sammybuckeye13ParticipantIn ESPN’s 5-on-5 for who should be All-NBA 1st team, when it came to C, three said Gasol and two said Duncan.I understand Marc Gasol has had a phenomenal year and effectively made the $18M Gay expendable, but really, there should not be a debate here. When you consider that Duncan’s numbers are far superior to Gasol’s and he plays 9 less minutes a game, their effectiveness this year really comes into focus. Here are their numbers per 36 minutes:
Duncan: 21.2 PPG 11.8 RPG 3.2 APG 3.2 BPG 50% FG 81.2% FT
Gasol: 14.6 PPG 8 RPG 4.1 APG 1.8 BPG 49% FG 85% FT
Again, Gasol has been fantastic this year and I know he has to shoulder more of a load than Duncan, thus more minutes, but given that Duncan is playing as well as ever and the Spurs are fighting for the top spot in the West, I don’t really see a debate here.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantBut…. Gasol is also in the running for Defensive Player of the Year. Plus you can’t just simulate 9 more minutes a game because if the great Timmy played them he would be on the shelf. Not to mention that Gasol doesn’t have Splitter behind him who is probably a top 15 center.

mini_marzParticipantPersonally i would choose gasol. He anchors the best defense in the NBA and also at times they run their offense through him inn the high post. Not to say Duncan isn’t also deserving but IMHO I would give it to gasol

SnowtaParticipantEven with their actual minutes Timmy’s averaging over 3 pts, 2 rebs, and 1 block more than Gasol and that’s in 5 less mins per game. If anything I think the fact that he is doing all of that in around 30 mins/game shows just how good he’s been.

omphalosParticipantMan, this topic has made me realise how up in the air a LOT of the major awards are this season. Outside of MVP and ROY there is no clear frontrunner for MANY awards.
First team All-NBA; CP3, Kobe, Lebron, Durant, ?
Second team All-NBA; I have no idea, Melo is in there and seemingly either Gasol or Duncan.DPOY? No idea. Nobody has really stood out to me defensively.
6th Man: Probably JR, but he doesn’t seem as convincing a winner as Harden was last year.
MIP: Harden? Who knows, nobody made major strides IMO.
There are plenty of worth candidates, but a definite lack of consensus aside from the staple 4 players in First Team All-NBA.

I hear you. As far as the All-NBA second team goes, Russell Westbrook, Tony Parker, James Harden. Dwyane Wade and Stephen Curry could all make a case, so that means one of them isn’t even going to make the third team.
The All-NBA 3rd team center could be quite interesting too. Dwight Howard for all his flaws is still averaging 16.9 PPG on 58 FG%, 12.3 RPG and 2.4 BPG.
But Al Horford is putting up 17.4 PPG on 54.3 FG%, 10.2 RPG and 3.2 APG while being the most valuable player on a Hawks team that has played well.
While Brook Lopez is putting up 19.5 PPG, 6.9 RPG and 2.1 BPG in just 30.6 MPG for a whopping PER of 24.8.

aamir543ParticipantMarc has been great, but you have to give it to Timmy, too good not to give it to him, he’s also the DPOY, it’s hard to imagine that 2 years ago he made the All-Star game as a lifetime achievement award, and now he has a good chance to be on the first team and the DPOY.

Taylor Gang MikeParticipantBrook Lopez? he has been playing great

Bird_YearsParticipantI think Omer Asik should get some consideration for Most Improved, he’s averaging 10.2 points and 11.7 boards, vast improvements from 3.1 and 5.3 last year and he’s arguably the 2nd biggest reason why the rockets out-performed everybody’s expectations

HitsterParticipantMIP – James Harden – really stepped up and has become an All Star and a future franchise player.
DPOY – Tim Duncan – he has played his best for maybe 5 or 6 years and has the stats edge on Marc Gasol.
6th Man – J.R Smith – has become an impact player to back up Melo’s heroics and helped make the Knicks relevant again.
MVP – LeBron James – I did question LeBron getting a 3rd MVP award last year but this year it is clear cut, best player in the world.
Coach of the Year – George Karl – okay other coaches have better records and I considered Coach Thibs after getting a winning season minus D-Rose. But Coach Karl has got over 50 wins with a team minus a true star and has he has never won it before then maybe his overall career record swings it for him.

SDEParticipantIt looks like melo will be second behind lebron for MVP, the scoring title and yall think he not goin make first team all nba. if he dont make the first team the nba should feel ashamed.
Kevin Durant should get a spot too but he confuse me sometime. Everybody on TV and radio want him to take the team over but he can’t because Westbrook feel he’s just as good as KD.
back on topic give it to Duncan

————————————————————————————————————————————————–Melo is a great player, unfortunately he happens to play in an era where the 2 best players in the world are also small forwards. People really seem to be underappreciating the season KD is having. He’s shooting 50-40-90! He has 28.1 PPG, 7.9 RPG (second in the league among non PF/C), 4.6 APG (fourth in the league among non guards) 1.4 SPG and 1.3 SPG for a team that’s probably going to finish with 60+ wins and the top seed in the Western Conference. In many years he would be the hands down MVP. There is no reason he and Lebron shouldn’t be the 2 forwards on the First Team.
Melo can have his scoring title though.

Ghost01ParticipantMaybe I’m in the minority, but I’d actually take James Harden as the other guard with Kobe. Just think he’s been better than CP3 and Westbrook this year. Obviously LBJ and Durant are no brainers, and yes I would have Duncan at center.
2nd team I’d go CP3, Westbrook, Melo, Griffin, and M Gasol
I was favoring Noah for DPOY, but he’s missed a lot of games lately so maybe it is Gasol.
6th man I feel like JR Smith has pulled away this last month.
Rookie Damian Lillard pulled away in November
MIP hmm… I think Asik is in the conversation, Tiago Splitter, Jimmy Butler, Larry Sanders, but yeah I’m really not finding a definite name.
COY is really hard. I agree with Karl. But Poppovich, Thibadeau, Hollins, Spoelstra, and Mike Woodson have all been great.
And MVP…well duh.

SDEParticipantOnly time i worry about stats is in math class.
When matched up one on one Melo destroys KD (check the last game they played). I respect Lebron and KD they are top five players in this game and are great.
But they get to play one on one basketball all game. They have other superstars on their team(Wade/RW) They numbers should look incredible. Melo don’t have that luxury. When played 1 on1 Melo game look like it does since he came back from injury.0 - AuthorPosts
