Former San Diego State basketball commit Brodricks Jones will visit Syracuse

Syracuse, N.Y. — A little over a week ago, Brodricks Jones was one of San Diego State's top recruits in the 2015 class.

But the 6-foot-9 power forward from the Los Angeles area asked San Diego State for his release from his national letter of intent.

Jones now says via his Twitter account that he will visit four schools — and Syracuse is on that list.

The San Diego Union-Tribune first reported Jones' desire to be let out of his letter of intent.

Late Saturday night, Jones sent out a tweet indicating that he would visit Memphis, UTEP, Providence and Syracuse.

Jones also sent out a tweet regarding Syracuse.

Jones is considered a four-star prospect, but Syracuse's interest in a recruit from the 2015 class would be a surprise.

The NCAA's recent sanctions against Syracuse include a loss of three scholarships a year for a four-year period. That would mean Syracuse can have just 10 players on its roster. The NCAA penalty was set to begin with the 2015-16 season, but the NCAA's report did allow SU to put off that penalty for one year.

Syracuse currently has 11 scholarship players on its roster after getting a commitment recently from Paschal Chukwu, a 7-foot-2 center who will transfer to SU from Providence. Chukwu's addition meant that SU would delay the start of the scholarship penalty.

Syracuse could add Jones to its 2015 class, but his addition could create some numbers problems in the future. Syracuse loses Michael Gbinije and Trevor Cooney after next season, but Class of 2016 forward Matthew Moyer has already committed to Syracuse. And the SU coaches are ardently pursuing 2016 guard Tyus Battle of Edison, N.J.
