The Philadelphia 76ers have waived Pierre Jackson.

Mark Deeks writes that Jackson will receive a guaranteed $400,00 from the 76ers for this season while he rehabs from an Achilles tear that occured during Summer League.

What exactly are they doing/planning to do with him? I’m assuming he’s the same as any other free agent now and that Philadelphia does not have his rights.

Can’t explain how unlucky this guy must be. Was hands down the best player in the D-League after having 6 50 point games. Without a doubt would have gotten a call up, but didn’t since the Pelicans were the only team that was allowed to and they still didn’t want to despite his somewhat of trade value and even after Jrue Holiday got injured. Pierre then felt so disrespected that he then signed with a team in Europe and stayed there for the remainder of last year. Then after his rights finally get traded on draft night, he tears his achillies in the first game of summer league. First poor Pierre Jackson was going to have to wait a whole year to finally get his NBA career going and now he also has to find a new team again.

This is not aimed at you, but why in the hell did he buy a new porsche? He’s signing one year deals and it’s not like he’s signing the monster 1 year deals that Jordan used to sign. You would think you would want to tie up some long term security before you start throwing out money, especially on a high performance car that is likely to spend most of it’s time getting worked on.

carpe diem and, while this injury is a setback, Pierre Jackson he has to be fairly confident that he will get another contract, more than likely in the nba and more than likely next season.

I get where your coming from, the most logical thing to do is set yourself up for life but do you remember the first time you got a decent amount of money for whatever reason? And what did you do with it (it’s cool we all did it the first time).  Some athletes, Lebron the prime example, come in with the mentality "I want money and a lot of it" while others, Antoine Walker is a good example, get their money and over-enjoy it to much and even run out.  Most I would say however follow a maturity arc with their money, they blow a lot of it at first on dumb stuff and when they get older they realize the amount they wasted and that they won’t be earning this kind of money for very much longer and they start getting smart.

This move makes sense. Sixers can’t afford to keep him on the roster while he’s out for the year from a numbers point of view. Embiid is out for the year and needs a roster spot. Keeping PJax would have been 2/15 of the roster out for the year not including Jason Richardson who may or may not be ready to play and MCW who may miss the start of the season. That would mean the team could start the year with 11 active bodies including guys like Jerami Granf, who are best suited for the D-League right now. Any more injuries would make things more difficult. They knew no one was going to sign Jackson to sit out for the year

For a guy coming off a year at D-League salary, the guaranteed money for him during rehab is not inconsequential. Whether he ever makes it in the NBA or not, it still will help him get to his next paycheck somewhere in the world.

It is a nice humane move, but it does not make up for this. Frightening.
