Memphis: gets a player they’ve longed for in Smith(they signed him to his current contract a couple years back, ATL decided to match the offer sheet). they probably won’t be able to afford Z-Bo after this year, so getting a younger PF with multiple yrs left on his deal at a not so steep price would definitely be appealing. Adding Shannon Brown as well would instantly give them the most athletic lineup in the league for years to come with Conley, Brown, Gay, Smith, & Gasol…and the capability of being very disruptive defensively with their speed and athleticism. They’ve been looking to deal Mayo, and I think Brown(as much as he loves LA) is tired of coming off the bench when there aren’t 30 better players than him at the position in the league. If Memphis would give him the full mid-level this summer, they’d still have $ to sign Gasol and keep their core together for a while.
Atlanta: They’ve wanted to move Horford to PF for some time now. They desperately need someone they can dump the ball down to in the post and consistently score with their back to the basket come playoff time…Bynum can be that guy. I’m not completely sure they want to part with Smith right now, but the coach has been calling him out for his shot selection recently, and his progression seems to have flat lined this year. Marvin was overpaid when they re-signed him, and he hasn’t been healthy for a full season in a while. Adding Artest would give this team a voice which it desperately needs…someone who isn’t gonna take getting his butt whipped by weaker opponents like the Hawks do all too often. He’d also appreciate the offense in ATL which involves everyone getting touches.
LA: I know a lot of people are gonna say "if they’re gonna move Bynum, they may as well go get Melo", I disagree. Melo is the kind of player who you don’t put in a set offense and tell him where to go and when to shoot. he’s a 1-on-1 scorer who gets his money off isolations and post ups…problem is, so does Kobe. I don’t think there’s enough touches in the triangle for both of them to play that way AND get Gasol the necessary touches in the paint. It took Wade & LeBron 3 months to figure out how to play together and they’re both unselfish…It would probable take Kobe & Melo an extra month because neither one is that unselfish with the ball. 4 months from Feb=June…meaning it would be too late, and they’d probably get beat by the TEAM that already knows exactly how to play together(San Antonio). The reason I like this trade for them is Randolph doesn’t really need plays ran for him to get his numbers, and even though you’d lose Bynum’s length…Randolph is still a better rebounder and can hit spot up shots from out to 18-ft when left open. Adding Mayo gives them another guy who can create his own shot off the bounce, and is probably a better spot up shooter than Brown if you give him the wide open looks the triangle gets. Mayo is also a much better ball handler and passer than Brown. Having Mayo, Kobe, Odom, & Pau in there to finish games makes it extremely difficult for opposing teams to double because all are threats to score if left open or if given single coverage. Lets face it…Ron doesn’t fit in the triangle. Never has, probably never will. It works better with an athletic guy who’s a solid spot up guy when left open at the 3 spot. Marvin gives them that youth & athleticism at the 3 and while he may not be the on-ball defender Ron is, his size and length could cause problems defensively(similar to Ariza). Besides that, Barnes or Odom would be the ones finishing games at the 3, and Marvin wouldn’t cause problems for not playing significant minutes the way Ron does. Shedding Walton’s contract sure doesn’t hurt either.

Lakers are giving up too many players in the deal.

TyroberParticipantI dont think Atlanta wants to take on Artests and Waltons salary along with a big man who just cant stay healthy when they are giving up Smith who has being constantly robbed of an Allstar appearance. If all players were always healthy it might make sense.
BUT I dont think you break up the Lakers under any circumstances. They are in a position to win a championship and the Spurs are the only team in their way of a 4th straight finals appreance. You have to keep that team together

suddsParticipantIt certainly has a lot of risk in it, but sometimes you need to shake it up and this trade could be a big boost for each team involved. There are a lot of haters on this site that need to be more positive when criticizing each other. Ya maybe secondary players get switched around a bit, but at the base of this is an alright proposal.
