SwatLakeCityParticipantI don’t watch college games too often mostly NBA but today I am making an exception because a draft prospect that I really want to come to Utah is playing against top competition. (Alec Burks)
How do you guys think he’ll do today against top ranked Kansas?
What’s your comparison for him.
Would he work in Utah or is there someone else Utah should shoot for instead?
My answers: Kansas wins, but Burks leads Colorado in scoring with like 20 some points. 6 boards, and 4 assists. He will give Kansas problems but in the Kansas has just too much weapons. But the key is Burks does not back down against top competition and plays great.
My Comparison is Brandon Roy.
Would he work for Utah? yes absolutely yes. Plays the 2 guard which is what needs desperately . He can start and be Utah’s 2nd option (Unless Dwill leaves then he’s the 1st option) Also drafting him would allow CJ and Raja to come off the bench. I think Utah will really benefit with those 2 on the bench. Utah really needs a 2nd option and Alec Burks is perfect for the role.
just imagine this guy next Dwill. He might be enough to convince Dwill to stay but if not then he can become the #1 option and Utah will be like Portland. Only problem is if Dwill does leave, (which I’m starting to think that he will because it doesn’t appear Utah can build around him and he doesn’t look too happy out there) can Utah still find a quality PG to take him place? I sure hope so because with out a decent PG (Not Earl Watson) all my hopes for this team will go down the drain.

Hi its BenParticipantHe won’t be the first option in his rookie year or on a championship team unless he develops a consistent jumpshot. Is he athletic? Yes. Does he have ideal 2-guard size? Yes. He could be a first option a couple years from now on a decent team but IMO he cant be a first option on a championship contender. More like 2nd or 3rd option..

JoeWolf1Burks is a very good slasher and a guy who can flat out get to the line, but he’s an average outside shooter at best. KU’s guards aren’t very tall so he’ll have the advantage shooting and laying it up over them, but if KU’s help side D does their job he’ll have to finish over some big guys around the rim. Burks will get 20 ( he always does ) and I suspect he’ll rebound well over KU, but they are a much better team and playing at home after an emotional loss. I predict 20+ for Burks, but with a poor shooting percentage and a lot of trips to the line. He’s not a play maker either and you know he’ll have to step up his offense to keep CU in it so I’d expect 0-2 assists this game.

SwatLakeCityParticipant@Smelling DRoses: I realize that Burks is not a first option for a championship team. I never said he was. Utah is far away from winning a championship. If Dwill stays and Utah selects Burks then Burks will be the second option which is what Utah really needs. But if Dwill leaves (which is what I am expecting) he will do as a first option until Utah gets a true first option which probably wont happen until the 2012 draft or the offseason of that year. Look at Portland, their first option is Brandon Roy, but would he be the first option of a championship team of course not. They have him as their first option for now until they find a way to get a true first option. This is exactly what I expect Utah to do if Dwill leaves. I sincerely hope though that Utah will get a lottery pick not only this year but also in 2012 that way they can get their 1st and 2nd option and not struggle to find the first option year in and year out like Portland has.

sammybuckeye13ParticipantJazz definitely need a pure jump shooter. Think of what’s happened in the past 8 months: lost Korver, Matthews and Okur (all top-notch 3 point shooters), Raja is stinking and is 34 years old, and Hayward is only a slasher at this point because he’s too afraid to shoot. Jimmer, Marshon Brooks and Brandon Knight would be better fits IMO.

JoeWolf1It’s no secret to anybody who is on this site much that I agree with Rudeboy. Burks isn’t a good shooter and I don’t think his transition to the NBA will result in being a starter in his 1st or 2nd year. Athletically and size wise he reminds me a lot of Corey Brewer, but his game is much different. He plays an awful lot like Kenny Gregory, but he is much more effective because he’s taller and a much better free throw shooter. I think he could develop into a 12-15 pt scorer in the league, but not right off the bat which is why I think he belongs in the 14-24 range

BKKnicksfanParticipantI think alot of people love to pick and prod players, I feel Burks is underrated in a sense. He puts up 20-6 on a team with no legit point guard on the team to set him up. I feel he should be a lottery pick and he’s had some good games against solid comp.
My opinion? Golden State should draft him and trade Monta Ellis for a legit small forward. Monta Ellis for Josh Smith was a trade I heard on the B.S. Report and I thought that was a really good deal for both sides. That would allow Curry to finally prove he’s the star I know he is.
Curry-Burks-Smith-Lee-Biedrens with Udoh, Wright, Williams and Amudson off the bench would be a nice team I believe.

4th dimensionAre you drunk? Why would Warriors trade Monta for a SF, when Dorrell Wright has been one of the most improve players in the league? The Warriors need a Center, and if you were to trade Monta for a Center, it would have to be a borderline All-Star type Center, and teams usually don’t give up those kind of Center for a guard because it’s a more important position.

SwatLakeCityParticipant@sammybuckeye, I agree with you but Jimmer is a little to small. He will be playing a combo guard in the NBA and that is not Utah’s style. Besides I have Houston picking with the 12th pick. I expect the Jazz to get somewhere around 13-14 range. And who is Marshon Brooks he is not even projected to go in the lottery nor in first round (at least according to this site) So I highly doubt he would help Utah out. Right now the only options for Utah are Burks or Jordan Hamilton.
And as for those who think he is overrated, I guess today’s game will prove that.

Because it’s tough to get a ideal shooting guard back that has value similar to Monta Ellis. Josh Smith and Monta Ellis have close value so I think it’s a solid trade. Your not getting a All Star center for Monta Ellis mainly because teams don’t trade bigs for guards alot. Dorrell Wright is a good player, but better as a 6th man who can come in play D and the 2/3 spot.
Also, Josh Smith, David Lee and Biedrens would give you one of the better rebounding frontcourts in the league.

BKKnicksfanParticipantNot drinking at all. Golden State needs to move either Ellis or Curry to make the next step. I feel Josh Smith would be a nice fit in Golden St, allows them to put Wright on the bench as the 6th man.
People can disagree, that’s what I would do.

BKKnicksfanParticipantWhat do you mean never be his skillset? I guess a 47% shooter and 34% 3 point shooter can play the SF? He plays the four because he’s actually a good post up player and he can rebound well. Adding Josh Smith not only opens him up as a small forward, but he can play power forward as well at times. It’s not like he will be stuck as a small forward for every second he plays on the court. Come on now.

4th dimensionWhy do you keep suggesting the Warriors add another SF, when Dorrell Wright is perfect because he is a spot up shooter, you don’t need to run plays for him which is great because you have 2 good scorer’s already, he plays good D, and he’s 3 times cheaper than Josh Smith.

BKKnicksfanParticipantBecause Dorrell Wright has had one good season. He’s playing well, I admit that. Josh Smith is a better talent and someone I feel could help them take the next step which is getting them back into the playoffs.

4th dimensionUmm..duh! Ofcourse Smith is the better talent, but why invest so much and give up your best player to acquire a SF, which is not th team’s weakness by the way. That’s like the Lakers trading Kobe for a Center, because Bynum is always hurt. Monta or Curry should not be dealt, unless the Warriors are getting back a All-star/borderline Center in return, which is hard to pull off, like I said Centers are rare and high valued.

JoeWolf1That was about what I expected. I’ve seen Burks play a lot and it’s not a matter of him being nit picked, you just know what you’re getting. He has very obvious strengths and weaknesses. Brandon Roy, 1st or 2nd year starter, top 10 pick?….just isn’t the case

Im Your FatherParticipantKnicksboy,
I feel like you, among other people are really overrating Curry. I guess I’m in the minority here, but I just don’t understand how people are talking about Curry as the second-coming. He’s a good player for sure, but I would never consider him someone to build around. Frankly, I see his potential being about what Monta Ellis is right now.
Anyway, if I’m the Warriors, I’m not going to give up my best player, in hopes that Curry emerges as a franchise carrier.
(Also, forgive any grammatical/spelling mistakes, because unlike you I actually am pretty drunk right now)

flyboyParticipantBurks’ lack of perimiter shooting ability is going to hold him back. He’s also not really comparable to Brandon Roy. I don’t think, from what I’ve seen, he’s not a very good ballhandler, it’s too loose and he doesn’t change speeds enough while staying under control. Also, he runs into brick walls a fair bit. So he has issues he’ll need to address to be more than an athlete at the NBA level. With that said, he should become a good defender at the NBA level with experience.
