In the second quarter, USA were up 33-23, Joe Johnson turned to someone and said "these guys don’t know how to play"

USA players disrespected the Greeks and Spanoulis was hitting 3’s and getting to the line.

At the end of the game, Coach K was like "#4 had some great passes".  He didn’t even know the players name.  THEO PAPALOUKAS, one of the best Euroleague players in the last 10 years.

This USA 2004 team was basically so self entitled, expected to stroll through and win the gold.  The Greek win was huge for team USA as since then, they have played pretty hard and have not taken other teams for granted.

WTF are you even talking about? Joe Johnson wasn’t on the team and Coach K didnt coach the ’04 team.

Point guard play was problematic, but that team’s issues went deeper than that.

It’s kind of a tough call because they could only take who wanted to participate. Guys like KG, Kobe, Shaq, Billups, Ray Allen, VC, TMac all declined for various reasons. IMO, it was difficult to fill a roster with guys who’s games translated when the top guys declined because that was such a crappy era of basketball. The early 2000s was just full of inefficient, iso-heavy bad basketball, un-imaginative team offense and bad individual defenders . Even the so-called "top" players weren’t as good as their numbers indicated because they were ball-dominant, volume chuckers who didn’t know how to defend (guys like Baron, Marbury, Francis, even TMac). So what Team USA sent was a bunch of kids (average age was like 23-24) and guys who’s style didn’t play well under FIBA rules surrounding them with non-shooters, coached by an inflexible guy, who refused to adapt to the entire roster. They were set up to fail from the jump.

My team would’ve probably looked something like:

        Billups/Bibby

        Kobe/ Ray Allen/Eddie Jones

        VC/ M.Finley/James Posey

        KG/ Elton Brand

        TD/ J.O’Neal

Heady point play, shooting, the best player in the world at that time IMO in KG, perimeter and interior defense with versatility, veteran players off the bench who can come in and play roles, translatable games to FIBA, no kids who didn’t know how to play. Larry Brown could’ve worked with that roster since they actually knew how to play, etc. If not him, then Pop or even Rick Carlisle would’ve sufficed. That team could’ve coached itself and it would’ve been a mop.

Larry Brown just wasn’t the right coach for that team. He was too stubborn with his lineups and unwilling to give the younger players mins. Lebron, Carmelo and stoudemire all barely got off the bench. Even though they were young and inexperienced at the time, I still think they should have had bigger roles and could of contributed, especially lebron.

Overall, it was a pretty poorly constructed team that lacked a true pg and was light on outside shooting. However, it would have been difficult to pick a better team given the fact that so many of the top players ( Kobe, shaq, kg, t-mac, Kidd, Allen, etc.) all refused to participate. They basically just threw a team together on the fly of the best players willing to play. In retrospect, they might have had better success if they just sent the entire 2004 pistons roster over to compete.
