HaleParticipantWhy is Austin Rivers on the 1st team? He’s good, but come on. He’s tied for 7th in scoring but what else has he done? He even got more votes then Barnes, why?

Johnny ChillHe carried the 2nd place Duke team on offense, improved his perimiter defense, and made the most memorable shot in the biggest rivarly this season, he was also named ACC player of the week 2 twice. Thats all he’s done.

Johnny ChillThe question is why is Barnes on the 1st team over Marshall?
Marshall leads the ACC in assist and is the most important player on the team.
Barnes is the 3rd option on the team.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantY2G, I haven’t really been watching college ball this season but who’s frontcourt is better, Kentucky or UNC? Who has the best frontcourt in the league?

HaleParticipantHe’s carried Duke? They have 3 other guys averaging 11 or more ppg and another guy with 9. Duke is a balanced team, they aren’t relying on one guy. His perimeter D may have him improved but I don’t see him locking anybody up. He made the most memorable shot of the year…didn’t know that made you a first team AA. He’s good, but he got on the list because of his hype and his name.

HaleParticipantYou think Rivers is more deserving then Barnes?

HaleParticipantBetween Davis, MKG and T-Jones vs. Barnes, Zeller, Henson? You could make a case for either. They are probably 1a and 1b. If I had to pick I’d probably go Kentucky because Davis is a lot better then he was when they played last time.

Johnny ChillYes, Rivers carried Duke on offense. If your just looking at stats, then you wont see the value and everything he had to do for Duke. River’s pretty much had to score, handle the ball, create offense, and get Duke out of the weeds when the clock was running out.
The best player on the 2nd best team is gonna get a lot of love.
I dont know what kinda hype your talking about, but he has proved his value in games.
And yes, Rivers will be remembered forever, because his shot against UNC will be replayed over and over and over for the next hundred years.

HaleParticipantHe was the most hyped guy in his class, that’s what I’m talking about. He’s good, of course. But carrying Duke? They don’t rely on a single player. He isn’t creating offense too well because he barely averages two assists per game. I get it, he’s probably the best player on Duke. But I don’t believe he should be a 1st Team guy. All he really does is score, he’s not a great passer and he’s not a great defender. I want to here your argument for him over Barnes…Barnes plays four less minutes, shoots better percentages across the board and still averages more points. He’s pretty good for a 3rd option.

Johnny ChillHarrison Barnes was named National Pre-Season Player of the Year as a incoming freshman. He wasnt even in the honable menton of the ACC.
Rivers is more valuable to Duke than Barnes is to UNC.
Take Barnes out of UNC’s lineup, put in Hairson. Hairson becomes the 4th-5th option offense instead of the 3rd option that Barnes was. UNC doesnt miss a beat, because of Marshall running the point and Zeller and Henson in the post.
Take Rivers out of Duke’s lineup, put in Dawkins. Duke now has nobody take can create their own offense with consistancy. Rivers is Duke’s 1st option and last option on offense.
Side note: The funniest thing about the All ACC 1st team is that Rivers got more votes than Barnes, when Barnes was names Pre-Season ACC Player of the year.

HaleParticipantYes, and that’s a joke. Barnes is easily the better player. How is that fair to say he means more? Just because UNC has the better team Barnes gets punished? That’s the lame excuse people used for Aaron Rodgers this year…oh his WR’s are too good, oh Matt Flynn is too good. How about if you switched them instead. Duke probably gets better with Barnes.

Johnny ChillAre you talking about hype, being a better player, having more value, All ACC? Seems like your jumping around a bit.
0 - Posted on: Mon, 03/05/2012 - 12:14pm #644125
HaleParticipantBarnes is a better player, and should’ve gotten more votes for All ACC. Rivers may be more valuable, but that’s only because UNC is better. Barnes had hype yes (especially last year), but he earned his spot on the All ACC team, where I feel Rivers did not.

Johnny ChillI was surprised Rivers was All ACC 1st team too, but he still went out earned it with his play, not hype. The hype with Rivers is gone, he’s played up to his hype, abilites and continue to improve. Well deserves recogition.
Without Rivers, Duke is probably a 3 – 4th place team in the ACC and UNC would have won both games against them.

rickybobbyParticipantRivers shouldn’t’ be 1st team yea he’s good but that spot should have been Marshalls or Stoglins. And the fact that you think Barnes is the teams 3rd options and still leads the team and scoring 3rd in conference and averages more than Rivers only makes Rivers getting more votes than Barnes even more stupid. I thought Marshall or Stoglin was a shoe in for a spot on first team but the fact that neither made it is bogus.

HaleParticipantWhy would I be mad? I just don’t feel like he deserved it. I think there were better options, like Marshall. But oh well, can’t do anything about it now. I’m heading downtown so I’ll check back on this thread later tonight.

Mr. 19134ParticipantI’m happy Marshall didn’t make 1st team, while he is the catalyst of the UNC team it’s hard to put a guy on the 1st team when he doesn’t average double digits in any category. And he is a great passer, but dude is passing to 3 First Team All ACC Members and I think Zeller should win player of the year in the ACC.
It just seems like a pass first PG should be averaging gaudy assists numbers on that Carolina team in that system.

HandDownManDown13ParticipantNaw man, Rivers deserves first team. He’s by far the most important player on the 2nd best team. As far as how much he means to Duke, I’d say it’s more than Barnes to UNC. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating on Barnes here, it’s just that Marshall is irreplaceable for them, and Zeller had an absolutely dominant year. Duke leans on Rivers during big games more than UNC does with Barnes. the stats are a bit misleading, Rivers has been very good and Duke is at their best when he gets a lot of touches.
All in all, I’d probably switch Marshall and Barnes. It’s also really nice to see Kenny Kadji get some love. When I used to work out at IMG in Bradenton FL, I got to see him torch some lower level NBA players (Jared Jefferies, Turiaf, Zabian Dowdell) as a HS junior. Nice to see that his back injury hasn’t killed his career.
