How is it going, forum?  It has been a long time since I have posted any forum topics on nbadraft.net due to a hefty schedule, but I have been watching a ton of basketball, both NBA and college.  Today, I wanted to create a forum talking about some potential leaders for the end of the year awards, and I would like to go in depth with some NBA discussions.

Currently, these are my top 5 potential MVP candidates:

    5. Blake Griffin (PF, Los Angeles Clippers) – Blake Griffin has had a marvelous season for the Los Angeles Clippers, proving to everyone that he is more than just a high-flying dunker.  Chris Paul had an amazing start to the season, averaging over 20 points and around 11 assists per game, but he has missed a nice chunk of games, so I gave the advantage to his much deserving teammate, Blake Griffin.

Blake Griffin is having one of his most – if not his most successful season as a professional basketball player, and he is finally living up to his full potential.  Griffin is scoring in many ways, adding a decently reliable jump shot and a respectable post game to help aid the Clippers during CP3’s absence.  He is carrying his squad on his back, and both his teammates and Doc Rivers have all of the faith in the world in this guy.  It has been a marvelous season, and it has been fun to watch this guy play.

Blake is currently playing 35 MPG, and he is averaging a very respectable 24.2 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 3.5 APG, 1.2 SPG, and 0.6 BPG while shooting 54% from the floor, and a career high of 71% from the free throw line.  Remember, his free throw game was one of the weakest parts of his game, and he has hit it with a lot of consistency this season, something you can respect of a big in today’s NBA.

    4. Lamarcus Aldridge (PF, Portland Trail Blazers) – Wow.  The Portland Trail Blazers sure came out of nowhere to take the NBA by storm at the start of the season.  They are the highest scoring offense in the league, being led by the likes of Aldridge and 2nd-year guard Damian Lillard.  The team has cooled off from their hot start at the beginning of the season, but they are still exceeding all of their expectations, and are holding on to the 5th seed in the West with a 36-17 record.

Aldridge has always played very good basketball in the NBA, but he took the NBA by storm this season by being one of the most dominate inside-outside precense.  He has a very polished post game with a handful of skilled moved that gives him a better opportunity to score over and around his defenders.  He is hitting his coveted mid-range jumper with ease this season, proving that he isn’t just a one-demensional scorer.  He can do it from almost anywhere, and he is learning to expand his range.

This season, Aldridge has been an absolute monster.  At the break, he is averaging 23.9 PPG, 11.4 RPG, 2.4 APG, 0.8 SPG, 1 BPG on 46.6% from the field, and 82.1% from the charity stripe.  He is scoring from everywhere other than downtown with a ton of consistency, and he is even playing better defense this season, propelling the Trail Blazers to an outstanding first half.  If he can continue to produce and the Blazers continue to win in the second half of the season, watch out world.

    3. Paul George (SF, Indiana Pacers) – It’s amazing that the superstar of the East’s top team is only 3rd on this list, but that is what happenes whenever their are two alpha dogs in the league right now.  Nonetheless, Paul George has had an outstanding season and should be credited for a majority of the success that the Indiana Pacers are experiencing this season.  As I said before, the Indiana Pacers lead the East at the break with a 40-12 record, and Paul George’s defensive precense and offensive emergence has propelled this squad to experience a ton of success.

George has always been known as a dominate athlete and a tremendous defensive presence, but his outstanding play on offense and as a scorer and play-maker for the Pacers is what really is contributing to the success that the Pacers are experiencing.  At 40-12, Frank Vogel’s tough, grity team is setting themselves up for home court advantage in the NBA playoffs, which may be exactly what they need to knock off the two-time defending NBA Champions, the Miami Heat.

This season, George is averaging 20.8 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 3.4 APG, 1.8 SPG, and shooting 44% from the floor, 37% from deep, and 85.6% from the free throw line.  He is the best player on the best team in the Eastern Conference, and have improved tremendously this season.  He plays incredible on-ball and perimeter defense, and is the energy spark that has egnited the fire behind the Indiana Pacers.

    2. LeBron James (SF, Miami Heat) – Even though LeBron James is undountedly the best player in the game today, he isn’t playing quite as well as another player on this list, a pretty obvious choice to say the least.

The Heat are yet again having a dynamite season, all because of the stardom of LeBron James.  Dwayne Wade has been injured on and off all season long for Miami, and Chris Bosh has played well, yet has been inconsistent for the defending champion Heat.  LeBron James is quietly having a very solid season, but he just hasn’t captured headlines like he has in the previous two seasons, thus allowing him to slip to #2 in MY MVP talk.

Lebron is averaging 26.5 PPG, 7 RPG, 6.6 APG, and 1.5 SPG on 57% from the field, 37% from deep, and 75% from the free throw line.  These are truly respectable numbers for an NBA Superstar, and these are without a doubt MVP worthy, especially from a player that has led his team to a 37-14 record at the break.  However, like I said before and as most of you know, there is one player that has went far and beyond what was expected from him, but what was needed from him for his team to be successful.  If that guy keeps up his production, he could very well dethrone LeBron James as the 2-time reigning MVP.

    1. Kevin Durant (SF, Oklahoma City Thunder) – As if we all didn’t see this coming.  Kevin Durant has been absolute money for the Thunder who have been without their All-Star guard Russell Westbrook for a majority of the season.  For a young, unexperienced squad, Durant has taken this team, put it on his back, and just ran with it.  The Thunder currently have the most wins in the league (43) and are just tearing up a very top-heavy Western Conference.

Durant is doing it from everywhere this season.  He has been so quick and explosing that he can take his oppenent off of the dribble and finish with fluency above the rim.  He can pull up from anywhere and knock it down, and he has such long arms that he has been able to shoot over his defenders with absolute ease and efficiency.  He has been a stud, and everybody in the NBA knows it.  He has also become a better rebounder and a better passer, upping his rebound and assists totals for this season as well.  One of his most improved areas is his defensive mechanics, and he is playing much better on-ball defense than he has shown in year’s past, and that is exactly why he is currently at the top of my MVP leaderboard.

Kevin Durant is averaging an astonishing 31.5 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 5.5 APG, 1.5 SPG, and 0.8 BPG while shooting 51% from the floor, 41% from downtown, and 88% from the free throw line.  Those are incredible numbers for a player to average in a season, and this could very well go down as one of the best seasons ever played by an individual player in NBA history.

Other leading candidates (no order): Chris Paul, James Harden, Damian Lillard, Stephen Curry.
