Eligibility question sidelines Wisconsin freshman Van Vliet

AP

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin freshman Andy Van Vliet was not going to dress for the Badgers' exhibition game on Wednesday against Wisconsin-River Falls because of a pending eligibility issue.

According to Wisconsin, NCAA rules state that prospective players have one year to enroll in college following their high school graduation or expected graduation date.

Van Vliet is a freshman from Belgium. The team said the eligibility question arose after Van Vliet played basketball as an amateur outside the one-year window.

The Badgers cited factors outside of Van Vliet's control in filing for a waiver with the NCAA. Wisconsin said it planned to appeal "as soon as possible" after finding out on Wednesday afternoon that the waiver was denied.

The 6-foot-11 Van Vliet is the tallest player on the Badgers' roster.
