llperezcant comment on the 70’s really
but in the 80’s i would say bird was my favorite. He was my first favorite player becasue of his clutch shooting.
90’s, my personal favorite was nick van exel. BUt if i dont include lakers, it would be garry payton.
2000’s its kobe and that goes for today as well. Again if i dont include lakers, maybe kevin love.

For_Never_EverParticipantSorry, I really think people are way too high on Paul George. Don’t get me wrong he is a ok player. But he is getting way more hype and praise than he really should.

Memphis MadnessParticipantHuh, nobody said Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He wasn’t the most charismatic or flashiest player ever, but he was one of the most deadly players ever. Since I have to start with guys in the Seventies I think Kareem would have been at his peak during this decade. So, if I was paying to see guys play I would put a prime KAJ near the top of the list.
I was born in 1981 so I vaguely remember watching his last game against the Pistons in the Finals when the Lakers lost.
I would imagine that a peak Kareem would have been a combination of Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and Tim Duncan. Unheard of. So yeah, I would pay to see that guy. Heck, I would pay just to see his famous sky hooks alone.
The best match-up I would have liked to seen in the Seventies would be Kareem versus a surging Bill Walton during his brief prime in the mid-Seventies for the Trailblazers. Kareem vs. Walton would be THE center battle for me. Possibly the two most talented, fundamentally sound centers in basketball history. Both guys could score, rebound, defend, block shots, and pass. Kareem won 6 titles and Walton won 2. KAJ and the Lakers vs. Walton and the Blazers would be a hot ticket. Either up in Portland, or further south in Inglewood, CA at the Great Western Forum.
During the 70’s I would also liked to have seen Dr. J and David Thompson, either in the NBA or the ABA. They were at their peaks (both playing wise and in terms of vertical jumps) in the ABA so give me a game with Julius Erving, David Thompson, a red-white-and blue ball, and little to no defense. After watching 2 great centers going at it, and then two aerial assassins dueling it out in the ABA I would want to see Pete Maravich put on a show for the New Orleans Jazz. He could score, pass, and shoot from anywhere. Basketball has still been waiting for another Pistol Pete to show up…
From the 80’s I would like to have seen Magic Johnson play. And Larry Bird too. Those guys reinvented the game. Each guy could run an offense from anywhere on the floor and dissect a defense. I would have also liked to see a young MJ. MJ vs. Magic would have been good. MJ vs. Bird would be better. A mid-to late 80’s MJ was an unparalleled sight in NBA history. He could just destroy people. So I would like to have seen him play on those earlier Doug Collins teams when Charles Oakley was still around in red and black. To round out the Big Four of the 80’s I would go with Sir Charles. He was the total package. One of the few guys who can grab a rebound, dribble coast to coast and then throw down a dunk. Barkley gave us a preview of LeBron James. While not as well rounded as the other 4 guys give me Dominique Wilkins any day. Him and Spud Webb would have been great to see. I saw both those guys play in an exhibition in 1990. Nique was one of my favorite players. … bonus points for watching Manute Bol swat shots out of the sky. The Human Flyswatter was a unique player. Hard to believe nobody could really utilize a guy who could block shots, hit 3’s, and dunk. Manute’s a guy who that, if he played today he could single handily win you a fantasy weak with one or two games — and no one else would realize it. Yeah, he might have only had 8 points and 9 rebounds over two games but he might have also blocked 10 shots and hit 4 3 pointers.
My favorite guys in the Nineties were Shaq and Penny from the Nineties (I saw those two in an exhibition game against the Nets one year). Prime Hakeem would be be next on my list. Not as physically dominant as Shaq but probably the best finesse center ever. Rodman had some good years in the 80’s but he really rounded into form in the Nineties. The guy put Jordan’s comeback teams over the top and turned the Bulls into rock stars and international celebrities. Next two: Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton. Kemp could rock the joint and GP could throw some nice lob passes. In an era of young, great duos Kemp and Payton were one of the best. If I could add one more team I would go with the LJ, Zo, Bogues’ Hornets. Fun to watch with lots of young talent.
From the 2000’s the best guy I think was Kobe Bryant who had his prime during that decade. I would also put the C-Webb, J-Will Kings teams up there as some of my favorite nineties players and moments. I would have paid to see Vince Carter put on a show. A prime VC was the best dunker ever. The fifth guy I would have paid to see play would have been Latrell Sprewell. A great two way player and an athletic freak who could play 45 minutes a night.
