I just love this kid. I think he has less holes in his game then just about any other big man in the draft. He's just so solid in all areas, and doesn't come with any red flags. I view his age as a strength rather then a liability. I think he has the maturity to contribute right away.

Probably alone on an island...

I'm a big Jazz fan

I am slightly higher on Aldrich and Monroe at this point, but Udoh has kind of been my dark horse hopeful. He would provide some interior defense the Jazz need and might just turn out to be a solid player. So, if those two are off the board and nobody else pops up I think is a better option, you won't be alone.

I personally like whiteside

Udoh's age would be a good thing his rookie year because he will be able to contribute right away. The question is how high is his ceiling. Im not going to be mad if they draft him.. He's a athletic big who blocks shots something we dont have. I'd like to see us take Cole Aldrich instead if he still there. I also like whiteside because he's a legit 7 footer with big potential. But also big risk. We will know more about him after they work him out. I would be happy with all 3.

I'm a Jazz fan too... which

I'm a Jazz fan too... which obviously there are lots of considering the 20 plus threads on the Jazz in the last 2 weeks.

Every year the Jazz (like probably every other team) creates a best available list. Then, unless a trade can be worked out, they draft the best player available. So, the Jazz WILL get one of their top 9 guys. If I'm the Jazz my list goes like this:

Wall
Turner
Cousins
Wesley Johnson
Monroe
Favors
Udoh
Patterson
Aldrich

and then you just pick the highest one that's still available. Most Jazz fans that look at this list would kill me for putting Aldrich 9th, but I really can't stand the thought of picking a guy with the 9th overall selection to be our franchise center who is (gulp) 6 foot 9. I know he has a 7 foot 4 wingspan, but he doens't have the flexibility to be a PF, and since we've lost three straight years to a team that is longer than us, the idea that we put our faith in a 6-9 center really doesn't make me feel good.

Monroe and Udoh on the other hand have some defensive skills that we need out of our bigs, but they can play the 4 (and be pretty long at the 4 spot).

Patterson would provide, in my opinion, the best immediate replacement for Booz, and, also in my opinion, would really impress Sloan with his tenacity and hustle. He and Millsap in te front court together would make for a KILLER small ball lineup, and if we ever get that great center we're waiting for, he'd be a great third guy in the bigs rotation.

Cody, why do you want another

Cody, why do you want another center? I know Whiteside's upside is INSANE, but we already are trying to develop KK, Fes, and Tomic.... so is it really in our best interest to go in that direction again?

Because they all suck. fes is

Because they all suck. fes is garbage did you see him in the playoffs? He has potential with his size but nothing like whitside does. KK i had hope for but for some reason doesnt play hard when we does get time. And who's ever even heard of that other dude? Im sure we wont keep 3 seven footers around who cant play. Okur is in his final year of his contract. I think hes a nice player, but not a true center. If we draft whiteside bring him off the bench is rookie year behind memo he would give us energy, length, and shot blocking something we don't have. At the worst we would be getting a Tyson Chandler who could get 12, 9, 3, after he develops and puts on some pounds. Hes a freshman who averaged over 5 blocks a game. He could pay off big down the road.

I'm just thinking...

Monroe and Aldrich will probably be gone before the Jazz pick. I like players who are versatile, and can play more then one position. Aldrich just seem like a guy who is so limited in what he can bring to the table. Monroe isn't the defensive force Udoh is at this point.

I like Patterson, but getting "smaller" isn't going to help us beat teams like the Lakers. He reminds me of Millsap, which I like, but he doesn't really give us a new look we don't already have. What is the deal on Tomic anyway? Will he play for the Jazz in this lifetime?

Anybody have any links that show this kid play at all?

Cody, check this out for

Cody, check this out for some info on Tomic

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700027149/Utah-Jazz-draftee-Ante-Tomi...

I agree that Whiteside has CRAZY potential, but highlight reals don't show everything. All the experts question his character and motor. Yes, I agree he's athletic and tall.... but so was Mohammed Saer Sene in the 2006 draft.... and where is he now?

Unfortunately, the only center in this draft that could really help the Jazz will be gone in the top 4 and that is Demarcus Cousins.

Interesting

Interesting. He wont play for us for at least a year though, and we don't know how affective he will be in the NBA. He sounds like he could be good. I still think whiteside has the potential to develop into a huge defensive presence which is something we desperately need, interior defense. Sene was the 12 pick a couple years ago and was a bust but he never played college ball and was in a very weak draft, that's why he went so high that year. 5 blocks a game is no fluke especially for a freshman. They have Udoh going 8th on epsn mock draft. I like both players im just leaning towards whiteside because of his length, shot blocking, and youth.

Cool. I don't disagree. I'm

Cool. I don't disagree. I'm just not sure it would be best to put our second ighest draft pick in the last 25 years towards a "project" but I definitly see the Chandler comparison.

For a previous poster, here are some highlights om Tomic. Dude is skinny... but also 7 foot 2 with a guards skillset. Great free throw shooter too. When you watch him think about Gasol (obviosously he's not as good, but think about it). Keep in mind the clip shows his highlights and low lights and is against one of the best teams in all of Europe.

The Jazz are usually not on

The Jazz are usually not on the lottery, if im a GM or Coach of the Jazz I will try to make this #9 pick count as much as possible. Even if it means gambling on talented prospects such as Hassan Whiteside. They should take advantage of it because this is the highest their going to pick at least in the next 5 years (as long as Darren Williams is at the point, they will stay a playoff team). They should go for upside, instead of polish. Just roll the dice.

I agree. And His Upside is

I agree. And His Upside is one of the highest in the draft. Hes a Legit 7 foot Freshmen. Ya he could be a total bust like Steven Hunter or Sene. But if he stays healthy and works hard he could be the presence in the middle that we totally lack on D. I think theirs is a reason people are pretty high on this guy. He has some stuff to prove but if he lives up to the hype the can be really good.

i'd be very happy if Utah

i'd be very happy if Utah wound up with Udoh...they don't have a defensive presence in the post, and if he could bulk up he'd be able to get in there right away

i'm not as worried about his upside, as he's made CRAZY strides since he was at michigan...plus, whiteside is going to be 21 in a month, so it's not like he's that much younger...(i do like the fact that whiteside blocked 5 shots per game and only fouled out once though...that's ridiculous)

@ parkerj

Its not about age between Whiteside and Udoh, its about what they can become if they max out their tools. Whiteside is 7'0 with 7'7 WINGSPAN, compare to Udoh who is 6'9-6'10 with 7'4 wingspan, and the the fact that Whiteside is taller and MORE ATHLETIC than Udoh. Whiteside has ALOT more tools, forget the age. Udoh is a very nice prospect, but we've seen guys like him in the draft every year, you dont however see a guy like Whiteside that often come in the draft with his combination of length and athletcism and his offense is not that far behind from his defensive skills, Whiteside is a capable offensive player already averaging 13PPG in only 26 minutes per game. Hes just flat out scary if he full fills his upside.

lots of prospects

the Jazz have a lot of options with the 9th pick. Monroe, Aldrich, Udoh, Whiteside all have their pros and cons. Although a big man is needed I think drafting Luke Babbit would be good as well. Babbit is nearly 6-9 and is a tough and gritty player with offensive skill. Playing at Nevada not a lot of people saw him play but this guy has some underrated skills. Kirilenko is in his last year of his contract and is getting injured too often now, CJ Miles is undersized for the 3 and would be a better backup. We got a month to speculate about this but it's not often a good team is picking in the top 10. If the Jazz get this pick right than they can start getting to that next level.

I have the jazz drafting Udoh

I have the jazz drafting Udoh in my Mock. So far my draftboard for the Jazz looks like this. Just so you know I only put the players that will most likely be around when we are on the clock. So you wont see players like Turner, Wall, or Cousins on my draftboard.
(The asterisk are the ones that will most likely be our draft pick)
Aminu
Aldrich
Udoh*
Babbit*
Davis
Whiteside

If we end up trading up, then my draftboard looks like this
Turner, Wall, Johnson*, Favors, Cousins, Monroe (I think Johnson is a definite possibility)

I'll say it again. Whiteside

I'll say it again. Whiteside is a sleeper just like Andrew Bymun was. He Doesn't have the size of Bymun but has the body frame to put on major weight and has great length. Everyone including Kobe didn't like Bymun and thought it was a waste of the tenth pick. Look hows he has devolved. True seven footers with whitesides Defense and potential don't come around often. I'm not saying Edoh wouldn't be a good pick up. He can play good D also but we dont need another young PF when we have Millsap who is only 25. Okur is close to 30 and doesn't bring an inside presence that we need. And when he leaves or goes down hill what do we do? Have two good Power forwards and play one as an undersized Center. That worked out well this year. Two years down the road when we have a true center playing huge D we'll be happy we took him.

I am not sure on Whiteside...

The scouts must be seeing certain aspects of Whiteside's game that they aren't very high on. I totally agree on his off the charts potential, but don't you think if anybody thought he really had even the SLIGHTEST chance to be an OUTSTANDING player, that he would be being talked about right now as a top five/seven pick (especially with the uncertainty surrounding Cousins, and the fact that Monroe doesn't exactly look like a franchise type player)??

It will be interesting to see if his stock rises as the draft approaches. If it doesn't, I'll become very suspect of drafting him. Wouldn't it be interesting if Whitesides stock rose, and Cousins fell. Maybe Cousins will become available to the Jazz at nine. But knowing the way the Jazz hold "character" in such high regard, however, even if Cousins fell down to them, they would probably not draft him. That's when Jazz fans all over the country would throw something large and heavy at their TV, burn all their Jazz merchandise, and go out and buy Lakers gear.

Damn...Tomic really looks like a player

the27guy: Thanks for the youtube highlights of Tomic.

He really looks like a player to me. I hope we can bring this kid over soon. He looks better then anyone we might get with the ninth pick in this draft. Not to jump the gun, but the comparions of his game with those of Pau Gasol are legit. Very similar style, body type, height, skill set, etc...

We dont have time to develop Whiteside

DWill wants us to be competative and with Whiteside we just are going to be there right away. I dont think Dwill wants to waste his prime waiting for a center. From what I have heard TOmic is the real deal. Our front court of

Milsap-Udoh-trade KK for a hustle 4
Tomic-Okur-Fes

That isnt bad

but if we take Whiteside

all of the sudden if we retain Okur our front line of the future is heavy on centers with no PF. This is the best PF draft in a long time. Get Monroe, Patterson, or Udoh please

We dont want a Sene or another Ostertag.

I agree...after seeing the highlight of Tomic

We definitely don't need to draft a center. That spot is filled. Fes and KK are on the way out when this kid arrives, or will be delegated too third string. A shot blocking power forward like Udoh would be the perfect compliment to split time with Millsap. Patterson wouldn't be a bad fit either, but we just need the length and shotblocking so desperately, and Udoh can provide that in spades. If Okur can eventually return to full strength, we will have a frontline that could possibly compete with the Lakers and other taller teams.

It's funny how we are all talking as if Boozer is already gone. There is still a chance he comes back.

Id like 4

them to draft udoh but wat i really want is 4 the jazz to draft a player that can help them be sumthing better than wat they had last year. Meaning more length or height. thats wat seems 2 always kill the jazz they get beat by bigger teams like the lakers

IF booz comes back, we even more need long defense...

I think if booz comes back even more we need size. I think Udoh is long enough to play 4-5. What we can't have is another 6-7 guy playing power forward.
I like Udoh, he might be the best for us. I don't know if Monroe or Adrich have enough athleticism to help on defense like they did in collage. I don't agree with the Sene/Whiteside comparison. Wasn't whiteside's dad a pro athlete? If we think we are getting Booz back, then I think we take a chance on Whiteside to give us defensive help now. If we think we aren't going to sign booze, we go for a more polished defender like Udoh.
Heck, this is a great draft, Aldrich, Monroe, Udoh, Whiteside would all be great to get. I'm just scared that the Jazz brass actually believe they've got bigs in Fes and KK, and they just need some more "experience". If that is the case, we are in trouble.

On Tomic, he does look good but he is at least a season away. No chance of him coming this year per the desnews article. So maybe the jazz brass have that in mind and won't mind getting patterson (undersized powerforward in my mind, millsap the second if you will).

okur is a great 4.

I think Okur is actually a better 4 than a 5. He does better with little bit shorter guys where he can get his shot off and he has good foot speed to keep up with people. What he doesn't do great with is people taller (Pau). Though I will say a couple of years ago he did great on Yao. Of course that's when Andre got about 4 blocks on Yao from weak side help.

AK, Okur and Millsap are all natural 4's in my mind.
Miles, Korver (if we keep him), Matthrews are 2's.
Fes and KK are terrible and they are natural centers, though KK may be a more natural 4, but I'm not really counting on him anyways.
DWill and anyone else have the point. I like Price and Gains was a great find, I say we keep him!

With that, we have no 3, and no good 5s. Those are our needs. Tomic can be the 5 but that is a year out, at least. He may not ever want to come.

I'm happy with drafting long 4's and have them play center (6'10" and above). But we have to do something about the 3 position too...

In the past years while boozer has been hurt, Andre and Okur have played great. It'lll be interesting to see if they can come off the injuries to pick up the slack.

just watched the highlights of whiteside again

I know it was the highlights of his year but i was impressed with his game. Seemed very well rounded. Iremember watching highlights of Sene a couple of years back and there is no comparison. Whiteside was hitting 3's, hook shots, fallaways, offside and onside blocks, etc. He is no Sene. He has tons more skills.

Also, Babbit seems exactly the guy the jazz don't need unless he drops to the second round. His rap is a great scorer but bad on defense. We don't need another 4 that is bad on defense. He wouldn't even be on my board. Here is my board.
Turner
Wall
Cousins
Johnson
Aminu
Monroe
Udoh
Whiteside
Aldrich
