Mr.Knick 32ParticipantLast time, the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers went to 7 games and a Dennis Rodman jumper was the difference. Now, we take to teams who set historic records and see who’s better. I’m talking about the 1986 Boston Celtics and the 1972 Los Angeles Lakers. The 72 Lakers are famous for the 33 game winning streak and winning the NBA title over the New York Knicks. The 86 Celtics went a record 40-1 at home which ended with NBA title over the Houston Rockets.
Prediction: I have Boston in 4. I think Boston’s frontcourt and depth will overpower a old Wilt Chamerlain.
Lakers’ Starting Lineup: Jerry West, Gail Goodrich, Jim McMillian, Happy Hairston, Wilt Chamberlain
Celtics’ Starting Lineup: Dennis Johnson, Danny Ainge, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parrish
Game 1: Lakers 128, Celtics 125
Wilt Chamberlain gave Boston fits. 28 points and 21 rebounds. Gail Goodrich also had a overall good game with 21 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Jerry West not only provided 27 points and 12 assists but he hit the game winning 3 point shot as LA takes a 1-0 series lead. Larry Bird did all he can with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. Kevin McHale led all Celtics with 27 points and 14 rebounds.
Game 2: Lakers 108, Celtics 119
Larry Bird went off in game 2. 32 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists and 7 steals. Kevin McHale added 17 points and 14 rebounds as Boston ties the series 1-1. The Big 3 of West, Chamberlain and Goodrich had solid performances but poor shooting nights. The 3 combined for 19/49 shooting in the loss. Jerry West led the Lakers with 21 points and 11 assists.
Game 3: Celtics 128, Lakers 117
Moving to the Boston Garden helps the Celtics get a 2-1 series lead. Larry Bird has another great game ( 34-10-5) but it’s Dennis Johnson who takes the game over. Johnson had 12 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. Wilt has a 2nd bad game with 11 points and 8 rebounds. The guard combo of Gail Goodrich and Jerry West combine for 51 points but it wasn’t enough.
Game 4: Celtics 105, Lakers 121
The Lakers pull back and tie the series 2-2 with a win. Wilt Chamberlain rebounds with 15 points, 16 rebounds and 6 blocks. West gives Los Angeles 23 points and Goodrich scores 21 to take the series back to LA. Larry Bird provides Boston 20 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists. Robert Parrish gives up 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kevin McHale must rebound from a 10 point, 6 rebound performance.
Game 5: Lakers 121, Celtics 97
The Lakers take a 3-2 series lead with a blowout back at the forum. All 5 Lakers starters scored in double figures with Jerry West leading the way with 27 points. Jim McMillian (20 points) and Gail Goodrich (25 points) also help the Lakers with a impressive win. Larry Bird had his worst game with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Kevin McHale leads all Celtics with 26 points and 6 rebounds.
Game 6: Celtics 119, Lakers 97
The Celtics force a Game 7 with a blowout victory. Larry Bird gave the best performance with 40 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish also had huge nights. McHale had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 blocks. Parrish had the usual 18 points and 13 rebounds
Game 7: Lakers 120, Celtics 118
The Lakers take game 7 by a hair. Happy Hairston gave LA: 18 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and the game winning tip in. All 5 Laker starters scored in double figures. Wilt Chamberlain had 20 points and 19 rebounds while Jerry West led all Lakers’ in scoring with 23 points and added 7 assists. Larry Bird had 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The Celtics had 6 players in double figures but it wasn’t enough.
