Wilkins
Kyrie Irving

etc.

Of course, this is fine, provided they have a legit reason to play for USA. In the cases of Rony Seikaly (Greek) and Hakeem Olajuwon (Nigerian) USA simply stole those players from other federations.

So it's not like they have not done this before. Remember, the whole "naturalized players" rule in FIBA was created simply for the sole reason of allowing Team USA to use naturalized players. Team USA was the one that started all of that and demanded FIBA allow it in the first place.

So it would not surprise me one bit if USA did take Wiggins from Canada. They took Seikaly from Greece and Hakeem from Nigeria.

Who cares about nationalism.

Who cares about nationalism. I would rather watch great basketball. I dont care if every good player in America wanted to play for another country. I love watching the FIFA World Cup because I love the German national team, yet I have no connection to germany. The players have to chose which country they want to play for, nobody forces them to chose. JR Holden played for russia and yet he had no connections to russia other than he played club ball there. Patrick Ewing never would have played basketball had he not moved here form Jamaica, and the USA is the reason why he had the opportunity to achieve his dreams. Stop making everything about race and nationality, to me I never care about those when I root for teams and players.

BTW, Mitchell Wiggins played

Mitchell Wiggins played a long time in the Greek League back in the 90s. He was a very popular player there.

Consider this..........Andrew Wiggins was supposed to be born in Greece, as his father and mother were living there at the time for like 5 years. But right before he was born, they went to Canada (Andrew's wife is Canadian) for him to be born in Canada.

They would get automatic US citizenship for him since his father is American, and so they wanted that Canadian birth also.

So the thing is...........and Canadians will not like this, but he was born in Canada for that reason. His family was living in Greece that whole time and even quite a while after he was born.

That's why they left Greece for him to be born, otherwise he would have been born in Greece. So really, I don't think they ever had any real intention of him ever playing for Canada to begin with. It just sort of happened that way.

Wig

Andrew Wiggins... EVERY college wanted him.... 1/3 of the NBA is tanking to get him... now he has 3 different COUNTRIES recruiting him?

Honestly, how can this kid possibly live up to all this hype? He has to be like "MJ in Space Jam level of dominance" just to meet all these expectations...
